De la defensa a la construcción de la paz
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, y especialmente ustedes, jóvenes, si queremos cooperar con nuestro Padre celestial en la construcción del futuro, hagámoslo junto con nuestros hermanos y hermanas migrantes y refugiados. ¡Construyámoslo hoy! Porque el futuro empieza hoy, y empieza por cada uno de nosotros. No podemos dejar a las próximas generaciones la responsabilidad de decisiones que es necesario tomar ahora, para que el proyecto de Dios sobre el mundo pueda realizarse y venga su Reino de justicia, de fraternidad y de paz.
Durante los últimos cuatro meses, he viajado a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, desde Matamoros hasta Tijuana, buscando comprensión mejor del movimiento de personas buscando asilo. Buena gente me pide preguntas que confunden a los líderes políticos y los defensores de la migración. “¿Qué podemos hacer?” “¿Qué deberíamos hacer?” “¿Cómo puedo ayudar?”
Pasemos de ver la migración como un problema a resolver, a reconocer a los migrantes y refugiados como nuestros hermanos y hermanas. La conclusión del mensaje del Papa Francisco para el Día del Migrante y del Refugiado nos llama a construir el futuro hoy, “¡Porque el futuro empieza hoy, y empieza por cada uno de nosotros!”
El Papa Francisco terminó su mensaje con una oración, inspirada en la oración de San Francisco de Asís:
Señor, haznos portadores de esperanza,
para que donde haya oscuridad reine tu luz,
y donde haya resignación renazca la confianza en el futuro.
Señor, haznos instrumentos de tu justicia,
para que donde haya exclusión, florezca la fraternidad,
y donde haya codicia, florezca la comunión.
Señor, haznos constructores de tu Reino
junto con los migrantes y los refugiados
y con todos los habitantes de las periferias.
Señor, haz que aprendamos cuán bello es
vivir como hermanos y hermanas. Amén.

From Advocacy to Peace Making
Dear brothers and sisters, and, in a special way, young people! If we want to cooperate with our heavenly Father in building the future, let us do so together with our brothers and sisters who are migrants and refugees. Let us build the future today! For the future begins today and it begins with each of us. We cannot leave to future generations the burden of responsibility for decisions that need to be made now, so that God’s plan for the world may be realized and his Kingdom of justice, fraternity, and peace may come.
Over the past four months, I have traveled along the United States / Mexico border, from Matamoros to Tijuana, seeking to better understand the movement of people seeking asylum. Good people ask questions that are confounding political leaders and migration advocates. “What can we do?” “What should we be doing?” “How can I help?”
Let us move from seeing migration as a problem to be solved, to recognizing migrants and refugees as our brothers and sisters. The conclusion of Pope Francis’ message for the Day of Migrants and Refugees calls us to build the future today! For the future begins today and it begins with each of us.
Pope Francis ended his message with a prayer, inspired by the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make us bearers of hope,
so that where there is darkness,
your light may shine,
and where there is discouragement,
confidence in the future may be reborn.
Lord, make us instruments of your justice,
so that where there is exclusion, fraternity may flourish,
and where there is greed, a spirit of sharing may grow.
Lord, make us builders of your Kingdom,
together with migrants and refugees
and with all who dwell on the peripheries.
Lord, let us learn how beautiful it is
to live together as brothers and sisters. Amen.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
