Comprender las diferencias culturales en la fe
Mientras buscamos la comprensión de la migración y el migrante, durante los últimos dos días, las publicaciones del Padre Migrante han citado secciones del libro La Fe del Migrante. El capítulo cuatro se titula “¿Quién es el migrante?” Tengo la intención de usar mañana las páginas 34-36, “El catolicismo en América Latina”. Antes de publicar esa reflexión, deseo explicar un poco la importancia de comprender las diferencias culturales en la fe católica. Compartimos la misma religión, pero la forma en que vivimos y expresamos nuestra fe en las Américas está muy influenciada por cómo llegó el catolicismo a nuestros diferentes países. No busco enfatizar demasiado las diferencias de nuestro enfoque de lo divino, porque las creencias fundamentales son compartidas, pero la forma en que expresamos nuestra fe tiene algunas diferencias matizadas.
En lugar de distinguir por nacionalidad, simplemente identificaré una distinción entre el Norte y el Sur. En el norte, el catolicismo llegó con inmigrantes principalmente de Europa. La espiritualidad del norte estuvo muy influenciada por la experiencia europea de la Reforma y el Concilio de Trento. La religión a menudo se vio envuelta en preocupaciones intelectuales y legales. Hubo un fuerte énfasis en la teología, el derecho y la ética moral. Nuestro catecismo enfatizaba la teología. En el Sur, el catolicismo llegó con misioneros de Europa y se extendió a los indígenas a través de la conversión. El mensaje de los misioneros españoles y portugueses fue devocional. El mensaje hablaba al corazón, y las herramientas de conversión fueron la oración, los sacramentos y las celebraciones de momentos importantes en la vida de familias y en los santuarios.
Hay gracia tanto en la espiritualidad del Norte como en la espiritualidad del Sur. Necesitamos doctrina, ley y búsqueda intelectual para explicar la fe. También necesitamos devoción, emoción y celebración mientras buscamos una relación con Dios en nuestras vidas. Apreciación de la influencia de la cultura en parroquias que incluyen personas de diferentes culturas.
Celebrando el Dia de Accion de Gracias
Esta historia puede ser familiar de blogs anteriores, pero refleja un intento exitoso de una parroquia para unir a nuestras comunidades de habla inglesa y española.
Una mujer del consejo parroquial expresó su preocupación porque teníamos muy poco en común entre las dos comunidades lingüísticas. La comunidad hispana a menudo invitaba a sus amigos del norte a sus celebraciones de las fiestas de la Virgen y las Posadas, pero ella dijo: “No tenemos celebraciones religiosas similares para invitar a los hispanos a unirse con nosotros. ¿Qué pasaría si celebremos juntos el Día de Acción de Gracias? Todo el mundo entiende el deseo de dar gracias a Dios”. Los lectores prepararon las lecturas. Produjimos un programa para la Misa con las lecturas traducidas para que todos pudieran seguir las lecturas. La promoción de la Misa de Acción de Gracias se hizo a través de boletines, volantes y anuncios en todos los comercios del pueblo. Los coros de inglés y español se prepararon para el día.
Alrededor de 150 procedían de la comunidad inglesa y 150 de la comunidad hispana. Después de la misa tomamos café, chocolate caliente y pan dulce. Al año siguiente repetimos la celebración de Acción de Gracias. Vinieron unos 150 de habla inglesa y 500 de habla hispana. La mujer del consejo parroquial dijo: “Ellos están apoderando de nuestra fiesta también”. Nuestra Misa de Acción de Gracias fue una buena experiencia de unir a nuestras comunidades culturales y ayudó a la parroquia a construir puentes entre las comunidades.

Understanding cultural differences in faith
As we seek understanding of migration and the migrant, for the past two days, the Padre Migrante posts have quoted sections of the book Migrant Faith. Chapter four is titled, “Who is the migrant?” I intend tomorrow to use pages 34-36, “Catholicism in Latin America.” Before posting that reflection, I wish to explain a bit of the importance of understanding cultural differences in the Catholic faith. We share the same religion, but how we live and express our faith in the Americas is greatly influenced by how Catholicism arrived in our different countries. I seek not to over-emphasize the differences of our approach to the divine, because the core beliefs are shared, but how we express our faith has some nuanced differences.
Rather than distinguishing by nationality, I simply will identify a distinction between North and South. In the North, Catholicism arrived with immigrants primarily from Europe. Northern spirituality was greatly influenced by the European experience of the Reformation and the Council of Trent. Religion was often caught up in intellectual and legal concerns. There was a strong emphasis on theology, law and moral ethics. Our catechism emphasized theology. In the South, Catholicism arrived with missionaries from Europe and spread to indigenous people through conversion. The message of Spanish and Portuguese missionaries was devotional. The message spoke to the heart, and the tools of conversion were prayer, sacrament and celebrations of important moments in the lives of families and shrines.
There is grace in both a North of the Border spirituality and South of the Border spirituality. We need doctrine, law and intellectual pursuit in explaining our faith. We also need devotion, emotion and celebration as we seek a relationship with God in our lives. Appreciation of the influence of culture in parishes that include people of different cultures.
Celebrating Thanksgiving
This story may be familiar from previous blogs, but it reflects a successful attempt of a parish to bring our English and Spanish speaking communities together.
A parish council member expressed concern that we had very little that we did in common between the two different language communities. The Hispanic community often invited their English-speaking friends to their celebrations of feasts of Mary and the Posadas, but she said, “We don’t have similar religious celebrations to invite our Hispanic friends to join with us. What if we had a bilingual celebration of Thanksgiving? Everyone understands the desire to give thanks to God.” Readers prepared the readings. We produced a program booklet for the Mass with the readings translated so that all could follow the readings. The promotion of the Thanksgiving Mass was done through bulletins, flyers and announcement in all the shops in town. Our English and Spanish choirs prepared for the day.
About 150 came from the English-speaking community and 150 from our Hispanic community. After the Mass we had coffee, hot chocolate, and sweet rolls. The following year we repeated our Thanksgiving celebration. About 150 English-speaking came and 500 Spanish-speaking. The parish council member said, “They are even taking over our feast.” Our Thanksgiving Mass was a good experience of bringing our cultural communities together and helped the parish build bridges between our communities.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
