¿Qué es realmente necesario para recibir los sacramentos en la Iglesia?
La respuesta a esta pregunta es fácil, Fe. Cuando Felipe se encontró con el tesorero de la reina de etíope, le enseñó al hombre de Jesús, y a los pocos minutos, el etíope preguntó: “Hay agua. ¿Qué impedirá que me bautice?” Profesó su fe y fue bautizado. No hubo un largo período de instrucción, tiempo de prueba y discernimiento. Creyó y recibió la gracia del Bautismo.
Entiendo los objetivos de educar a los católicos en la fe y la importancia de los sacramentos en nuestras vidas, pero a menudo, los requisitos para la recepción de los sacramentos en muchas parroquias niegan a los pobres el acceso a los sacramentos. Largos períodos de preparación, requisitos rígidos de asistencia a las clases, programación inflexible preparando candidatos por los sacramentos, y falta de atención a los costos reales para los pobres, en efecto, niegan a muchos niños pobres los sacramentos de iniciación.
Las prácticas que buscan ayudar a las personas a comprender los sacramentos y nuestra vida de fe son buenas. What is truly necessary to receive sacraments in the Church?
The answer to this question is easy, Faith. When Philip met the treasurer of the Ethiopian queen, he taught him about Jesus and a few minutes down the road, the Ethiopian asked, “There is water. What is to stop me from being baptized?” He professed his faith and was baptized. There was no long period of instruction, time of testing and discernment. He believed, so he received the grace of Baptism.
I understand the goals of educating Catholics in the faith and the importance of the sacraments in our lives, but often, the requirements for receiving the sacraments in many parishes deny the poor access to the sacraments. Long preparation periods, rigid class attendance requirements, inflexible scheduling preparing candidates for the sacraments, and inattention to the real costs to the poor, in effect, deny many poor children the sacraments of initiation.
The practices that seek to help people understand the sacraments and our life of faith are good. The goals are proper, but they are only of value if they open the door to the poor to enter our communities of faith. There is no price for grace, but sometimes getting attention in our churches costs a lot.
The present crisis gives us an opportunity to consider new ways of bringing people to the grace of the sacraments. As we begin to open our churches to gathering people once again, let us consider new ways to get our message across and not simply look to the way we have done things in the past.
