En este tiempo, nuestras lecturas dominicales nos llaman la atención al fin del año eclesial. No debemos tener miedo del fin de las cosas e incluso de nuestras vidas. No debemos temer a la oscuridad a medida que los días se acortan y las noches se alargan. Es en medio de la oscuridad, el miedo y la duda cuando nuestra fe es puesta a prueba. En las lecturas de este domingo, Jesús cuenta la parábola de tres personas a las que se les otorgan “talentos” según sus capacidades. A menudo se considera una medida de dinero. Dos usaron sus “talentos” para duplicar lo que les dieron, mientras que uno tomó su “talento” y lo enterró por miedo a perderlo. Cuando el maestro regresó, les preguntaron qué hacían con sus “talentos”.
Esta parábola es una metáfora de la vida. Cuando nuestras vidas comenzaron, el Maestro, Dios, nos dio “talentos” según nuestras capacidades. Lo que hacemos con ellos es la medida de nuestras vidas. La medida no se trata de cuántos talentos se nos dan, sino de si los utilizamos para mejorar la vida. Un entrenador dice: “No te preocupes por las victorias o las derrotas. Simplemente ayuda a estos jóvenes a ser la mejor versión de sí mismos dentro y fuera del campo”. La frase me llamó la atención mientras veía el programa de televisión de Ted Lasso. Se pueden encontrar variaciones de la frase en una variedad de escritos espirituales.
Con todos los temores de los inmigrantes que nos rodean, reconozcamos a los inmigrantes como personas que han elegido no enterrar sus “talentos”. Han corrido riesgos, abandonando la seguridad o la inseguridad de sus hogares para descubrir “la mejor versión de sí mismos”. Algunos hacen realidad sus esperanzas y sueños. Otros sufren mucho en su viaje. Algunos no logran llegar a un lugar mejor. Lo único que no han hecho es “enterrar su talento”.
El domingo, cuando escuches la parábola de los “talentos”, mantente abierto a aprovechar al máximo su talento y honra a quienes se arriesgan a perder la vida para descubrir la mejor versión de sí mismos.

What to do with our “talents”.
At this time of the year, our Sunday readings call our attention to the end of a year. We are to not be afraid of the end of things and even our lives. We are to not fear the darkness as our days become shorter, and the evenings longer. It is in the midst of darkness, fear and doubt when our faith is tested. In this Sunday’s readings, Jesus tells the parable of three people given “talents” according to their abilities. It is often considered a measurement of money. Two used their “talents” to double what they were given, while one took his “talent” and buried it out of fear that he could lose it. When the master returned, they were asked what they did with their “talents”.
This parable is a metaphor for life. When our lives began, we were given “talents” according to our abilities by the Master, God. What we do with them is the measure of our lives. The measure is not about how many talents we are given, but do we use them to make life better. A coach says, “Don’t worry about the wins or losses. Just help these guys be the best version of themselves on and off the field.” The phrase struck me as I watched the television program of Ted Lasso. Variations of the phrase may be found in a variety of spiritual writings.
With all the fears of migrants around us, let us recognize the migrant as people who have chosen not to bury their “talents”. They have taken risks, leaving the security or insecurity of their homes to discover “the best version of themselves.” Some realize their hopes and dreams. Others suffer greatly on their journey. Some fail to arrive at a better place. The one thing they have not done is “bury their talent”.
On Sunday, when you hear the parable of the “talents”, be open to making the best of your talent and honor those who take the risk losing life in order to discover the best version of themselves.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
