Una misión para un mundo herido
El Papa Juan Pablo II dijo en 1983 que la Nueva Evangelización debe ser “nueva en su ardor, en sus métodos y en su expresión”. El formato de la misión parroquial redentorista, llamado misión popular, está fundado en las misiones ofrecidas por San Alfonso Ligorio y sus cohermanos. A lo largo de los siglos ha adoptado diferentes métodos y expresiones. Los redentoristas predican tales misiones en países de todo el mundo. Los objetivos de la misión de animar la fe en la vida de las personas en torno a temas básicos de la fe se ofrecen en muchas naciones, pero los métodos y la expresión varían de continente a continente, de nación a nación y de comunidad a comunidad. A menudo, las misiones en los Estados Unidos pueden completarse en una o dos semanas, ha habido una variedad de formas en que las bandas misioneras han respondido a las necesidades de las comunidades multiculturales y multilingües.
Antes de la pandemia de COVID 19, había señales de la necesidad de revisar el deseo del Papa Juan Pablo II de nuevos métodos y nuevas expresiones. La pandemia creó nuevos desafíos para las misiones ofrecidas, como la reunión limitada de personas para las misiones. Las respuestas creativas surgieron en el uso de plataformas de televisión, radio, Internet y redes sociales. Estos han sido útiles, pero siempre existe la necesidad de un ministerio local basado en la comunidad. Es importante que la visión de nuevos métodos y expresiones al ofrecer la misión popular busque responder tanto a los desafíos de COVID como a la disminución de la eficacia de los métodos de misión tradicionales.
El propósito de la misión
El proposito de la misión es la evangelización. El mensaje incluye Escritura y catequesis, pero su intención es motivar a las personas a vivir la fe. En los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II, la encíclica Evangelii Nuntiandi del Papa Pablo VI y la exhortación apostólica Ecclesia in America del Papa Juan Pablo II, la gente no es evangelizada por la doctrina o la catequesis. Es el testimonio de la fe vivida que evangeliza al nuevo creyente. Cuando una persona es evangelizada, busca una mejor comprensión de la fe. En el programa del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA), el período intenso de catequesis tiene lugar después de que la persona ha recibido los sacramentos de iniciación llamado la Mistagogia.
Dentro de la misión predicada, la doctrina, la catequesis y la moral son partes esenciales de los eventos predicados, pero la misión quiere animar a la gente a ser testigos de la fe. Los temas de una Misión a un Mundo Herido son:
- La Palabra de Dios: El Evangelio de Juan comienza, “En el principio era el Verbo”. En un mundo que sufre de división, violencia y desastres, comenzamos con la Palabra de Dios. En Génesis, Dios miró a toda la creación y al final de cada día, Dios vio que era bueno. Nos enfocamos en la bondad de Dios.
- La Encarnación: El Verbo se hizo carne. La persona en el centro de la historia del nacimiento de Jesús es María. Consideramos su ejemplo de fe y su papel en la salvación.
- La luz del mundo: La enseñanza de Jesús trae luz al mundo y llama a las personas fieles a una relación con Dios como un Padre amoroso.
- Salvación a través de la Cruz: La reflexión sobre el acto de la salvación descubre las tinieblas que provienen del pecado, pero también muestra un camino hacia la salvación a través del perdón y el sacrificio.
- Eucaristía, somos el Cuerpo de Cristo: Nuestra unión con Cristo alrededor de la mesa de la Eucaristía nos fortalece con la gracia de vivir como testigos de la fe.
Experimentando con una misión de cinco semanas
Ore por la gente de Eden, Eola y Millersview, Texas. Estaré presente en la comunidad durante once semanas mientras el pastor esté fuera. Ofreceré noches de misión en cada una de las comunidades una noche a la semana. También habrá una velada en español en Eden. También ofreceré a aquellos que no puedan asistir a un servicio vespertino que se celebren conferencias misioneras también por las mañanas. El objetivo es ofrecer a todos un momento conveniente para venir. Con el número de conferencias que se ofrecen cada semana, los grupos pueden ser más reducidos, respetando la gravedad de la crisis de COVID.
Que Dios bendiga todos los experimentos de evangelización a través de los medios, pero reconozcamos también la importancia de responder a las necesidades locales y ofrecer oportunidades saludables para reunir a las personas en la fe.

A Mission for a Wounded World
Pope John Paul II said in 1983, the New Evangelization must be “new in its ardor, its methods and in its expression.” The Redemptorist parish mission format, called the popular mission is based on the foundation of missions offered by St. Alphonsus Liguori and his confreres. Over the centuries it has taken different methods and expressions. Redemptorists preach such missions in countries around the world. The mission´s goals of animating faith in the lives of people around basic themes of faith are offered in many nations, but the methods and expression vary from continent to continent, from nation to nation and from community to community. Often the missions in the United States may be completed in a week or two weeks, there has been a variety of ways that mission bands have responded to needs of multicultural and multilingual communities.
Before the COVID 19 pandemic, there were signs of a need for reviewing Pope John Paul II’s desire for new methods and new expressions. The pandemic created new challenges for offering missions, such as limited gathering of people for the missions. Creative responses came in the use of television, radio, internet and social media platforms. Those have been helpful, but there is always a need for local, community-based ministry. It is important that envisioning new methods and expression in offering the popular mission seek to respond to both the challenges of COVID and to the diminishing effectiveness of traditional mission methods.
The purpose of the mission
The primary objective of the mission is Evangelization. The message includes Scripture and catechesis, but its intention is to motivate people to live the faith. In documents of the Second Vatican Council, the encyclical Evangelii Nuntiandi of Pope Paul VI and the apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in America by Pope John Paul II, people are not evangelized by doctrine or catechesis. It is the testimony of lived faith that evangelizes the new believer. Once a person is evangelized, he or she seeks better understanding of the faith. In program of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), the intense period of catechesis takes place after the person has received the sacraments of initiation called Mystagogia.
Within the preached mission, doctrine, catechesis and morality are essential parts of the preached events, but everything in a mission is done to animate people to be witnesses to the faith. The themes of a Mission to a Wounded World are:
- The Word of God: The Gospel of John begins, “In the beginning was the Word.” In a world suffering from division, violence and disasters, we begin with the Word of God. In Genesis God looked at all of creation and at the end of each day, God saw that it was good. We focus on the goodness of God.
- The Incarnation: The Word became flesh. The person at the center of the story of Jesus’ birth is Mary. We consider her example of faith and her role in salvation.
- The Light of the World: Jesus teaching brings light to the world, and calls on faithful people to a relationship with God as a loving Father.
- Salvation through the Cross: Reflection on the act of salvation discovers the darkness that comes from sin, but also shows a way to salvation through forgiveness and sacrifice.
- Eucharist, we are the Body of Christ: Our union with Christ around the table of the Eucharist fortifies us with the grace to live as witnesses to the faith.
Experimenting with a five-week mission
Pray for the people of Eden, Eola and Millersview, Texas. I will be present in the community for eleven weeks while the pastor is away. I will be offering mission evenings in each of the communities one evening per week. There will also be an evening in Spanish in Eden. I will also offer those who may not be able to attend an evening service to have mission conferences held also in the mornings. The goal is to offer everyone a convenient time to come. With the number of conferences offered each week, the groups may be smaller, respecting the seriousness of the COVID crisis.
May God bless all of the experiments of evangelization through media, but let us also recognize the importance of responding to local needs and offering healthy opportunities to gather people in faith.
