“Llamados a evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”
El Capítulo General Redentorista de 1985 identificó a los misioneros redentoristas que son, “llamados a evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Llamaba al misionero a recordar a Jesús diciendo: “Tuve hambre y me diste de comer, tuve sed y me diste de beber, forastero y me acogiste, desnudo y me vestiste, enfermo y me cuidaste, en prisión y me visitaste.”(Mt. 25: 35-6) Debemos ver a Jesús en los pobres y marginados de la sociedad. Si Jesús tiene hambre, sed, extraño, desnudo, enfermo y en la cárcel, los que sirven en el ministerio de la Iglesia necesitan la humildad para permitir que los pobres nos evangelicen.
En Casa San Alfonso hicimos un esfuerzo consciente para que los jóvenes nos evangelizaran. Queríamos que reconocieran a Jesús en sus vidas. En su bondad, su dignidad, su curiosidad y su inquietud, nos evangelizaron. Eran jóvenes que necesitaban reconocer a Dios dentro de ellos. Cuanto más pudiéramos apartarnos del camino, Jesús podría tocar sus vidas. Lo mismo sucedió en la misión con los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes en Oregon. Tuvimos que ayudar a los marginados de la Iglesia a reconocer a Cristo en ellos mismos, en sus familias y en sus tradiciones religiosas. Buscamos llevar la gracia del sacramento a los migrantes al margen de la vida de la Iglesia.
Al reflexionar sobre esos ministerios, invito a los lectores a hacer una distinción entre evangelización y catequesis. El Papa Pablo VI afirmó que la evangelización es más que enseñar doctrina, diciendo que “nunca se puede enfatizar lo suficiente el hecho de que la evangelización no consiste solo en la predicación y enseñanza de una doctrina”. (EN 47) El Papa Juan Pablo II elaboró este concepto en un discurso al CELAM (la Conferencia Episcopal de América Latina) en 1983, llamó a una Nueva Evangelización: “La evangelización ganará toda su energía si es un compromiso, no para re-evangelizar, pero a una Nueva Evangelización, nueva en su ardor, métodos y expresión”. Pidió a la Iglesia que reconociera las circunstancias cambiantes de las personas a quienes servimos. El mensaje del evangelio es dinámico. La evangelización no es estática. Cuando hay circunstancias que necesitan una Nueva Evangelización, son necesarios nuevos métodos. Los “nuevos métodos” en la evangelización no condenan los métodos de catequesis del pasado, sino que llaman a las personas a estar abiertas a la realidad cambiante del Pueblo de Dios.
Sacerdotes, religiosos y catequistas están llamados a servir, pero con humildad necesitamos ver el rostro de Jesús en los marginados del mundo. Necesitamos dejar que él nos evangelice. A menudo, en la administración ordinaria de las parroquias, hay mucho que hacer para ministrar a aquellos que participan activamente en nuestros programas parroquiales. No es cómodo llamar la atención sobre aquellos que no se sientan bienvenidos en nuestras comunidades. Queremos creer que “todos son bienvenidos” en nuestras parroquias, pero demasiadas personas no se sienten bienvenidas. Es incómodo cuando el Papa Francisco nos dice que “la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. Nuestro cuidado ordinario por el pueblo de Dios necesita ver a Jesús en los pobres, si “todos son bienvenidos” en nuestras parroquias.

The Redemptorist General Chapter in 1985 identified the Redemptorist missionary as one “called to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” It called on the missionary to remember Jesus saying: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” (Mt. 25:35-6) We are to see Jesus in the poor and the marginalized of society. If Jesus is hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, ill and in prison, those serving in ministry in the Church need humility to allow the poor to evangelize us.
At Casa San Alfonso, we made a conscious effort to let young people evangelize us. We wanted them to recognize Jesus in their lives. In their goodness, their dignity, their curiosity and their desire to form relationships, they evangelized us. They were young people needing to recognize God within them. The more that we could get out of the way, Jesus could touch their lives. The same was true in the mission with migrant farm workers in Oregon. We had to help those on the margins of the Church recognize Christ in themselves, in their families and in their religious traditions. We sought to bring the grace of sacrament to migrants on the fringes of Church life.
As I reflect on those ministries, I invite readers to make a distinction between evangelization and catechization. Pope Paul VI stated that evangelization is more than teaching doctrine saying, “one can never sufficiently stress the fact that evangelization does not consist only of the preaching and teaching of a doctrine.” (EN 47) Pope John Paul II elaborated on this concept in an address to CELAM (the Episcopal Conference of Latin America) in 1983, he called for a New Evangelization: “Evangelization will gain its full energy if it is a commitment, not to re-evangelize but to a New Evangelization, new in its ardor, methods and expression.” He called on the Church to recognize the changing circumstances of the people whom we serve. The message of the gospel is dynamic. Evangelization is not static. When there are circumstances that need a New Evangelization, new methods are necessary. “New methods” in evangelization do not condemn past methods of catechesis, but rather call on people to be open to the changing reality of the People of God.
Priests, religious workers and catechists are called to serve, but in humility we need to see the face of Jesus in the marginalized of the world. We need to let him evangelize us. Often in the ordinary administration of parishes, there is much to do in ministering to those actively engaged in our parish programs. Calling attention to those who may not feel welcome in our communities is not comfortable. We want to believe that “all are welcome” in our parishes, but too many people do not feel welcome. It is uncomfortable when Pope Francis tells us, “that the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.” Our ordinary care for the people of God needs to see Jesus in the poor, if “all are welcome” in our parishes.
