10. “Walk with my people” : Orar con jóvenes migrantes – Praying with migrant youth

A principios de mayo, comencé unas reflexiones sobre caminar con las personas que me introdujeron en el Ministerio Hispano. Algunas de mis reflexiones fueron sobre la formación de la iniciativa Casa San Alfonso en Denver, que se desarrolló entre 1991 y 1996. Recientemente me preguntaron sobre “momentos especiales de felicidad o tristeza en mi vida”. Cuando comencé a escribir sobre Casa San Alfonso, me di cuenta de que los dos momentos más felices de mi vida fueron mis años en Casa San Alfonso y mis veranos trabajando con campesinos migrantes en Oregón y California de 1998 a 2012. Tengo historias de muchas personas que tocaron mi vida en esos dos períodos de ministerio. Continua ahora mis reflexiones sobre “caminar con mi gente”.
Orando con la juventud migrante
Antes de abrir Casa San Alfonso, había un programa de ministerio juvenil activo en la Iglesia San José en Denver. Presentamos la idea de Casa San Alfonso a los jóvenes durante el verano de 1991. Todos los programas de formación religiosa y sacramental continuarían en la parroquia. Los programas culturales, deportivos y sociales continuaron también en la parroquia. Aunque los jóvenes se sentían cómodos con los sacerdotes y el hermano que participaban en el ministerio juvenil, rara vez llamaban o entraban a la rectoría. Queríamos un hogar donde los jóvenes se sintieran cómodos para entrar en cualquier momento para visitar a la comunidad religiosa.
Unas semanas antes de la inauguración de la Casa San Alfonso, invitamos a los jóvenes a orar con nosotros por la iniciativa de la Casa. Presentamos a los jóvenes una forma de oración de Taize, Francia. Las reuniones de oración duraban solo media hora y presentamos el método de oración Taizé. Los jóvenes acogieron el ambiente, la música y una invitación a la oración. Pronto pidieron cantar un canto propia como parte del servicio. Era la canción de un joven solitario y perdido que buscaba la paz. Cantaron la canción en todas las ocasiones en que invitamos a la gente a orar.

Después de unos meses, pregunté por qué esta canción era especial para los jóvenes. Dijeron que todos conocen la soledad y la desesperación del joven solo, con ganas de morir. También dijeron que escuchan la historia de Jesús y sienten su amor, especialmente cuando rezan juntos esta canción.
Para los Redentoristas de Casa San Alfonso, los jóvenes compartieron sus luchas y su alegría en la fe. Siempre cuento mis días en Casa San Alfonso entre los días más felices de mi vida.

More “Walk with my people” stories
At the beginning of May, I began a series of reflections on walking with the people who introduced me to Hispanic Ministry. Some of my reflections were about the formation of the Casa San Alfonso initiative in Denver, that ran from 1991 to 1996. I was recently asked about “the special times of happiness or sorrow in my life.” As I began writing about Casa San Alfonso, I realize that my two happiest times in life were my years at Casa San Alfonso and my summers working with migrant farm workers in Oregon and California from 1998 to 2012. I have the stories of many people who touched my life in those two periods of ministry. I now resume, my reflections on “walk with my people.”
Praying with migrant youth
Before we opened Casa San Alfonso, there was an active youth ministry program at St. Joseph Church in Denver. We introduced the idea of Casa San Alfonso to the youth over the summer of 1991. All of the religious and sacramental formation programs were to continue at the parish. Cultural, athletic and social programs continued also at the parish. Even while youth were comfortable with the priests and brother engaged in youth ministry, they rarely called or entered the rectory. We wanted a home where young people felt comfortable to enter at any time to visit with the religious community.
Several weeks before opening Casa San Alfonso, we invited young people to pray with us about the Redemptorist initiative of the Casa. We introduced the young people to a form of prayer coming s monastery in Taize, France. The prayer meetings were only for a half hour and we introduced the Taize method of prayer. The youth embraced the atmosphere, the music and an invitation to pray. Soon they asked to sing a song of their own as part of the service. It was the song of a lonely, lost young man looking for peace. They sang the song on every occasion when we invited people to pray.

That you had died for me on the cross
I cried at that time
Remembering the time
That time that I lived without knowing about you
And here it is

To praise you lord
And here they are
My desire to love
To live
And Forgive
After many months, I asked why this song was special with the youth. They said that they all know the loneliness and the despair of the young man alone, wanting to die. They also said they hear the story of Jesus and they feel his love, especially when they pray this song together.
For the Redemptorists of Casa San Alfonso, the young people shared their struggles and their joy in the faith. I always count my days at Casa San Alfonso among the happiest days of my life.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
