8. “Walk with my people” : La Fiesta

La Fiesta
La Fiesta fue una parte importante de nuestro ministerio en Casa San Alfonso. Uno de nuestros padrinos dijo de los mexicanos, “Somos fiesteros”. Cuando comenzamos la casa de la juventud, celebramos cumpleaños, días de santos, todas las fiestas de las comunidades de donde provenían los jóvenes. Celebramos los días santos de la Iglesia y especialmente las fiestas de María y las Posadas. Si no hubiera motivo para una fiesta, se inventaría un motivo. Casa San Alfonso era una comunidad acogedora para jóvenes que buscaban una vida mejor en Denver. Qué mejor manera de recibir a los jóvenes que tener una FIESTA.
Algunos ministros de la Iglesia se preguntaron si alguna vez desarrollaríamos un ministerio “serio”. Abrimos nuestras puertas a los jóvenes sin familia aquí. Muchos hombres jóvenes llegaron a los Estados Unidos en busca de trabajo para ayudar a sus familias en sus países de origen. Podían venir a la Casa y encontrar amigos que conocían su viaje. Sabían que los Redentoristas en la Casa simplemente les dieron la bienvenida tal como son y no los empujaron a una religiosidad desconocida para ellos.
El Papa Francisco advirtió de la tentación de ser “amargados”. En Casa San Alfonso no hubo gente con “cara de vinagre”. El mensaje de la Casa era de esperanza y misericordia. Una de las canciones favoritas del grupo juvenil fue “Un Día Caminaba”. Es una balada de un joven triste y solitario. Quería morir, pero oyó hablar de Jesús. Jesús murió por él en la cruz y resucitó. Le pregunté al grupo por qué esta canción era tan popular entre ellos. Uno de los jóvenes dijo: “Conocemos soledad y tristeza. Nos identificamos con el deseo de morir. Pero, aquí no estamos solos. Escuchamos acerca de la fe antes, pero aquí se nos muestra el amor de Dios.”
Decimos que tenemos la “Buena Nueva”. Si este es verdadero, tuvimos que celebrar la fiesta en Casa San Alfonso. Una de las alegrías de mi vida como misionero es la fiesta con los pobres. A menudo, cuando visito una casa sin previo aviso, pronto la mujer de la casa dice: “Padre, venga a comer”. Pronto llegan niños, primos, tíos y vecinos. Empieza la fiesta. Mi gente celebra la llegada de un invitado, especialmente si es un sacerdote o un religioso. Si caminas con mi gente, prepárate siempre para la FIESTA.

La Fiesta
The Fiesta was an important part of our ministry at Casa San Alfonso. One of our padrinos said of Mexicans, “Somos fiesteros.” When we began the youth house, we celebrated birthdays, saints days, all the feasts of the communities that our young people came from. We celebrated Church holy days and especially the feasts of Mary and the Posadas. If there was no reason for a party, a reason would be made up. Casa San Alfonso was a welcoming community for young people seeking a better life in Denver. What better way to receive the youth than to have a FIESTA.
Some Church ministers wondered if we would ever develop a “serious” ministry. We opened our doors to young people without families here. Many young men arrived in the U.S. seeking work to help their families in their home countries. They could come to the Casa and find friends who knew their journey. They knew that the Redemptorists in the Casa simply welcomed them as they are and did not push them into a religiosity unfamiliar to them.
Pope Francis warned of the temptation to be “sourpusses”. There were no “sourpusses” at Casa San Alfonso. The message of the Casa was one of hope and mercy. A favorite song of our youth group was “Un Día Caminaba”. (One day, I was walking) It is a ballad of a sad, lonely young man. He wished to be dead, but then he heard of Jesus. Jesus died for him on the cross, and he is risen. I asked the group why this song was so popular with them. One of our young men said, “We’ve been lonely and discouraged. We identify with the desire to die. But, here we know that we are not alone. We heard about faith before, but here we have God’s love shown to us.”
We say that we follow the “Good News.” To witness “Good News,” we had to celebrate fiesta at Casa San Alfonso. One of the joys of my life as a missionary is to party with the poor. Often, when I visit a home unannounced, soon the woman of the house says, “Padre, come and eat.” Soon children, cousins, aunts and uncles and neighbors arrive. The fiesta begins. People celebrate the arrival of a guest, especially blessed if he is a priest or a religious. If you walk with my people, always be ready for the FIESTA.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
