Es tiempo de viajar
En junio, la Red Católica Campesino Migrante junto con el Instituto de Estudios Pastorales de la Universidad Loyola de Chicago presentarán una capacitación de una semana para personas involucradas en el ministerio con los campesinos migrantes, “Vayan y Den Fruto”. Hoy estoy en Chicago para asistir a reuniones de preparación para el programa. Esta será la primera oportunidad para mí de presentar el tema de mi próximo libro, “Camina con mi pueblo: una vida en el ministerio de migración”. Tenía la intención de tener mi libro listo para su publicación antes de nuestra conferencia en junio, pero durante el resto del mes de abril visitaré a los campesinos y a los ministros campesinos con quienes trabajé cuando era director del Ministerio Campesino en Fresno. Es un paso necesario para llegar a la edición y traducción final del libro.
Ha pasado un tiempo desde que salí de gira. Voy a pasar un mes para estas visitas. Voy a merecer el nombre, Padre Migrante. Espero que mi libro esté disponible a finales del verano. Voy a presentar partes del libro por los blogs el resto de este mes. Habrá muchos temas en el libro que pueden resultar familiares en blogs anteriores, porque los más de seiscientos blogs realizados para el Padre Migrante fueron una buena fuente de material que forma parte de “Camina con Mi Pueblo”. NO COMIENZA EN LA FRONTERA
Todos los días, en los canales de noticias de todo Estados Unidos, aparecen imágenes de refugiados y solicitantes de asilo en los cruces de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México. Las imágenes son de personas desesperadas que huyen de alguna crisis en su propia nación. Pueden ser guerras, actividades criminales, terrorismo, desastres naturales o pobreza desesperada lo que mueve a las personas a tomar la decisión de abandonar su país de origen. Muchos provienen de países cuyos gobiernos no brindan seguridad, justicia, libertad, educación, atención médica y estabilidad económica. La abrumadora imagen de la migración muestra masas de personas en una frontera, no sólo en Estados Unidos, sino en las fronteras de naciones de todo el mundo.
Por más trágicas que sean estas crisis fronterizas internacionales, hay más en la historia del ministerio de migración que una mera respuesta emocional a las preocupantes imágenes en la televisión. La migración es identificada por el Papa Benedicto XVI en su encíclica En Caridad y Verdad como un “fenómeno social de proporciones históricas”. Además, el Papa Francisco, en Sobre la fraternidad y la amistad social, señala que la migración “desempeñará un papel fundamental en el futuro de nuestro mundo”.
Este libro es una invitación para que todas las personas reconozcan, comprendan y aprecien la migración no como un problema a resolver, sino como una oportunidad para considerar todos los aspectos de nuestras relaciones con los migrantes, los trabajadores internacionales, los emigrantes, los inmigrantes y sus familias. Si sólo consideramos los problemas, desafíos y tragedias de la migración tal como se ven en las fronteras internacionales, nuestros actos de caridad y compasión no serán suficientes. El ministerio de migración comienza cuando reconocemos a los migrantes como familiares, vecinos, compañeros de trabajo, amigos y creyentes.

Time for a Road Trip
In June, the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network along with the Loyola University of Chicago, Institute for Pastoral Studies will present a one-week training for people engaged in ministry with Migrant Farmworkers, “Vayan y Den Fruto”. I am in Chicago today for meetings preparing for the training program. This will be the first opportunity for me to present the theme of my forthcoming book, “Walk with my People: A Life in Migration Ministry.” I had the intention to have my book ready for publication before our conference in June, but for the rest of the month of April, I will be visiting farmworkers and farmworker ministers with whom I worked when I was director for Campesino Ministry in Fresno. It is a necessary step for arriving at the final edit and translation of the book.
It has been a while since I have been on the road. My plan is to be on the road into May. It will be time to live up to the name, Padre Migrante. Since my book will hopefully be available by the end of the summer. I am considering dividing it into blog posts for the rest of this month. There will be many themes in the book that may be familiar with previous blogs, because the over six hundred blogs done for Padre Migrante were a good resource of material that is part of “Walk with My People”. Migration Ministry
Does Not Begin at the Border
Every day on news channels across the United States, there are images of refugees and asylum seekers at crossings on the United States and Mexico border. The images portray desperate people fleeing some crisis in their own nation, in their own lives. It may be wars, criminal activity, terrorism, natural disaster, or desperate poverty that move people to decide to leave their country of origin. Many come from countries with governments failing to provide security, justice, liberty, education, health care, and economic stability. The overwhelming image of migration depicts masses of people at a border, not only in America, but at the borders of nations around the world.
As tragic as these international border crises are, there is more to the story of migration ministry than merely an emotional response to troubling border images on television. Migration is identified by Pope Benedict XVI in his encyclical In Charity and Truth as a “social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions.”[1] Additionally, Pope Francis, in On Fraternity and Social Friendship notes that migration “will play a pivotal role in the future of our world.”[2]
This book is an invitation for all people to recognize, understand, and appreciate migration not as a problem to solve, but as an opportunity to consider all aspects of our relationships with migrants, international workers, emigrants, immigrants, and their families. If we only consider the problems, challenges, and tragedies of migration as seen at international borders, our acts of charity and compassion will not be enough. Migration ministry begins when we recognize migrants as family, neighbor, coworker, friend, and believer.
