Dar Gracias
“Dar gracias” es una de las virtudes humanas más importantes. Es fácil dejar que las emociones de alegría, sorpresa, alivio y semejante sean una primera respuesta, pero el agradecimiento implica la conexión con los demás. El Evangelio para la fiesta de Acción de Gracias es la historia de Jesús sanando a diez leprosos, y solo uno regresó para dar gracias. Mientras nueve de los leprosos sanados se sintieron atrapados en el gozo y el alivio de la curación, solo uno regresó para agradecer a Jesús. Mientras nos reunimos con amigos y familias para celebrar el Día de Acción de Gracias, nuestro primer agradecimiento va a la fuente de toda bondad, Dios.
La semana pasada falleció una mujer a los 99 años. Vivió una vida muy plena. Lamentablemente, solo la conocí en el último mes de su vida. La visité cinco o seis veces en ese mes. Solo en la primera ocasión pudimos hablar, pero vi a los miembros de la familia reunirse alrededor de su madre, abuela y bisabuela. Cinco generaciones reunidas en tristeza, oración y gratitud. Como su fallecimiento era inminente las historias contadas fueron recuerdos de buenos momentos, lecciones aprendidas y mientras algunos derramaron lágrimas, siempre hubo gratitud.
Mientras salía a caminar por un camino de tierra, una camioneta me pasó, se detuvo y retrocedió. El chofer preguntó: “¿Vas a celebrar el funeral de la señora G? Era una buena mujer. Verla en la tienda o en la oficina de correos siempre me alegraba el día”. No era un miembro de la familia ni un católico. Sabía que yo había estado en la ciudad muy poco tiempo, pero quería que supiera de la “anciana” que era conocida por todos en el pueblo.
Durante el velorio y el funeral, muchos se reunieron. En la muerte, hay lágrimas y la oportunidad de conectarse con personas que no se ven en mucho tiempo. Solo hay tiempo para las buenas historias. A pesar de todo, damos gracias por haber tenido el privilegio de conocer y amar a una “buena persona”.

Giving Thanks
“Giving Thanks” is a most important human virtue. It is easy to let emotions of joy, surprise, relief and such to be a first response, but thanks involves connection with others. The Gospel for the feast of Thanksgiving is the story of Jesus healing ten lepers, and only one returned to give thanks. As nine of the lepers healed were caught up in the joy and relief of healing, only one came back to thank Jesus. As we gather with friends and families to celebrate Thanksgiving Day, our first thank you goes to the source of all goodness, God.
Last week, a woman passed at 99 years of age. She lived a very full life. Sadly, I only knew her in the last month of her life. I visited her five or six times in that month. Only on the first occasion were we able to talk, but I watched family members gathering around their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Five generations gathered in sadness, prayer and gratitude. As her passing was imminent the stories told were memories of good times, lessons learned and while some shed tears, there was always gratitude.
As I went for a walk on a dirt road, a pick-up passed me, stopped and backed up. The driver asked, “Are you going to celebrate the funeral for Miss G? She was a good woman. Seeing her at the store or the post office always made my day.” He was not a family member or a Catholic. He knew that I had only been in town a very short time, but he wanted me to know about the “old woman” who was known by everyone in town.
During the wake and funeral, many gathered. In death, there are tears, and opportunity to connect with people not seen for a long time. There is only time for the good stories. Through it all, we give thanks that we have had the privilege of knowing and loving a “good person”.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
