Ministerio Rural 1908

Rural Ministry 1908

A week ago, I wrote about the chapel car, Santa Teresita serving the area of Fresno, CA. Before the chapel car, there was a precedent ministry out of chapel rail cars operated by Redemptorists. Yesterday in our Redemptorist Memorabilia had a story about the Chapel Car Apostolate. Here is the story.

October 11, 1908, The Redemptorist “Chapel Car” Apostolate began. There were three cars: St. Anthony, St. Paul, and St. Peter. They were operated by the Church Extension Society in remote rural districts. Rev. Walter Polk was the first Redemptorist from the St. Louis Province to work in this special field, he had charge of the St. Anthony in Mississippi. In 1909, he began working out of Portland, OR. Several Redemptorists managed the St. Anthony and St. Peter until 1913. The St. Paul, operated for fourteen months (1916-1918) principally in Louisiana with confreres from the New Orleans community. The St. Anthony, with Fr. Polk in charge, was exhibited at the Exposition in Seattle in 1909

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
