“Construir el futuro con los migrantes y los refugiados”
He sido verdaderamente bendecida al caminar con migrantes e inmigrantes durante más de treinta años. Por supuesto, he estado expuesto a muchas dificultades, abusos y decepciones en este ministerio. Pero, la resiliencia, el gozo y la fe de los migrantes me animan en los tiempos difíciles y enriquecen mi vida y ministerio. Ayer escribí: “El migrante no es un problema para resolver, sino una persona a ser comprendida y amada”. Prefiero hablar de las buenas noticias de trabajar con inmigrantes que hablar de los problemas políticos, sociales y económicos de una sociedad temerosa de los inmigrantes. El Papa Francisco proclamó hoy un mensaje muy parecido al que escribí ayer.
“Construir el futuro con los migrantes y los refugiados significa reconocer y valorar lo que cada uno de ellos puede aportar al proceso de edificación.” (Mensaje del Papa Francisco para la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado, 2022)
El sábado, estaba hablando con un contratista de pintura. Habló de cuánto valoraba a sus trabajadores inmigrantes por su ética de trabajo. Dijo que sus trabajadores inmigrantes trabajan duro, constantes, están dispuestos a aprender el oficio y producen mejores resultados que muchos de sus trabajadores no inmigrantes. Sus trabajadores inmigrantes expresan su agradecimiento por la oportunidad que les ha brindado. Su tristeza es cuando descubre problemas de documentación con un buen empleado que no puede seguir empleando. Él pregunta, “¿por qué no existe un proceso en el que un empleador pueda patrocinar a un trabajador calificado?”
Mi amigo contratista de pintura no entiende las complicaciones de la política y la aplicación de la ley de inmigración, pero reconoce la verdad del reconocimiento del Papa Francisco de las contribuciones que hacen los migrantes en el trabajo de construcción y otros trabajos manuales. El contratista llama la atención sobre las habilidades necesarias en la construcción y tantos campos del trabajo manual.
Reconocer y valorar las contribuciones de las personas migrantes y refugiadas a nuestras vidas es esencial para desafiar el estancamiento de la política y la desinformación que bloquea una respuesta constructiva a las fuerzas globales de la migración. Busquemos comprensión y amor por los migrantes y refugiados.

“Building the future with migrants and refugees”
I have been truly blessed by walking with migrants and immigrants for over thirty years. Of course, I have been exposed to many hardships, abuses and disappointments in this ministry. But, the resiliency, the joy and the faith of the migrants buoys me in the difficult times and enriches my life and ministry. Yesterday, I wrote, “The migrant is not a problem to be solved, but a person to be understood and loved.” I would rather talk about the good news of working with migrants than talking about the political, social and economic woes of a society fearful of migrants. Pope Francis proclaimed a message today much like what I wrote yesterday.
“Building the future with migrants and refugees means recognizing and valuing how much each of them can contribute to the process of construction.” (Message of Pope Francis for World day of Migrants and Refugees, 2022)
On Saturday, I was talking with a painting contractor. He spoke of how much he valued his immigrant workers because of their work ethic. He said that his immigrant workers are hardworking, prompt, willing to learn the trade and producing better results than many of his non-immigrant workers. His immigrant workers express gratitude for the opportunity that he has given them. His sadness is when he discovers documentation issues with a good employee that he cannot continue to employ. He asks, “why is there no process that an employer could sponsor a qualified worker?”
My painting contractor friend does not understand the complications of the politics and enforcement of immigration law, but he recognizes the truth of Pope Francis’ recognition of the contributions that migrants make in the work of construction and other manual labors. The contractor calls attention to the skills needed in construction and so many fields of manual labor.
Recognizing and valuing the contributions of migrants and refugees to our lives is essential to challenging the stagnation of politics and the misinformation that blocks constructive response to the global forces of migration. Let us seek understanding and love for migrants and refugees.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
