The New Evangelization / La Nueva Evangelización

La Nueva Evangelización – Papa Juan Pablo II, Papa Benedicto XVI y Papa Francisco:
Consideremos la evangelización hoy. El Concilio Vaticano II y el Papa Pablo VI hablaron de la evangelización como el mensaje de Jesús para las personas que buscan a Dios y la fe. Después del Concilio Vaticano y de la Evangelii Nuntiandi, hubo un movimiento para restaurar la antigua práctica del “catecumenado” para la iniciación de los adultos a la fe católica. El Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para adultos fue aprobado oficialmente por los Obispos de los Estados Unidos en 1988.
El primer llamado papal a una “nueva evangelización” fue el del Papa Juan Pablo II en 1983, en su discurso ante el CELAM (Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano),
“La evangelización tomará su mayor energía si es un compromiso, no para re-evangelizar, sino para una nueva evangelización, nueva en su ardor, métodos, y expresión”
Hubo mucha creatividad en la preparación de los adultos conversos desde la época del Concilio Vaticano hasta la década de 1990. Esa creatividad también fue parte del desarrollo de catequistas y teólogos laicos profesionales, y las universidades católicas ofrecían títulos en educación religiosa, teología y la Escritura. La profesionalización de la catequesis tuvo muchos efectos positivos, pero en muchos lugares la evangelización se volvió menos personal y pastoral.
El Papa Benedicto XVI advirtió contra el intento de hacer proselitismo en lugar de evangelizar en una homilía ante la Conferencia Episcopal de América Latina (CELAM) en 2007:
“La Iglesia no hace proselitismo. Crece mucho más por “atracción”.
El Papa Francisco reconoció que la preocupación por los pobres debe incluir el cuidado espiritual y la celebración de los sacramentos. Evangelii Gaudium (2013).
- Puesto que esta Exhortación se dirige a los miembros de la Iglesia católica quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. La opción preferencial por los pobres debe traducirse principalmente en una atención religiosa privilegiada y prioritaria.

New Evangelization — Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis:
Consider evangelization today. The Second Vatican Council and Pope Paul VI spoke about evangelization as the message of Jesus for people in search of God and faith. After the Vatican Council and Evangelii Nuntiandi there was a movement to restore the ancient practice of the “catechumenate” for the initiation of adults to the Catholic faith. The Rite of Christian Initiation for adults was officially approved by the Bishops of the United States in 1988.
The first papal call for a “new evangelization” was by Pope John Paul II in 1983, in his address to CELAM (Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano),
“Evangelization will gain its full energy if it is a commitment, not to re-evangelize but to a New Evangelization, new in its ardor, methods and expression.”
There was a lot of creativity in preparation of adult converts from the time of the Vatican Council well into the 1990’s. That creativity was also a part of the development of professional lay catechists and theologians, with Catholic Universities offering degrees in religious education, theology and Scripture. The professionalization of catechesis had many positive effects, but in many places, evangelization became less personal and less pastoral.
Pope Benedict XVI warned against seeking to proselytize rather than to evangelize in a homily delivered to the Episcopal Conference of the Latin America (CELAM) in 2007:
“The Church does not engage in proselytism. Instead, she grows by “attraction”.
Pope Francis recognized that concern for the poor needs to include spiritual care and celebration of the sacraments. Evangelii Gaudium (2013).
- Since this Exhortation is addressed to members of the Catholic Church, I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God, and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith. Our preferential option for the poor must mainly translate into a privileged and preferential religious care.
