Somos porteadores, no guardias.
Siempre es un privilegio como sacerdote participar en llevar a niños y jóvenes a los sacramentos de iniciación. Cuando los padres piden que su hijo sea bautizado en la fe, los sacerdotes y ministros de la Iglesia necesitan ver sus roles para traer a los niños al Cuerpo de Cristo, como el portero, un portero que les da la bienvenida. Damos la bienvenida a las personas al don de la relación con Cristo en el sacramento. Acoger al niño, da apoyo a los padres mientras introduce a su hijo en el amor de Cristo y su Iglesia.
Después de bautizar a un bebé, un ferviente abuelo católico me agradeció por mi amabilidad con su hijo y su nuera cuando se inscribieron para el bautismo de su hijo. Él dijo: “Padre, algunos sacerdotes actúan como guardias en la puerta de la iglesia más que como apóstoles. En el bautismo del primer hijo de mi hijo, el sacerdote pidió que ellos y los padrinos prueban que eran católicos. Con usted, simplemente se sintieron bienvenido”. Hizo una broma, pero duele. Dijo: “En algunas parroquias, es más difícil para bautizar a un niño que entrevistar con la Migra (ICE)”.
Tomo en serio la importancia de los padrinos para el bautismo, pero es suficiente preguntar a los padrinos si están bautizados y viven activamente su fe católica. No es respetuoso de su parte pedir copias de su certificado de bautismo, su acta de confirmación y su certificado de matrimonio. El papel de los padrinos es tener una relación con el niño que sea testigo de la fe católica. Está bien preguntarles y aceptar su palabra.
El domingo pasado, Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos que fueran misericordiosos como Dios es misericordioso. “No juzguen, para que no serán juzgados”. Nos mostró la misericordia de Dios tantas veces. Aun cuando fue crucificado, miró con amor a sus verdugos, diciendo: “Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen”. Cuando somos testigos de la compasión y la misericordia de Dios hacia aquellos a quienes servimos, verdaderamente servimos a nuestro Señor. Nadie debería comparar solicitar el bautismo con el interrogatorio de inmigrantes por parte de ICE.

It is always a privilege as a priest to participate in bringing children and youth into the sacraments of initiation. When parents ask that their child be baptized in the faith, priests and ministers of the Church need to see their roles in bringing children into the Body of Christ, as the porter, a doorman welcoming them. We welcome people to the gift of relationship with Christ in the sacrament. Welcoming the child, gives support to the parents as they introduce their child to the love of Christ and his Church.
After baptizing an infant, a fervent Catholic grandparent thanked me for my kindness to his son and daughter-in-law as they registered for their child’s baptism. He said, “Father, some priests act like guards at the door of the church rather than as apostles. At the baptism of my son’s first child, the priest made them, and the godparents prove that they were Catholic. With you, they simply felt welcomed.” He made a joke, but it hurts. He said, “In some parishes, it is more difficult for a to be child baptized than it is to deal with la Migra (ICE).”
I take the importance of godparents for Baptism seriously, but it is sufficient to ask the godparents if they are baptized, and they actively live their Catholic faith. It is not respectful of them to ask for copies of their baptismal certificate, their confirmation record and their marriage certificate. The role of the godparents is to have a relationship with the child that witnesses the Catholic faith. It is okay to ask them and to accept their word.
This past Sunday, Jesus told the disciples to be merciful as God is merciful. “Do not judge, lest you be judged.” He showed us the mercy of God so many times. Even as he was crucified, he looked with love on his executioners, saying, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” When we witness the compassion and mercy of God to those we serve, we truly serve our Lord. No one should ever be able to compare petitioning Baptism to the interrogation of immigrants by ICE.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
