Ayer escribí sobre el arte de dibujar en la arena. Mi idea de un artista de arena es capaz de calmar una situación difícil. Mientras Jesús dibujaba en la arena y en lugar de responder a las voces enojadas de los fariseos, después de dibujar en la arena, cambió la dirección de la pregunta. Otro artista de arena en mi vida fue mi tío John.
Cuando nos reuníamos con primos y tíos, siempre teníamos discusiones serias sobre política, religión y deportes. Cuando las discusiones se volvían acaloradas, el tío John rompía la tensión diciendo: “Parece que necesitamos sándwiches”. Los bocadillos del tío John evitaron muchas peleas. Creo que si el tío Juan fuera uno de los discípulos de Jesús, no habría habido el milagro de los panes y los peces. Cuando Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos que dieran comida a la multitud, el tío John decía: “Entendido, haré unos bocadillos”.
El tío John preparaba los mejores sándwiches del mundo y también era el mejor pacificador en todas las reuniones familiares. Espero que más de nosotros nos convirtamos en artistas dibujando en la arena, como el tío John.

Uncle John, an artist at sand drawing
Yesterday, I wrote about the art of drawing in the sand. My idea of a sand artist is one able to defuse a difficult situation. As Jesus drew in the sand and rather than answer the angry voices of the Pharisees, after drawing in the sand, he changed the direction of the question. Another sand artist in my life was my uncle John.
When we gathered with cousins and aunts and uncles, we always had serious discussions about politics, religion and sports. When the discussions became heated, Uncle John would break the tension saying, “Sounds like we need sandwiches.” Uncle John’s sandwiches prevented many fights. I believe that if Uncle John was one of Jesus’ disciples, there would not have been the miracle of the loaves and fish. When Jesus told his disciples to give food to the crowds, Uncle John would say, “Got it, I’ll make some sandwiches.”
Uncle John made the world’s best sandwiches and he also was the top peacemaker at all family gatherings. I hope more of us become artists a sand drawing, like Uncle John.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
