Hoy, CMFN ofrece el cuarto de cinco talleres de capacitación para líderes en la pastoral para campesinos migrantes en Yuma, Arizona. Es la primera sesión en la que asistiré en la presentación. El tema es “Acompañamiento”. Me siento cómodo con este tema, especialmente desde que me lo dijo cuando comencé a trabajar en el ministerio hispano. Mi mentor en este ministerio dijo: “Si no caminas con mi gente, no te molestes en aprender español”. Más importante que la teología, la ley y la oración, si uno quiere cuidar del campesino migrante, tiene que entrar en sus vidas y caminar con ellos.
Nunca seré un buen cosechador, pero para caminar mejor con los campesinos, pasé un verano recogiendo cerezas y otras frutas. Me fue bien con las cerezas, pero las peras, las uvas y las naranjas presentaron otros desafíos. Los días que pasé recogiendo cerezas, viví en campos de inmigrantes. Trabajé con una familia diferente cada día. Mis cajas de cerezas fueron acreditadas a la familia con la que trabajaba cada día. Entré al ritmo de la cosecha de cerezas. Mientras pescamos cerezas, escuché a los trabajadores. A medida que mejoré mi técnica, reconocí la belleza en la cosecha que solo pude aprender acompañando a los migrantes. Durante los tiempos de inactividad, aprendí juegos que nunca había jugado. Los trabajadores tomaron con entusiasmo las monedas que perdí.
Las comidas se compartían con otros trabajadores. La comida era buena, ya que el responsable de la cocina compraba después de nuestro trabajo productos frescos y carnes a la venta. Todos tenía turno para cocinar, incluido el Padre.
Los primeros días en el huerto fui una rareza. Algunos preguntaban quién era el estadounidense que trabajaba con ellos. Cuando mis amigos dijeron que era sacerdote, algunos no lo creyeron. A un hombre le preocupaba que yo pudiera ser “la Migra”. Desde ese verano es una gran alegría cuando alguien con quien trabajé me presenta como “el Padre que trabajó con nosotros en el campo”. Después de una semana en el campo, la gente respondió de manera diferente.
Quizás no se tenga la oportunidad de pasar un verano trabajando en el campo, pero para entender al inmigrante el acompañamiento es fundamental. Cuando acompañamos a los migrantes, permitimos que el migrante nos afecte y es posible que se sientan más como en casa en nuestras comunidades. Paz esté con ustedes.

Today, CMFN is offering its fourth of five training workshops for leaders in pastoral care for migrant farmworkers in Yuma, Arizona. It is the first session that I will be assisting in the presentation. The theme is “Accompaniment”. I am comfortable with this theme, especially since I was told when I began working in Hispanic ministry. My mentor in this ministry said, “If you do not walk with my people, do not bother learning Spanish.” More important than theology, law and prayer, if one wants to care for the migrant farm worker, one must enter their lives and walk with them.
I will never be a good harvest worker, but in order to better walk with farm workers, I spent one summer picking cherries and other fruit. I did okay with the cherries, but pears, grapes and oranges presented other challenges. The days that I spent picking cherries, I lived in migrant camps. I worked with a different family each day. My boxes of cherries were credited to the family whom I worked with each day. I entered the rhythm of the cherry harvest. While we picked cherries, I listened to the workers. As I improved my technique, I recognized beauty in the harvest that I could only learn accompanying migrants. During the down times, I learned games that I never played before. The workers eagerly took the quarters that I lost.
The meals were shared with other workers. The food was very good, as the one’s responsible for cooking shopped after our work for fresh produce and meats on sale. Everyone took their turns at cooking, including the Padre.
The first few days in the orchard, I was an oddity. People asked who the American working with them was. When my friends said that I was a priest, some did not believe it. One man worried that I might be ICE, or as many say, “la Migra”. Since that summer it is quite a joy when someone with whom I worked introduces me as the Padre who worked with us in the fields. After a week in the fields, people responded differently.
One may not have the chance to spend a summer working in the fields, but to understand the immigrant, accompaniment is essential. When we accompany migrants, we allow the migrant to affect us and they may feel more at home in our communities. Peace.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
