Padre Migrante: “Proclaiming the Kingdom of God” – “Proclamando el Reino de Dios”
El Papa Francisco publicó en La Alegría del Evangelio, “Quiero expresar con dolor que la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual. La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe; necesitan a Dios y no podemos dejar de ofrecerles su amistad, su bendición, su Palabra, la celebración de los Sacramentos y la propuesta de un camino de crecimiento y de maduración en la fe. (EG. 200)
Ayer hablé del obispo John Steinbock. Me pidió servir como director del ministerio campesino por mi compromiso al pueblo migrante, más que por agendas y programas para la gente. El obispo escribió su preocupación para el cuidado espiritual de los pobres cuatro años antes de La Alegría del Evangelio, en una plática con los sacerdotes de Fresno en enero 2010. No sabíamos en ese momento que su discurso sería su último discurso a todos los sacerdotes. Poco después de la convocatoria, el obispo Steinbock anunció que se estaba muriendo de cáncer.

Jesús se encontraba principalmente entre los pobres, los enfermos, los cojos, los afligidos, los oprimidos, los marginados, los leprosos, los cobradores de impuestos y los despreciados por la alta sociedad. A ellos especialmente Jesús les proclamaba el Reino y el amor de Dios. ¿Quiénes son estas personas en nuestra sociedad y en nuestras parroquias? Son los pobres, las familias desamparadas, los trabajadores agrícolas y sus familias, los migrantes, los indocumentados, los enfermos, los prisioneros. La gran mayoría de estas personas solo asisten a misa de vez en cuando.
Estas reflexiones hablan de los que viven en el margen de la Iglesia, en carros, en campos de trabajo, en grupos aislados de casas, y en granjas y lecherías a través de la diócesis sin el lujo del transporte y sin estabilidad en sus vidas. Debemos ayudar pastoralmente, especialmente a aquellos que Nuestro Señor ama de una manera especial. Para ellos es el Reino de Dios.

Esta carta pastoral del obispo Steinbock al clero de la diócesis de Fresno captura la relación de Jesús con las personas marginadas. Los pobres incluyen a los no capaces de participar regularmente en nuestras misas. Doy gracias de tener la oportunidad de trabajar bajo del Obispo Steinbock. Bajo de él, hablamos del ministerio extraordinario migrante. Teníamos que extender la obra de la Iglesia a gente en condiciones extraordinarios.

Pope Francis published in The Joy of the Gospel, “I want to say, with regret, that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care. The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith; they need God and we must not fail to offer them his friendship, his blessing, his word, the celebration of the sacraments and a journey of growth and maturity in the faith.” (EG. 200)
Yesterday, I wrote about Bishop John Steinbock. He asked me to serve as director of the campesino ministry because of my commitment to the migrant people, rather than because of agendas and programs for the people. The bishop wrote his concern for the spiritual care of the poor four years before The Joy of the Gospel, in a talk with Fresno priests in January 2010. We did not know at the time that his address would be his last address to the priests. Shortly after the convocation, Bishop Steinbock announced that he was dying of cancer.

Jesus was found mostly amongst the poor, the sick, the lame, the suffering, the oppressed, the marginalized, the leper, tax collectors, those looked down upon and despised by the upper class. It was to these especially that He proclaimed the Kingdom of God, and manifested God’s love. Who are these people in our present society, and those within our parishes? They are the poor, the homeless families, the farm workers and their families, the migrant, the undocumented, the sick, the imprisoned. The vast majority of these people rarely come to Mass.
These reflections are speaking of those that live on the margin of the Church, living in cars, in labor camps, in isolated clusters of homes, and those that work on the farms and dairies found throughout our diocese, so often without the luxury of transportation and of living a normal scheduled life. We should be pastoral, especially to those that our Lord loves in a special way. It is just such as these that the Kingdom of God is comprised.

This pastoral letter from Bishop Steinbock to the clergy of the Diocese of Fresno captures Jesus’ relationship with underserved people. The poor include those unable to participate regularly in our Masses. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work under Bishop Steinbock. Under him, we talk about the extraordinary migrant ministry. We had to extend the work of the Church to people in extraordinary conditions.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
