Resilience: a missionary virtue

Last week, we celebrated the feast of St. Clement Hofbauer. In his homily for the feast of St. Clement, Fr. Alberto Esseverri, Vicar General of the Redemptorist Congregation said:

“I would like to name here some moments and circumstances in which St. Clement was a resilient person. Already from the beginning of his life he wanted to be a priest. He felt strongly the call of Jesus Christ, he wanted to follow him and offer his life. It was not easy. There were so many dreams, efforts, jobs, people, trips, etc., that he had to live through, until here in Rome, he heard the bell of the Redemptorists and began his process of following Jesus Christ in our Congregation. It was not so easy when he was asked to cross the Alps again to found the Congregation there.”

In all the difficulties that Clement faced in establishing the Congregation outside of Italy, his resilience was his virtue. There were struggles at all levels, political, social, religious and even within the congregation, but while Clement did not realize a permanent foundation for the Redemptorists in Europe, the mission of the Redemptorist began to take shape, to develop and to expand. Soon, the Congregation sent missionaries to North America.

A key missionary virtue is resilience. It is needed today as Redemptorist initiate new ministries today. May God bless Redemptorists and their partners in mission with resilience to rise above the struggles of ministry.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
