Considerar cada individuo
En los últimos días, he considerado la migración en las Escrituras. Gente ha migrado desde el principio de los tiempos. La migración podría implicar simplemente alejarse de la comunidad de origen de uno, cientos, incluso miles de kilómetros, mientras las personas buscaban mejores lugares para vivir y criar una familia. Ciertamente, la migración nunca ha sido fácil, pero las personas de fe siempre experimentan la mano de Dios en su viaje. Caminando con migrantes, he visto la mano de Dios en mi jornada también. Doy cuenta de la bendición que he sido de tener tanta gente buena que me enseñe lo que uno no puede obtener de los libros, los estudios estadísticos, los medios de comunicación y los observadores políticos.
El viaje de cada migrante es diferente. Los pies pueden recorrer los mismos caminos, pero el viaje es único. Las personas que intentan hablar por muchos o todos los migrantes nunca revelarán la fe, la esperanza, las penas, el dolor, la soledad, la alegría, los éxitos y las pruebas de los migrantes. ¿Están todos los migrantes llenos de fe y esperanza? No. ¿Todos los migrantes cuidan y protegen a sus compañeros migrantes? No. ¿Son todos honestos y dignos de confianza? No. ¿Son todos criminales? No. ¿Son todos santos? No. Los migrantes provienen de todos los ámbitos de la vida, de todas las clases y de todos los credos. Cada uno es un hijo de Dios, y debemos aprender a acogerlos como deseamos acoger a Cristo. “Cuando yo era un extraño, me recibieron”.
Es difícil entrar a una conversación sobre migración sin responder a preguntas sobre la seguridad y la naturaleza política de la inmigración, no solo en nuestra nación, sino en el mundo entero. Para comprender verdaderamente la migración, tenemos que alejarnos de las reacciones políticas hacia los migrantes y reconocer la movilidad de personas de todas las clases, culturas y naciones. Necesitamos considerar la migración interna de personas que se mueven de una parte de una nación a otra, no siempre basada en el miedo, la violencia y la tragedia.
Migrantes buscando cruzar fronteras internacionales son solo una pequeña parte del movimiento de personas del mundo. Responder solo a la crisis de los migrantes siempre nos dejará ignorando a muchos que se mueven internamente dentro de las naciones en lugar de buscar la vida en otro país.

Consider each person
The past few days, I have considered migration in the Scriptures. People have migrated from the beginning of time. Migration could involve simply moving away from one’s home community, hundreds, even thousands of miles as people looked for better places to live and raise a family. Migration certainly has never been easy, but people of faith always see the hand of God in their journey. Walking with migrants for the past thirty years, I have seen God’s hand in my journey with migrants. As I reflect on this journey, I realize how blessed I have been to have so many good people teach me what one cannot gain from books, statistical studies, media and political observers.
Every migrant’s journey is different. The feet may tread the same paths as many others, but the journey is unique. People trying to speak for many or all migrants will never reveal the faith, the hope, the sorrows, the pain, the loneliness, the joy, the successes and the trials of migrants. Are all migrants filled with faith and hope? No. Are all migrants caring for and protecting fellow migrants? No. Are they all honest and trustworthy? No. Are they all criminals? No. Are they all saints? No. The migrants come from all walks of life, every class and every faith. Each is a child of God, and we need to learn how to welcome them as we wish to welcome Christ. “When I was a stranger, you welcomed me.”
It is very difficult to enter a conversation about migration today without responding to questions about security and the political nature of immigration, not only in our nation, but in the entire world. To truly understand migration, we must step away from the political reactions to migrants and recognize the mobility of people of all classes, cultures, and nations. We need to consider the internal migration of people moving from one part of a nation to another, not always based on fear, violence and tragedy.
Migrants seeking to cross international borders is only a small part of the movement of people around the world. To respond only to the crisis migrants, will always leave us ignoring many moving internally within nations rather than seeking life in another country.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
