Cuando entré al ministerio hispano en 1991, trabajé principalmente con inmigrantes mexicanos. En nuestra casa de jóvenes en Denver, trabajamos principalmente con jóvenes que entraron a los Estados Unidos por trabajo, unificación familiar con miembros de la familia que ya estaban en los Estados Unidos y por una oportunidad de educación. Algunos simplemente vinieron en busca de aventuras. También trabajamos con mexicoamericanos de segunda y tercera generación. Ocasionalmente, había jóvenes que buscaban seguridad contra el crimen organizado y las pandillas.
El año pasado, mientras visitaba albergues para migrantes en México, la mayoría de los migrantes eran de América Central y del Sur. Había algunos de Haití, Cuba y países asiáticos. La motivación abrumadora para dejar sus países fue el miedo, la violencia, las pandillas y cierta persecución política y religiosa. Una respuesta común fue, “tú conoces la situación”. Muchos tenían heridas para mostrar de los abusos que sobrevivieron.
Muchos hablaron de tener negocios exitosos y niveles de educación más altos que los refugiados que conocí en la década de 1990. Muchos recibieron amenazas a sus negocios o a sus familiares. Muchas de las víctimas de la violencia venían con toda su familia. Mientras viajaban a la frontera, algunas personas se hicieron amigos dentro de sus grupos para protegerse de las pandillas en el camino.
En varios de los albergues que visitamos, los migrantes asumieron la responsabilidad de limpiar, cocinar y mantener los albergues mientras estaban en el albergue. Dentro de los refugios, las personas estaban seguros y respetaban las luchas de otros que buscaban asilo. El viaje de dejar su país y cruzar fronteras fue peligroso, por lo que aquellos que encontraron refugio a lo largo de su viaje mostraron su gratitud.

When I entered Hispanic ministry in 1991, I worked primarily with Mexican immigrants. At our youth house in Denver, we worked mostly with young Mexican men who came to the United States for work, family unification with family members already in the United States and for an opportunity for education. Some simply came for adventure. We also worked with second and third generation Mexican Americans. There occasionally were young people seeking safety from organized crime and gangs.
Last year, while visiting migrant shelters in Mexico, most of the migrants were from Central and South America. There were also people from Haiti, Cuba and some Asian refugees. The overwhelming motivation for leaving their countries was fear, violence, gangs and some political and religious persecution. A common response was, “you know the situation.” Many had wounds to show from abuses that they survived.
Many spoke of having successful businesses and levels of education higher than refugees I knew from the 1990’s. Many received threats to their businesses or to family members. Many of the victims of violence came with their entire family. As they traveled to the border, some people made friends within their groups for their protection from the gangs along the way.
At several of the shelters that we visited people took on the responsibility cleaning, cooking and maintaining the shelters while in the shelter. Within the shelters, people were safe and respected the struggles of others who were seeking asylum. The journey of leaving their country and crossing borders was dangerous, so those finding shelter along their journey showed their gratitude.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
