Padre Migrante, after one year: Gracias al Señor
Gracias al Señor
Hace un año, los Redentoristas comenzaron el sitio web Padre Migrante. Ha sido un privilegio para mí administrar este sitio. Doy gracias cada día por los migrantes e inmigrantes que me han recibido en sus vidas, evangelizándome como dice nuestra congregación, “estamos llamados a evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. En una época en la que muchos temen y malinterpretan la migración, he tenido la suerte de caminar con personas que demuestran esperanza, amor y fe en las situaciones más difíciles.
El 1 de agosto tuve la suerte de celebrar el trigésimo aniversario de la fundación de Casa San Alfonso en Denver. La Casa fue una casa de acogida para los jóvenes del centro de la ciudad de 1991 a 1996. Celebramos la misa en la iglesia de San José por la mañana y nos reunimos en el “Sunken Garden Park” por el resto del día. Muchos de los jóvenes de la Casa y los Padrinos (los adultos voluntarios en el ministerio) vinieron para renovar amistades y compartir sus historias. Recordamos cinco años de una iniciativa misionera que impactó nuestras vidas de maneras maravillosas. Esos años les dieron a los jóvenes migrantes la oportunidad de crecer en el respeto por sí mismos, el respeto por los demás, la responsabilidad en la vida y la fe. En esos años, comencé a caminar con personas de fe en los mejores y más difíciles momentos.
Mi propia vida cambió en esos años. No solo aprendí español y comencé a servir en el ministerio hispano. Descubrí el significado del P. Enrique López desafía como solía decir: “Si no caminas con mi gente, no te molestes en aprender español”. Descubrí la esperanza, el amor y la fe en la comunidad migrante. Sé que cuando hablo de las tres virtudes cardinales, lo hago en un orden diferente al que se enuncian tradicionalmente: fe, esperanza y caridad. Lo hago para llamar la atención sobre el orden que se vive al trabajar con los pobres, Esperanza, Amor y Fe.
La gente cruza ríos, desiertos, montañas y océanos por desesperación. Lo hacen con la esperanza de llegar a su tierra prometida. Abraham fue el migrante modelo cuando partió de su hogar arameo con la esperanza de llegar a la Tierra Prometida. Los migrantes de hoy partieron con la misma esperanza que motivó a nuestros antepasados en la fe. Que las personas de fe nunca pierdan la esperanza, el amor y la fe mientras buscamos el Reino de Dios. Gracias al Señor.

One year ago, Redemptorists began the website, Padre Migrante. It has been my privilege to administer this site. I give thanks each day for the migrants and immigrants who have received me into their lives, evangelizing me as our congregation says, “we are called to evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” In a time when migration is feared and misunderstood by many, I have been blessed to walk with people who demonstrate hope, love and faith in the most difficult of situations.
On August 1, I was blessed to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of Casa San Alfonso in Denver. The Casa was a house of welcome for inner-city youth from 1991-1996. We celebrated Mass at St. Joseph´s Church in the morning and gathered at “Sunken Garden park” for the rest of the day. Many of the youth from the Casa and the Padrinos (the adult volunteers in the ministry) came to renew friendships and to share their stories. We remembered five years of a missionary initiative that impacted our lives in marvelous ways. Those years gave migrant young people an opportunity to grow in self-respect, respect for others, responsibility in life and faith. In those years, I began walking with people of faith in the best and the most difficult times.
My own life changed in those years. I not only learned Spanish and began serving in Hispanic ministry. I discovered the meaning of Fr. Enrique López challenge as he often said, “If you do not walk with my people, don’t bother learning Spanish.” I discovered hope, love and faith in the migrant community. I know that when I speak of the three cardinal virtues, I do so in a different order than they are traditionally stated, faith, hope and charity. I do so to call attention to the order experienced when working with the poor, Hope, Love and Faith.
People cross rivers, deserts, mountains and oceans out of desperation. They do so in hope of reaching their promised land. Abraham was the model migrant as he set out from his Aramaean home with the hope of reaching the Promised Land. The migrants of today set out with the same hope that motivated our ancestors in faith. May people of faith never lose Hope, Love and Faith as we seek the Kingdom of God. Gracias al Señor.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
