Gracias a Dios por los buenos padres
Hace unos días recordé a un santo de nuestro tiempo, el Beato Stanley Rother. Me estoy preparando para ofrecer un día de retiro para los candidatos a la Confirmación en Madill, Oklahoma. La Arquidiócesis de Oklahoma City tiene la bendición de tener un santo mártir reconocido por la Iglesia. Como parte de nuestro día de recuerdo de la Confirmación, consideraremos su discernimiento de su vocación y cómo creció en una pequeña comunidad agrícola en Oklahoma que moldeó su vida y su misión a la comunidad indígena en Guatemala a la que sirvió.
A medida que aprendí sobre su vida, el papel de sus padres y su familia en la historia de su vocación me recordó la bendición que es tener buenos padres. Los valores y la fe vistos en la vida del Beato Stanley se desarrollaron en la comunidad agrícola alemana en Okarche, Oklahoma. Sus padres desarrollaron sus valores y fe bajo la influencia de sus padres e inculcaron la fe a sus hijos. Experimentaron la Gran Depresión y se casaron durante la sequía, conocida como el Dust Bowl. No fue un momento fácil para ser agricultores en Oklahoma, pero su ética y fe formaron al Beato Stanley.
Al crecer en una familia de fe, con padres forjados en los tiempos de la Depresión, el Dust Bowl y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, es bueno recordar la bendición que fueron para mi generación. Cuando sus padres enviaron a su hijo a un seminario y a su hija a un convento en el mismo año, lo hicieron con una mezcla de orgullo y tristeza. Mientras leía sobre ellos, pensé en mis propios padres.
Fui a un seminario de escuela secundaria y salí de casa a las 14. Cuando abordé el tren para ir al seminario a 500 millas de casa, nunca olvidaré la despedida de mi papá. Mientras mi mamá, mis hermanas y mis hermanos esperaban que llegara el tren, mi papá me llevó a un lado y me dijo: “Mike, si te realizas el sacerdocio, seré un padre muy orgulloso de su hijo, pero sé que mientras vas al seminario esta noche, si después de unos años decides que esto no es para ti, y vuelves a casa, seré un padre, muy orgulloso de su hijo”. Fue con su bendición y apoyo constante que me convertí en misionero redentorista.
Oro por todas las parejas jóvenes que comienzan su vida matrimonial. Que seas bendecido por tus hijos y que seas una bendición para ellos.

Thanking God for good parents
A few days ago, I called to mind a saint for our times, Blessed Stanley Rother. I am preparing to offer a day of recollection for Confirmation candidates in Madill, Oklahoma. The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City is blessed to have a martyr saint recognized by the Church. As part of our Confirmation day of recollection, we will consider his discernment of his vocation and how much growing up in a small farming community in Oklahoma shaped his life and his mission to the indigenous community in Guatemala that he served.
As I learned about his life, the role of his parents and family in his vocation story called to mind the blessing it is to have good parents. The values and faith seen in Blessed Stanley’s life developed in the German farming community in Okarche, Oklahoma. His parents developed their values and faith under the influence of their parents and instilled their children with the faith. They experienced the Great Depression and married during the drought, known as the Dust Bowl. It was not an easy time to be farmers in Oklahoma, but their ethic and faith formed Blessed Stanley.
Growing up in a family of faith, with parents forged in the times of the Depression, the Dust Bowl and World War II, it is good to remember the blessing they were to my generation. As his parents sent their son to a seminary and their daughter to a convent in the same year, they did so with a mixture of pride and sadness. As I read about them, I thought of my own parents.
I went to a high school seminary, leaving home at 14. As I boarded the train to go to the seminary 500 miles from home, I will never forget my Dad’s farewell to me. While my Mom and sisters and brothers watched for the train to arrive, my Dad took me to the side and said, “Mike, if you go on to become a priest, I will be a father very proud of his son, but, know that as you go to the seminary tonight, if after a few years you decide that this is not for you, and you come home, I will be a father, very proud of his son.” It was with his blessing and constant support that I became a Redemptorist missionary.
I pray for all young couples beginning their married lives. May you be blessed by your children and may you be a blessing to them.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
