Avanza
Seamos misioneros como líderes de la iglesia. Los evangelistas Mateo, Marcos, Lucas y Juan presentan sus recuerdos de la vida, enseñanza, milagros, pasión y resurrección de Jesús. A menudo conectaron su historia con la historia de la revelación de Dios a las escrituras y la tradición judía. Jesús vino al mundo, no para “condenar al mundo, sino para que se salve el mundo gracias a él”. (Jn. 3:17) Cuando Jesús concluyó su tiempo con los Apóstoles, los envió a evangelizar el mundo. Él dijo: “Ve”. Fue un mensaje lleno de compromiso con Su Palabra y lleno de esperanza.
Necesitamos apreciar el pasado, incluyendo lo bueno y lo difícil, pero el verdadero ministerio no usa nuestro pasado como una excusa para no avanzar en la evangelización del mundo. Celebramos los avances realizados por la iglesia en los 2000 años desde la época de Jesús, y humildemente reconocemos los pasos en falso de las personas de fe a lo largo de los años. Sin embargo, no podemos tratar de recuperar momentos de los buenos tiempos de la iglesia, ni detenernos tanto en las decepciones y los escándalos que dejemos de avanzar. “Ve, hagan discípulos de todas las naciones” sigue siendo la misión de la Iglesia.
Me encanta contar historias de momentos de gracia, cuando personas con las que he caminado viven intensos momentos de fe. También reconozco a las personas que viven sin la ayuda necesaria para reconocer los momentos de gracia. Demasiadas personas mencionan los obstáculos para que sus hijos reciban los sacramentos como para simplemente mirar hacia otro lado sin desafiar las viejas ideas y prácticas que niegan el bautismo, la eucaristía y la confirmación a los pobres. Afortunadamente, he experimentado oportunidades en el ministerio cuando pude responder en el momento.
Mi consejo favorito provino de un obispo no conocido como progresista o liberal. Fue cuando reconoció las dificultades que tienen los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes para participar en programas de preparación para el sacramento de la Confirmación. Él dijo: “Solo tienes el tiempo que Dios te da, tú les enseñas y yo te los confirmo”. A partir de ese momento, consideré que la recepción de la gracia del sacramento se basa en la fe del peticionario, más que en comprender la compleja teológica de la gracia.
Cuando trabajamos con migrantes e inmigrantes, y reconocemos que el momento con ellos es limitado, simplemente debemos hacer lo mejor que podamos en el tiempo que tenemos. En todo lo que haces por y con los migrantes, lo haces “en el tiempo que Dios te da”.

Move forward
Let us be missionary as church leaders. The evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, present their memories of Jesus’ life, teaching, miracles, passion and resurrection. They often connected their story to the history of God’s revelation to the Jewish scriptures and tradition. Jesus came into the world, not to “condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (Jn. 3:17) As Jesus concluded his time with the Apostles, he sent them out to evangelize the world. He said, “Go”. It was a message filled with commitment to His Word and hopeful.
We need to appreciate our past, including the good and the difficult, but real ministry does not use our past as an excuse to not move forward to evangelize the world. We celebrate advances made by the church in the 2000 years since the time of Jesus, and we humbly recognize the missteps of people of faith over the years. Yet, we cannot seek to recapture moments of the church’s good times, nor dwell so much on disappointments and scandals that we fail to move forward. “Go, make disciples of all nations” is still the mission of the Church.
I love to tell stories of moments of grace, when people with whom I have walked experience intense moments of faith. I also recognize people who live without the help needed to recognize moments of grace. Too many people recount obstacles to having their children receive sacraments to simply look away without challenging old ideas and practices that deny Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation to the poor. Fortunately, I have experienced opportunities in ministry when I could respond in the moment.
My favorite advice came from a bishop not known as progressive or liberal. It was when he recognized the difficulties migrant farmworkers have in participating in programs of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. He said, “You only have the time that God gives you, you teach them and I will confirm them.” From that moment on, I considered the reception of the grace of sacrament is based on the faith of the petitioner, rather than understanding the complex theological nature of grace.
When working with migrants and immigrants, and recognizing that the moment with them is limited, we need to simply do the best we can in the time that we have. In everything you do for and with migrants, you do it “in the time that God gives you.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
