Don’t tell me you are Catholic, show me / No me digas que eres católico, demuéstramelo

No me digas que eres católico, demuéstramelo

Cuando estaba en séptimo grado, hubo una convención de vocaciones patrocinada por el club Serra. Había un folleto de una congregación misionera que nunca olvidé. Decía: “No me digas que eres católico, demuéstramelo”. El folleto mostraba a personas sin hogar, niños hambrientos y un gran sufrimiento en tierras extranjeras, pero era Jesús el que decía: “muéstramelo”. Entré en un seminario menor después del octavo grado no para convertirme en sacerdote, sino para convertirme en Redentorista. Una congregación llamada a “servir a los más abandonados”, y mi manera de servir a los abandonados era como sacerdote misionero.

Con el paso de los años, me olvidé del folleto “muéstramelo”, pero lo recordé cuando escuché declaraciones recientes de políticos que comenzaban con “soy católico” o “soy cristiano” y luego respaldaban acciones para castigar, deportar, abusar y separar a las familias de las personas abandonadas por la sociedad. La primera acción de “muéstrame” que eres católico y cristiano es reconocer a Jesús en el “hambriento”, el “sediento”, el “extranjero”, el “desnudo” y el “prisionero” (cf. Mt. 25:35-36).

Es interesante que quienes abogan por el cuidado de los pobres, los inmigrantes, los enfermos, los niños y los adictos no sientan la urgencia de identificarse de su religión. Quienes sirven comida en los refugios para personas sin hogar, aconsejan a los afligidos, defienden a los indefensos y perdonan a los demás no tienen necesidad de decir: “Soy católico, soy cristiano”. Lo demuestran.

Don’t tell me you are Catholic, show me

There was a vocation convention sponsored by the Serra club when I was in seventh grade. There was one brochure of a missionary congregation that I never forgot. It said, “Don’t tell me you are Catholic, show me.” The brochure pictured homeless people, starving children and great suffering in foreign lands, but it was Jesus saying, “show me”. I entered a minor seminary after eighth grade not to become a priest, but to become a Redemptorist. A congregation called to “serve the most abandoned”, and my way to serve abandoned was as a missionary priest.

Over the years, I forgot about the “show me” brochure, but I remembered it when hearing recent statements from politicians beginning with, “I’m Catholic” or “I’m Christian” and then they endorse actions to punish, deport, abuse and separate the families of people abandoned by society. The first action of “show me” that you are Catholic and Christian is to recognize Jesus, in the “hungry”, the “thirsty”, the “stranger”, the “naked”, and the “prisoner” (cf. Mt. 25:35-36)

It is interesting that advocates of care for the poor, the immigrant, the sick, the child, the addicted experience no urgency to identify their religious background. Those serving food at homeless shelters, counseling the grieving, defending the defenseless and forgiving others have no need to say, “I’m Catholic, I’m Christian”. They show it.

La importancia de financiar organizaciones comunitarias sin fines de lucro

Durante dos años, en la década de 1980 y durante toda la década de 1990, viví en el centro de la ciudad al sur y al oeste del centro de Denver. Los barrios se identificaban Auraria, Mariposa y Baker. Había muchos niños en el área. La gran mayoría de los cuales habían nacido en los Estados Unidos. La comunidad adulta incluía ciudadanos estadounidenses hispanos, inmigrantes que se encontraban legalmente en el país e inmigrantes sin inspección. Era una comunidad que fácilmente podría haber sido un foco de pandillas, delincuencia y muchos de los problemas identificados con las áreas pobres del centro de la ciudad. Era una zona de pobreza.

The importance of funding non-profit community organizations

For two years in the 1980s and throughout the 1990s, I lived in the inner-city south and west of downtown Denver. The neighborhoods were identified as Auraria and Baker. There were a lot of children in the area. The vast majority of whom had been born in the United States. The adult community included Hispanic American citizens, immigrants who were in the country legally, and immigrants without inspection. It was a community that could easily have been a hotbed for gangs, crime, and many of the problems identified with poor inner-city areas. It was an area of ​​poverty.

St. Joseph Church was in the center of the barrio. In 1991, Redemptorists established Casa San Alfonso, a safe-house for young people in the barrio. We worked in cooperation with schools, government agencies, social services, and many non-profit groups offering services for the poor. I was one of the chaplains for the Weed and Seed program of the Police Department that was initiated by President George H. W. Bush. Our community established a good working relationship with Immigration Naturalization Services. We had good relationships with Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Mariposa Clinic, several churches in the area, and several food banks in the community.

It was a partnership of schools, churches, non-profit organizations, and state and government agencies that allowed the community to develop and not fall into chaos. Such partnerships are needed in every community, and the partnerships are in danger with the reckless attacks on community organizations by the Trump administration today and the MAGA movement. Pray that greed and racism be overcome by love and justice.

Truth about Crime and Migrants

There is a constant insistence by politicians that there is a high level of criminality by immigrants. The PEW Institute and the Migration Policy Institute have made important studies concerning immigrant criminality. The exaggeration of immigration criminality is repeated often by politicians and very little fact checking has been done in most of the U.S. media.

The Migration Policy Institute is an independent, nonpartisan think tank that seeks to improve immigration and integration policies. Here are a few observations of MPI about the criminal activity of migrants and immigrants: (from a study, October 2024) MPI: Explainer-Immigrants and Crime

  • Immigrants in the United States commit crimes at lower rates than the U.S.-born population, notwithstanding the assertion by critics that immigration is linked to higher rates of criminal activity.
  • A growing volume of research demonstrates that not only do immigrants commit fewer crimes, but they also do not raise crime rates in the U.S. communities where they settle. In fact, some studies indicate that immigration can lower criminal activity, especially violent crime, in places with inclusive policiesand social environments where immigrant populations are well established.

Also:

A federal study based on Texas Department of Public Safety data found that immigrants of all legal statuses were arrested at:

  • Less than half the rate of U.S. born citizens for violent and drug crimes
  • One-quarter of the rate of the U.S. born for property crimes

Que todos los hombres son creados iguales

La Declaración de Independencia imagina una nación que “considera que estas verdades son evidentes por sí mismas: que todos los hombres son creados iguales”.

Esta misma verdad se afirma en “Declaración Dignitatis infinita sobre la dignidad humana” (Dicasterio para la Doctrina de la Fe, 2 de abril de 2024): “Una dignidad infinita, que se fundamenta inalienablemente en su propio ser, le corresponde a cada persona humana, más allá de toda circunstancia y en cualquier estado o situación en que se encuentre. Este principio, plenamente reconocible incluso por la sola razón, fundamenta la primacía de la persona humana y la protección de sus derechos.”

Sin embargo, nuestra nación no cumple con las verdades evidentes de la Declaración de Independencia y nuestra enseñanza católica sobre la dignidad humana. En la historia de los Estados Unidos, hemos vivido más en desacuerdo con las verdades evidentes de la declaración que en cumplimiento. El prejuicio y la xenofobia son las fuerzas impulsoras de la vida y la presidencia del presidente Trump.

Cada día, demuestra más crueldad que el día anterior. Parece que no hay control para su abuso de poder en el Congreso o el Senado. El poder judicial reconoce los abusos del presidente, pero se niega a penalizarlo por sus acciones inconstitucionales. Quiero ser optimista y tener esperanza, pero al considerar este momento de la historia, es difícil tener esperanza en este país. Hoy, las personas que ofrecen el mínimo acto de bondad a un refugiado, a un trabajador migrante, a un niño sin seguridad en su barrio o en su hogar, y a las personas desafortunadas de nuestra sociedad son consideradas antipatrióticas y culpables del crimen de creer en las verdades profesadas en la fundación de los Estados Unidos.

En tres semanas, la erosión de la decencia, la compasión y el respeto por todos hombres y mujeres no sólo pone en peligro personas de los Estados Unidos, sino a todo el mundo. Incluso si uno no es una persona particularmente religiosa, la base de una sociedad funcional comienza con la verdad. Negar la historia es una locura. No utilizar la experiencia y la ciencia para enfrentar los desafíos del clima, la salud, la psicología, la sociología y la ley, destruye la sociedad y pone en peligro a todo el mundo.

Estoy cansado de escuchar a hombres enojados, ricos y privilegiados desacreditando la ley y la dignidad humana de todas las personas. Nunca olviden que “todos los hombres (y mujeres) son creados iguales”. Y aún más importante, “Ámense unos a otros como yo los he amado” (Jn. 13:34).

That all men are created equal

The Declaration of Independence imagines a nation that “hold(s) these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

This same truth is stated in “Declaration Dignitatis infinita on Human Dignity”. (Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, April 2, 2024): “Every human person possesses an infinite dignity, inalienably grounded in his or her very being, which prevails in and beyond every circumstance, state, or situation the person may ever encounter. This principle, which is fully recognizable even by reason alone, underlies the primacy of the human person and the protection of human rights.”

Yet our nation is out of compliance with the self-evident truths of the Declaration of Independence and our Catholic teaching on Human Dignity. In the United States history, we have lived more out of compliance with the self-evident truths of the declaration than in compliance. Prejudice and xenophobia are the driving forces of President Trump’s life and presidency.

Every day, he demonstrates more cruelty than the day before. There appears to be no check to his abuse of power in the Congress or the Senate. The judiciary recognizes the abuses of the President, but refuses to penalize him for his unconstitutional actions. I want to be optimistic and hopeful, but as I consider this moment in history, it is difficult to be hopeful in the United States. Today, people offering the smallest act of kindness to a refugee, a migrant worker, a child without security in their barrio or even home, and to the unfortunate people of our society are considered unpatriotic and guilty of the crime of believing in the truths professed at the founding of the United States.

In three weeks, the erosion of decency, compassion and respect for each and every man and woman has endangered not only the United States, but all people. Even if one is not a particularly religious person, the foundation of a functioning society begins with truth. Denying history is folly. Failing to use experience and science to meet challenges of climate, health, psychology, sociology and law, break down society and endanger everyone.

I’m tired of listening to angry, rich, privileged men (mostly) discrediting law and human dignity of all people. Never forget “all men (and women) are created equal”. And even more importantly, “Love one another as I have loved you.” (Jn. 13:34)

Compasión

Necesitamos aprender a encender la luz cuando la oscuridad nos rodea. En su libro, “Tatuajes en el corazón”, el padre Greg Boyle, SJ cuenta las historias de sus muchos años trabajando con jóvenes pandilleros en Los Ángeles. Presenta luz y esperanza en un ministerio con jóvenes que son temidos y descartados en gran parte de la sociedad. Sin embargo, la luz y la esperanza no se encuentran en línea recta con éxito tras éxito. Dice que a veces el camino es “tres pasos hacia adelante, cinco pasos hacia atrás”. En una línea triste escribe sobre “los jóvenes que amo, matando a los jóvenes que amo”.

Admiro al padre Boyle y a Homeboy Industries por su liderazgo en el cuidado de los jóvenes que la sociedad descarta. Trabajar con jóvenes que crecen con disfunción en sus hogares, en sus escuelas, en sus barrios no es fácil, pero no se ayuda con la encarcelación, la des financiación de las escuelas, la deportación y el abandono. La compasión es una virtud aprendida en el ministerio de la pobreza. Comienza con la voluntad de escuchar, amar y caminar con los marginados de la sociedad. Es el camino de Cristo.

Compassion

We need to learn how to turn on the light when darkness surrounds us. In his book, “Tattoos on the Heart”, Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ tells the stories of his many years working with gang youth in Los Angeles. He presents light and hope in a ministry with young people who are feared and discounted in much of society. Yet, the light and hope is not found in straight line with success after success. He says sometimes the walk is “three steps forward, five steps backward.” In a heartbreaking line he writes about “kids I love, killing kids I love.”

I admire Fr. Boyle and Homeboy Industries for their leadership in caring for the youth society discards. Working with young people growing up with disfunction in their homes, in their schools, in their barrios is not easy, but it is not aided by punishment, defunding of schools, deportation and neglect. Compassion is a learned virtue in poverty ministry. It begins with a willingness to listen, to love and to walk with the outcast of society. It is the way of Christ.

Imagínese decidir emigrar

Pasé varios meses estudiando a los migrantes y refugiados en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos en 2022. Fue parte de la preparación de los Redentoristas de México y Estados Unidos para crear una iniciativa misionera a lo largo de la frontera. A menudo les preguntábamos a los migrantes: “¿Qué lo motivó a abandonar su país de origen?”. Las respuestas a menudo comenzaban citando guerras, persecución, extorsión, pandillas y desesperación económica, pero casi siempre la motivación era la seguridad, el futuro, la esperanza y el cuidado de los miembros de la familia, especialmente los niños y los parientes mayores. Aproximadamente la mitad de los migrantes esperaban poder regresar a su propio país si las condiciones cambiaban en casa.

Ya sean migrantes que esperaban regresar a su país o que esperaban ganarse una vida en otro país, imagine qué influyó en la decisión de los migrantes de emigrar. La vida en su país de origen se volvió imposible de imaginar que mejorara. La variedad de historias muy similares iluminaba, pero también era difícil de imaginar.

“Después de que asesinaron a mi padre y a mi hermano, tuve que irme”.

“Después de recibir amenazas de que nuestra hija de diez años sería atacada, nos mudamos a un pueblo a 200 kilómetros de nuestra casa. Al poco tiempo recibimos otra amenaza: ‘Sabemos dónde estás. Páganos xxxx dólares o serás responsable de lo que le pase a ella’”.

“Nuestro hijo adolescente siempre es acosado por pandillas locales”.

Las presiones que motivan a las personas a emigrar varían de un migrante a otro, pero cuando escuché a los migrantes contar sus historias, recuerdo que un sacerdote de Michoacán me dijo: “La gente no se va por pobreza, se va por desesperación”. Es difícil imaginar que uno abandone su país sin tener la certeza de su futuro. ¿Qué haría falta para que usted decidiera que su única opción en la vida es abandonar su país de origen?

Imagine deciding to emigrate

I spent several months studying migrants and refugees on the Mexico/United States border in 2022. It was part of the preparation of Redemptorists of Mexico and the United States to create a missionary initiative along the border. We often asked migrants, “What motivated you to leave your country of origin?” The answers often began citing wars, persecution, extortion, gangs and economic desperation, but almost always the motivation was the security, future, hope and care for family members, especially children and elderly relatives. About half of the migrants hoped that they could return to their own country if conditions changed at home.

Whether they were migrants hoping to return to their country or hoping to make a life in another country, imagine what went into the decision that migrants make to emigrate. Life in their home country became impossible to imagine getting better. The variation of very similar stories enlightened, but also were hard to imagine.

“After my father and brother were murdered, I had to leave.”

“After receiving threats of harm to our ten-year-old daughter, we moved to a town 150 miles from our home. Soon we received another threat. ‘We know where you are. Pay us $xxx or you will be responsible for what happens to her.'”

“Our teenage son is harassed by local gangs.”

The pressures that motivate people to emigrate vary from migrant to migrant, but as I heard migrants tell their stories, I remember a priest in Michoacan telling me, “People do not leave because of poverty, they leave because of desperation.” Leaving one’s country without certainty of one’s future is difficult to imagine. What would it take for you to decide that your only option in life is to leave your country of origin?

La migración global es más de un problema de fronteras

Centrarse en las fronteras, especialmente la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos, impide comprender la migración, la emigración, la inmigración y la interconexión de todas las naciones del mundo. Estimaciones de la migración global presentadas por la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones de las Naciones Unidas y el Instituto Pew indican que hay más de 280 millones de personas en el mundo que viven fuera de sus países de origen. Esto representa el 3,4% de la población mundial. La población de personas que viven fuera de su país de nacimiento incluye a personas de todos los niveles sociales. La gran mayoría de las personas que se mudan y se establecen en otras naciones se desplazan por el mundo a través de canales legales. Las personas se mudan en busca de oportunidades de negocios en otros países, algunas para reunir a miembros de la familia que ya han abandonado sus países de origen, muchas para realizar estudios académicos y otras para participar en misiones religiosas y servicios médicos y social. Global Migration is more than a border issue

Focusing on borders, especially the Mexico/United States border, is a hinderance from understanding migration, emigration, immigration and the interconnectedness of all nations on earth. Estimates of global migration as presented by the United Nations International Organization for Migration and the Pew Institute indicate that there are over 280 million people in the world who live outside the nations of their birth. That is 3.4% of the total world population. The population of people living outside of their nation of birth includes people of all levels of society. The vast majority of people moving and establishing themselves in other nations move around the world through legal channels. People move for business opportunities in other countries, some to unite family members who have already left their countries of origin. Many for academic study, and others to engage in religious missions and medical services. International politics also accounts for people staying in other nations.

The true crisis of migration is in the realm of forced displacement, estimated at over 60 million people. These are people who move on account of wars, disasters, persecution, climate change, violence and other causes of desperation. Estimates of unauthorized presence of emigrants in the United States have hovered around 11 million people for most of the last twenty years. Over 50% of that number are overstays of people who arrived in the United States legally.

As I have worked with migrants for over thirty years, sadly there has been too little effort made to address the inadequacies of the legal process of authorized entry to the United States over the past fifty years, and this accounts for the chaotic images of people crossing our southern border. Actual statistics of how many people are detained, arrested and deported are difficult to attain and believe. Too often people inflate or deflate statistics to make their political point or for their own profit.

Only if the societal challenges caused by forced migrations and unauthorized presence within nations are addressed honestly, without anger and fear can true resolution be found for the problems caused by migration. Failure to address the challenges with integrity and compassion affects not only the unauthorized migrants and their families, but everyone within the United States and other nations receiving the desperate people of the world.
