Ministerio del Momento
Una de las mayores bendiciones de Casa San Alfonso fue la novedad de nuestro experimento en la pastoral juvenil. La idea de tener una comunidad religiosa simplemente abierta a ofrecer hospitalidad a los jóvenes de uno de los barrios más pobres de Denver intrigó a la gente, pero luego surgió la pregunta: “¿Qué van a hacer por los jóvenes?” No teníamos respuesta a la pregunta. Teníamos frijoles en la estufa y tortillas en el refrigerador. Nuestra casa era un lugar seguro para conocer y visitar a otros jóvenes del barrio. Las actividades religiosas se llevaron a cabo en la Iglesia de San José.
Al principio, celebramos cumpleaños, días de santos, tradiciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y Posadas. Era difícil decirles a los demás lo que realmente estábamos logrando en el ministerio, pero los jóvenes vinieron a la casa, solo para pasar el rato con los sacerdotes y el hermano. A veces pueden hablar de extrañar a sus familias en México. A veces, planificamos actividades, retiros y eventos, pero lo más satisfactorio fue el ministerio del momento no planificado.
Un joven fue detenido por la policía y acusado de un delito que no cometió, una mujer estaba deprimida y considerando suicidarse, una persona simplemente quería hablar de su soledad. La gente que venía a la casa quería que alguien los escuchara en el momento. Su dolor y soledad necesitaban atención personal en el momento.
Algunos críticos dijeron que los jóvenes se aprovecharon de nosotros, pero creímos que estaba bien si era cierto. También sabíamos que aprovechábamos para que los jóvenes nos enseñaran sobre la vida en la inseguridad de la pobreza y la inmigración. Nuestros primeros dos meses en Casa San Alfonso estuvieron ocupados con celebraciones culturales y religiosas. Las fiestas de noviembre y diciembre dieron la bienvenida a muchos jóvenes a nuestro ministerio distintivo como una comunidad acogedora para los jóvenes.

Ministry of the Moment
One of the greatest blessings of Casa San Alfonso was the newness of our experiment in youth ministry. The idea of having a religious community simply open to offering hospitality to young people from one of the poorest barrios of Denver intrigued people, but then came the question, “What are you going to do for the youth?” We had no answer to the question. We had beans on the stove and tortillas in the refrigerator. Our house was a safe place to meet and visit with other young people from the barrio. Religious activities took place at St. Joseph’s Church.
In the beginning, we celebrated birthdays, saints’ days, traditions of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Posadas. It was difficult telling others what we were actually accomplishing in ministry, but young people came to the house, just to hang out with the priests and brother. At times they might talk about missing their families in Mexico. At times, we planned activities, retreats and events, but most fulfilling was ministry of the unplanned moment.
A young man was stopped by police and charged with an offense that he did not commit, a woman was depressed and considering suicide, a person simply wanted to share his loneliness. People who came to the house wanted someone to listen to them in the moment. Their pain and loneliness needed personal attention in the moment.
Some critics said that the young people took advantage of us, but we believed that was okay if true. We also knew that we were taking advantage of letting the young people teach us about life in the insecurity of poverty and immigration. Our first two months at Casa San Alfonso were occupied with cultural and religious celebrations. The fiestas of November and December welcomed many young people to our distinct ministry as a welcoming community for youth.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
