Motivación para crear un ministerio migrante efectivo
La migración ha sido parte de la vida humana desde que Adán y Eva abandonaron el Jardín del Edén. La historia de la creación en las Escrituras dice que Dios los entregó Adán y Eva para crear y multiplicarse. No importa como los científicos y estudiantes de historia consideran que la historia humana, desde el comienzo de la vida humana, ciertamente se ha multiplicado. Hemos creado formas de cuidar, educar, organizar y evangelizar la vida humana. Desde la época de Caín y Abel, la relación entre hermanos ha sido complicada por nuestros defectos en la naturaleza humana. La tensión entre el bien y el mal ha estado con la humanidad desde nuestros comienzos.
Durante 50 años de sacerdocio, he trabajado en diversos ministerios. Este año mi vida se ha ‘tranquilizado’ en muchos sentidos. Hace algunos años, mi Superior Provincial Redentorista me preguntó: “¿Qué esperas hacer en tus últimos años de ministerio?” Es una pregunta, no contestada en el momento en que uno cumple cierta edad. Sin embargo, hace que uno piense en el propósito de la vida. Es un tiempo para recordar el pasado, y elijo recordar lo bueno que he experimentado en la vida. En los últimos dos años, he viajado más que la mayoría de mis primeros años en el ministerio. He visitado a muchos amigos y contactos hechos en mis primeros 45 años de ministerio.
He renovado relaciones con personas de mi juventud y de mis años de ministerio. Algunas de esas personas eran compañeros de estudio, competencia atlética, compañeros de trabajo, personas a las que serví y quienes me cuidaron. He caminado con migrantes e inmigrantes en ambos lados de la frontera México/Estados Unidos. He caminado con personas en la dificultad, pero también en la alegría de construir una vida mejor para ellos y sus hijos. Y he caminado con personas a las que les cuesta aceptar cambios y extraños en sus vidas.
Para inspiración y motivación hoy, mientras escucho toda la Escritura, es importante leer la enseñanza de los santos, los doctores de la Iglesia, los teólogos y los líderes religiosos de nuestro tiempo. Escucho a los pobres, a los marginados, a los castigados por la sociedad y los religiosos. líderes para descubrir la presencia divina a nuestro alrededor. Lo más inspirador para mí es la última cena de Jesús y la misión que Jesús dio a sus discípulos. “Ámense unos a los otros como yo los he amado”.

Motivation to create effective migrant ministry
Migration has been a part of human life since Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden. The story of creation in Scripture says that God gave them to each other to create and multiply. However, scientists and students of history consider human history, from the beginning of human life, we have certainly multiplied. We have created ways of caring for, educating, organizing and evangelizing human life. From the time of Cain and Abel, relationship between brothers has been complicated by our flaws in human nature. The tension between good and evil has been with humanity since our beginning.
As a priest for 50 years, I have worked in diverse ministries. This year my life has ‘calmed down’ in many ways. A few years ago, my Redemptorist Provincial Superior asked me, “What do you hope to do in your senior years of ministry?” It is a question, not answered the moment one turns a certain age. Yet, it gets one thinking about our purpose in life. It is a time to remember the past, and I choose to remember the good that I have experienced in life. In the past couple years, I have traveled more than most of my early years in ministry. I have visited many friends and contacts made in my first 45 years of ministry.
I have renewed relationships with people from my childhood and from my years of ministry. Some of those people were companions in study, athletic competition, work associates, people whom I served and those who cared for me. I have walked with migrants and immigrants on both sides of the Mexico/United States border. I have walked with people in hardship, but also in the joy of building a better life for themselves and their children. And I have walked with people who find it difficult to accept change and strangers into their lives.
For inspiration and motivation today, while listening to all of Scripture, it is important to read the teaching of saints, doctors of the Church, theologians, and religious leaders of our time. I listen to the poor, the outcast, those chastised by society and religious leaders to discover the divine presence around us. Most inspiring to me is the last supper of Jesus and the mission Jesus gave to his disciples. “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
