Permite que los pobres nos evangelicen
Puedo decir que los gozos más bellos y espontáneos que he visto en mis años de vida son los de personas muy pobres que tienen poco a qué aferrarse. (EG.7)
Cada año durante las celebraciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, las más hermosas expresiones de alegría se ven en los pobres y en los niños. Las celebraciones de una novena se llevaron a cabo a las 5:30 am durante nueve días en un pueblo pequeño de Oklahoma. Cada mañana, antes de ir a trabajar, muchos participaron en el rezo del rosario y luego celebraron la Misa. La comunidad es pobre en términos monetarios, pero rica en tradición. Esta comunidad trabajadora expresa alegría al celebrar su fe.
Este año, la Fiesta cayó en domingo. Los obispos les dijeron a las parroquias que celebraran la fiesta de la virgen en una fecha alternativa, ya que la liturgia dominical necesitaba celebrar el tercer domingo de Adviento. La parroquia fue obediente y celebró Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe el sábado. Fue una fiesta alegre. En la mañana del día 12 la comunidad celebró las Mañanitas a las 5:00 am. Este fue el verdadero día de la Virgen. Fue interesante experimentar la hermosa música, los bailarines y la liturgia de la Virgen el sábado. La comida estuvo deliciosa, pero aún así había una sensación de limitación por no celebrar el 12 de diciembre.
Luego, en las Mañanitas el 12 de diciembre, los bailarines tuvieron un poco más alegría en sus pasos. Hubo un poco más emoción mientras el coro cantaba. La bendición final para las Mañanitas simplemente fue un poco más emotiva que el día anterior.
Cuando fuimos a comer después de las Mañanitas, la alegría de la fiesta se hizo más evidente. Entiendo por qué los líderes de la iglesia pueden insistir en que cuando la fiesta cae en domingo, debería haber un día alternativo para Guadalupe, pero creo que muchos no ven la importancia del día para los pobres entre nosotros. ¡Que viva la Virgen!

I can say that the most beautiful and natural expressions of joy which I have seen in my life were in poor people who had little to hold on to. (EG.7)
Each year during celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the most beautiful expressions of joy are seen in the poor and in children. The celebrations of a novena took place at 5:30 am for nine days in a small town in Oklahoma. Each morning before going to work, many participated in praying the rosary, then celebrating Mass. The community is poor by monetary standards, but rich in tradition. This hardworking community expresses joy in celebrating their faith.
This year, the Feast fell on a Sunday. Parishes were told by bishops to celebrate the feast of the virgin on an alternative date, as the Sunday liturgy needed to celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent. The parish was obedient and celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe on Saturday. It was a joyful fiesta. On the morning of the twelfth the community celebrated the Mañanitas at 5:00 am. This was the real day of the Virgin. It was interesting to experience the beautiful music, the dancers and the liturgy for the Virgin on Saturday. The meal was delicious, but still there was a feeling of being limited by not celebrating on December 12.
Then at the Mañanitas on Dec. 12, the dancers had a little more joy in their dances. There was a bit more emotion as the choir sang. The closing blessing for the Mañanitas simply was a little more emotional than the day before.
When we went to eat after the Mañanitas, the joy of the feast day was more apparent. I understand why church leaders may insist that when the feast falls on a Sunday, there should be an alternative day for Guadalupe, but I think many fail to see the day’s importance to the poor amongst us. ¡Que viva la Virgen!

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
