Posada – Esther
Nuestro primer año en Casa San Alfonso fue una aventura de descubrimiento de lo que era posible para dar la bienvenida a los jóvenes a una comunidad de fe. Uno de nuestros mayores desafíos fue descubrir formas de involucrar a los jóvenes en la vida de fe. Como la comunidad de jóvenes estaba unida a la parroquia de San José, involucramos a los jóvenes en las celebraciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y Posadas en diciembre. Los jóvenes se reunían todas las noches antes de ir a la Iglesia para la fiesta de la Virgen y Posadas. La iglesia estaba a seis cuadras de la Casa. Una noche durante la Posada, algunos de nosotros caminamos hasta la iglesia. Varios permanecieron en la Casa. Ocho de ellos subieron a un pequeño Ford Escort para conducir hasta San José. La policía los detuvo a dos cuadras de la iglesia por tener demasiados en el auto. La chofer tenía algunas multas de tráfico impagas. La policía la arrestó.
Cuando los demás llegaron a la iglesia, nos dijeron que Esther fue arrestada. P. Patricio y yo fuimos a la cárcel y descubrimos que su fianza estaba fijada en $ 150 y tenía que pagarla en efectivo. No teníamos el dinero en efectivo a la mano y pedimos dinero prestado a unos amigos todavía limpiando a la iglesia después de la Posada. Era pasada la medianoche cuando la sacamos de la cárcel bajo fianza. Varios miembros de nuestra comunidad juvenil estaban presente cuando ella salió la cárcel. Regresamos a la Casa.
Rezamos juntos Completas para agradecer a Dios que pudimos sacar a Esther de la cárcel. Cuando terminó la oración, los jóvenes movieron los muebles para abrir una pista de baile en la Casa y comenzó la fiesta. Para entonces, la Casa llevaba abierta seis semanas. Oramos en los momentos oportunos y hubo momentos de discusión sobre la fe, pero sobre todo Casa San Alfonso fue un hogar alegre para los jóvenes en el barrio de San José. Esa noche cimentó nuestra relación con los jóvenes.

Posada – Esther
Our first year at Casa San Alfonso was an adventure of discovery of what was possible for welcoming young people to a community of faith. One of our greatest challenges was to discover ways of engaging youth into the life of faith. As the youth community was attached to St. Joseph’s parish, we involved young people in the celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Posadas in December. Young people met every evening before going to the Church for the feast of the Virgin and Posadas. The church was six blocks from the Casa. One evening during Posada, some of us walked to the church. Several remained at the Casa. Eight of them piled into a tiny Ford Escort to drive to San José. Police stopped them two blocks from the church for having too many in the car. The driver had some unpaid traffic tickets. The police arrested her.
When the others arrived at the church, they told us that Esther was arrested. Fr. Patrick and I went to the jail and we found that her bail was set at $150 and it had to be paid in cash. We did not have the cash on hand and borrowed money from a few friends at the church still cleaning up from the Posada. It was after midnight when we bailed her out of jail. Several of our youth community were at the jail to greet her. We went back to the Casa.
We prayed Compline together to thank God that we were able to get Esther out of jail. When the prayer was over, the youth moved the furniture to open up a dance floor in the Casa and the fiesta began. By that time the Casa had been open for six weeks. We prayed at opportune times, and there were times of faith discussion, but most of all Casa San Alfonso was a joyful home for youth in the barrio of San Jose. That night cemented our relationship with the young people.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
