Caminando con inmigrantes hoy
Durante los últimos treinta años, he caminado con migrantes y refugiados de muchas partes del mundo. Las causas de la migración de personas varían de generación en generación, de nación en nación y de crisis en crisis. Los migrantes con los que he caminado tienen una multitud de razones para dejar su país de origen para buscar una nueva vida en otro lugar. A veces eligen su destino. En ocasiones, su destino se elige en campos de refugiados de todo el mundo.
Ministerio del Momento
El desafío y la gracia de la pastoral migrante es que la necesidad de la persona es urgente. Se necesita una respuesta en el momento. Necesitamos escuchar a la persona para recibir orientación sobre cuál es la necesidad urgente en sus vidas. Para el misionero, puede que no sea la necesidad obvia que el migrante quiere que el ministro aborde. Como sacerdote, he venido a escenarios de desesperación por accidentes o desastres naturales y la gente viene a mí sin buscar las necesidades de vivienda, alimentación y atención médica. Vienen por su necesidad espiritual y emocional.
El ministro de la iglesia puede necesitar ayuda a identificar los recursos necesarios para personas en crisis, pero a menudo el ministerio es simplemente la presencia de una persona de fe durante un momento de dolor. Un campesino de 27 años murió repentinamente de un infarto. Todo el campamiento estaba a tope cuando llegamos. Varios eran parientes del hombre. Estaban haciendo llamadas a familiares en México. Algunos querían culpar a alguien, a cualquiera. Llegó el equipo médico, pero no pudieron hacer nada. En medio de la agitación de los demás en el campamento, sor María llamó a todos a orar. Ella dijo: “Padre, guíanos en la oración”.
Lo ungí condicionalmente, pero lo que el campamento necesitaba era calma. La presencia de nuestro equipo de la misión migrante se mezcló con los trabajadores y pronto la ira se calmó y algunos de los miembros maduros del campamento pudieron dar tareas a las personas sobre cómo podían ayudar a los miembros de la familia presentes y se sentaron con ellos mientras llamaban a la familia del trabajador en México.
Puede que no siempre estemos seguros de qué hacer, el ministerio migrante responde al momento con humildad, haciendo lo mejor que podemos y dejando que Dios se encargue del resto.

Walking with immigrants today
Over the past thirty years, I have walked with migrants and refugees from many parts of the world. The causes of the migration of people varies from generation to generation, from nation to nation, and from crisis to crisis. The migrants with whom I have walked have a multitude of reasons for their leaving their nation of origin to seek a new life elsewhere. At times they choose their destination. At times their destination is chosen in refugee camps around the world.
Ministry of the Moment
The challenge and the grace of migrant ministry is that the need of the person is urgent. A response is needed in the moment. We need to listen to the person for guidance as to what is the urgent need in their lives. For the missionary, it may not be the obvious need that the migrant wants the minister to address. As a priest, I have come to scenes of desperation at accidents or natural disasters and people come to me not looking for the needs of shelter, food and health care. They come for their spiritual and emotional need.
The church minister may need to help identify resources needed for people in crisis, but often the ministry is simply the presence of a person of faith during a moment of pain. A 27-year-old farm worker died suddenly of a heart attack. The entire camp was buzzing when we arrived. Several were relatives of the man. They were making calls to relatives in Mexico. Some wanted to blame someone, anyone. The medical team arrived, but there was nothing they could do. In the midst of the agitation of the others in the camp, Sr. María called for everyone to pray. She said, “Father, lead us in prayer.”
I conditionally anointed him, but what the camp needed was calm. The presence of our migrant mission team mingled with the workers and soon anger subsided and some of the mature members of the camp were able to give people assignments as to how they could help the family members present and sat with them as they called the worker’s family in Mexico.
We may not always be certain of what to do, migrant ministry responds to the moment with humility, doing the best we can and letting God handle the rest.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
