Semana Santa en México
Celebré la Semana Santa en México tres veces. El más memorable fue en Oaxaca en 1995. Era parte de un grupo misionero de cuatro sacerdotes y veintiocho misioneros laicos y religiosas. Tres sacerdotes eran responsables de dos ranchos y un sacerdote tenía una parroquia. Cada uno de los siete ranchos tenía cuatro misioneros que dirigían los servicios en los ranchos.
Los dos pueblos a los que serví estaban a cada lado de un profundo barranco. Era una caminata de tres millas entre los pueblos, y el camino no era fácil de seguir. Tenía un guía que caminaba conmigo todos los días. De lunes a miércoles comencé a escuchar confesiones a las 6:00 am mientras las mujeres rezaban el rosario en la iglesia y los hombres rezaban las estaciones en un sendero en la ladera. Escuché confesiones durante dos horas antes de que alguien me llamara para desayunar. Después del desayuno escuché confesiones por otra hora más o menos. Luego visité las clases de catecismo. Después de las 11:30, fuimos al otro pueblo. Allí almorcé, y a las 2:00 pm hubo confesiones. A las 4:00 pm celebramos la Misa. Después de la Misa, caminamos de regreso al primer pueblo para escuchar más confesiones y celebrar la Misa a las 7:00 o 7:30 pm. Comimos alrededor de las 9:00 pm y oramos Completas después de comer.
Los días fueron muy ocupados, pero gratificantes. Las confesiones fueron un poco más ligeras el Jueves Santo, pero ofrecimos la Misa del Jueves Santo en ambos pueblos. El viernes hubo celebraciones del vía crucis viviente y la liturgia del Viernes Santo en cada pueblo. En realidad, fue más relajante ya que no tenía ningún papel en las estaciones.
Sábado Santo, fue increíble ver a tanta gente preparándose para la fiesta que comenzaría apenas terminara la Misa de Vigilia. Las mujeres prepararon los frijoles, el arroz, el pozole, las salsas y toda la rica comida para la fiesta. Varios hombres mataron y prepararon cabras, cerdos, y pollos. Los niños recorrieron las laderas recogiendo flores para decorar la Iglesia. Coros y servidores tuvieron sus ensayos. Era un día en que el padre podía relajarse.
Las dos misas de vigilia fueron hermosas. Después del segundo servicio que comenzó a las 10:00 pm, cuando salí de la iglesia al final de la Misa, los fuegos artificiales iluminaron el cielo. ¡Que viva Cristo Rey!

Holy Week in Mexico
Three times I celebrated Semana Santa in Mexico. The most memorable was in Oaxaca in 1995. I was part of a mission group of four priests and twenty-eight lay and religious missionaries. Three priests were responsible for two ranches each and one priest had one parish. Each of the seven ranches had four missionaries who ran our services in the ranches.
The two towns that I served were on each side of a deep ravine. It was a three mile walk between the towns, and the path was not easy to follow, so I had a guide who walked with me each day. From Monday to Wednesday, I began hearing confessions at 6:00 am while the women prayed the rosary in the church, and the men prayed the stations on a path on the hillside. I heard confessions for two hours before someone called me for breakfast. After breakfast I heard confessions for another hour or so. Then I visited the children´s catechism classes. After 11:30, we walked to the other town. There I had lunch, and at 2:00 pm, there were confessions. At 4:00 pm we celebrated Mass. After Mass, we walked back to the first village to hear more confessions and celebrate Mass at 7:00 or 7:30 pm. We had our supper at around 9:00 pm and night prayer with the missionaries.
The three days were very busy, but very rewarding. Confessions were a bit lighter on Holy Thursday, but we offered the Holy Thursday Mass in both towns. Friday, there were celebrations of the living stations of the cross and the Good Friday liturgy in each village. It was actually more relaxing since I had no role in the stations.
Holy Saturday, it was amazing watching many people preparing for the fiesta that would begin as soon as the Vigil Mass ended. Women prepared the beans, rice, posole, salsas and all the great food for the fiesta. Several men slaughtered the pigs, chickens and goats. The children scoured the hillsides picking flowers to decorate the Church. Choirs and servers had their practices. It was a day when the Padre could relax.
The two vigil Mass were beautiful. After the second vigil service that began at 10:00 pm when I emerged from the church at the end of Mass, fireworks boomed, and illuminated the sky. ¡Que viva Cristo!

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
