¡Que viva la Virgen!
(Cuando la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe cae en domingo, muchos líderes de la Iglesia insisten en que celebremos la fiesta en un día diferente, ya que la liturgia del Tercer Domingo de Adviento tiene prioridad sobre otras fiestas. Siendo obedientes, celebramos la Fiesta el sábado. Alguien dijo: “Está bien, porque podemos tener una mejor fiesta el sábado”. Oremos para que los liturgistas tengan un Adviento muy bendecido, pero como alguien que camina con los mexicanos de fe, he venido a ver la celebración de la fiesta de la Virgen como parte intrínseca de nuestras celebraciones de Adviento).
¿No estoy yo aquí, que soy tu madre?
Cuando Juan Diego dudó de su capacidad para transmitir con éxito el mensaje de la Virgen al Obispo, la Virgen dijo: “¿No estoy aquí, yo, que soy tu madre? ¿No soy yo la fuente de tu alegría? ¿No estás tú en el hueco de mi manto, en el cruce de mis brazos? ¿Necesitas algo más?” (Nican Mopohua 119) Juan Diego era un converso reciente a la fe católica cuando se encontró con la Virgen en los cerros del Tepeyac “a los pocos días del mes de diciembre” en 1531. Estaba aprendiendo de los frailes el significado de su bautismo. Ciertamente aprendió que en su bautismo se unió al Cuerpo de Cristo. Era Adviento, y consideró lo que significaba su unión con Cristo. Cuando la Virgen dijo que era madre de Dios, descubrió una relación especial con su hermano Jesús. En los años después de los eventos Guadalupanos, relató a otros el amor por nuestra madre María.
Durante mis primeros años en el Ministerio Hispano, las celebraciones de las fiestas de la Virgen, Navidad, Cuaresma y Semana Santa fueron experiencias que me expusieron a un sentimiento de relación con Cristo, con nuestra madre María y con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la fe. ¡Que viva la Virgen!

(When the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe falls on a Sunday, many leaders in the Church insist that we celebrate the feast on a different day, as the Third Sunday of Advent liturgy takes precedence over other feasts. Being obedient, we celebrate the Feast on Saturday. Someone said, “It is okay, because we can have a better party on Saturday.” Let us pray that liturgists have a very blessed Advent, but as one walking with Mexican people of faith, I have come to see our celebration of the Feast of the Virgin as an intrinsic part of our Advent celebrations.)
Am I not here, I who am your mother?
When Juan Diego doubted his ability to successfully convey the message of the Virgin to the Bishop, the Virgin said, “Am I not here, I, who am your mother? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more?” (Nican Mopohua 119) Juan Diego was a recent convert to the Catholic faith when he encountered the Virgin in the hills of Tepeyac “a few days into the month of December” in 1531. He was learning from the friars the meaning of his baptism. He certainly learned that in his baptism he was joined to the Body of Christ. It was Advent, and he considered what his union with Christ meant. When the Virgin said, “I am truly your compassionate mother” (NM 29), he discovered a special relationship with his brother, Jesus. In the years after the events of Guadalupe, he conveyed to others love for our mother Mary.
During my early years in Hispanic Ministry, the celebrations of the feasts of the Virgin, Christmas, Lent and Holy Week were experiences that exposed me to a feeling of relationship with Christ, with our mother Mary and with our brothers and sisters in the faith. ¡Que viva la Virgen!

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
