¿Por qué escribí una autobiografía?
¿Por qué alguien querría leer mi autobiografía y mis reflexiones sobre más de treinta años dedicados a las personas que viven al margen de la sociedad? No ha sido una vida de ministerio exótica y mi experiencia ha sido a menudo difícil de explicar. He participado en iniciativas con jóvenes adultos, en misiones parroquiales bilingües, particularmente en comunidades rurales, he caminado con trabajadores migrantes en la agricultura y en plantas empacadoras, he participado en el ministerio en prisiones y centros de detención de migrantes y he trabajado con migrantes de todas partes del mundo. Muchos de los programas en que he trabajado ya no existen o han evolucionado mucho desde que trabajé en ellos. No he fundado instituciones que sirvan a los pobres, ni he creado programas ni he formado legiones de trabajadores dedicados al ministerio de la migración.
Lo que he hecho es seguir los sabios consejos de otras personas dedicadas al ministerio de la justicia, la educación y el cuidado de las personas que viven al margen de la sociedad. Me encanta contar las historias de las personas que me han inspirado a lo largo del camino. A menudo son los pobres quienes me han evangelizado. Mi viaje con los migrantes me abrió a la reflexión teológica y pastoral que quiero compartir con los demás. Cuando comencé a trabajar en el ministerio hispano, me dijeron que siguiera el Plan Pastoral Nacional para el Ministerio Hispano. Siempre admiré y respeté el proceso del Encuentro que condujo al primer plan publicado en 1987, pero no me impresionó de inmediato, pero con el tiempo se convirtió en mi vida.
En la revisión del plan pastoral, “Discípulos misioneros en salida con alegría”, reconozco que mi experiencia es dramáticamente paralela a lo que el documento admira en el proceso del Encuentro. Hay cuatro virtudes necesarias en el proceso: escuchar, dialogar, discernir y acompañar. Estos han sido mis principios rectores para el ministerio, especialmente el acompañamiento.
Agradezco a un buen amigo que es teólogo que dijo de este libro: “El libro es atractivo y perspicaz. No solo el lector aprende mucho sobre su viaje personal como sacerdote a través de narrativas interesantes y conmovedoras, sino que también su análisis sobre la vida del migrante hace una seria invitación a la reflexión teológica, individual y comunitaria. Si bien la obra es una memoria de mi caminar con migrantes, espero que los lectores perseveren en la lectura y entren en la reflexión teológica que mi amigo reconoció.

Why did I write an autobiography?
Why would someone care to read my autobiography, and my reflections on thirty plus years dedicated to people who live on the margins of society? It has not been an exotic life of ministry, and my experience has often been difficult to explain. I have participated in initiatives with young adults, peaching parish missions particularly in rural communities, walking with immigrant workers in agriculture and packing houses, engaged in ministry in prisons and immigrant detention centers, and worked with immigrants from all parts of the world. Many of the groups with whom I have worked no longer continue or they have evolved a great deal since I worked with them. I have not founded institutions serving the poor, or created programs or trained legions of dedicated workers in migration ministry.
What I have done is follow sage advice from others engaged in ministry, justice, education and care for people on the margins of society. I love to tell the stories of people who inspired me along the way. Often it is the poor who have evangelized me. My journey with the migrants opened me to theological and pastoral reflection that I want to share with others. When I began working in Hispanic ministry, I was told to follow the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry. I always admired and respected the Encuentro process that led to the first plan published in 1987, but it did not immediately impress me, but as time passed, it became my life.
In the revision of the pastoral plan, “Missionary Disciples Going forth with Joy”, I recognize my experience being dramatically parallel to what the document admires in the Encuentro process. There are four virtues needed in the process: listening, dialogue, discernment and accompaniment. These have been my guiding principles for ministry, especially accompaniment.
I thank a good friend who is a theologian who said of this book, “The book is enticing and insightful. Not only does the reader learn much about your personal journey as a priest through interesting and moving narratives, but also your analysis about migrant life makes a serious invitation to theological reflection, individually and communally. I enjoyed the work.”
While the work is a memoir of my walking with migrants, I hope that readers persevere in the reading and enter the theological reflection that my friend recognized.
