Demos gracias
Esta semana celebramos el Día de Acción de Gracias. Al hacer nuestros preparativos para las reuniones con familiares y amigos, podemos poner al lado nuestros dolores, miedos y ansiedad. Es un momento para ver el bien en todos en nuestras vidas. Los rostros sombríos de la guerra, las crisis y la división todavía aparecen en las noticias, pero es un momento para que honremos y reconozcamos a las personas buenas en nuestras vidas. Ya se están preparando las cenas de Acción de Gracias. Los pavos se están descongelando en todo el país. Muchos viajan para estar con sus seres queridos. Mientras estamos ocupados con todas las actividades de Acción de Gracias, también hacemos una pausa para dar gracias a Dios.
Una de las mayores bendiciones de mi vida es tener cuatro hermanas y dos hermanos. Con la invención de los “mensajes de texto”, nos mantenemos en contacto unos con otros. Algunos ciertos días hay muchos mensajes. Ayer, durante todo el día, hubo mensajes sobre lo que todos traerán para nuestra comida y reunión de Acción de Gracias. Cada uno de nosotros tenemos nuestras cosas favoritas para preparar. Eso incluye comida y quién puede venir y a quién recordaremos, aunque no puedan venir ese día. Planeamos todo lo que podamos hacer afuera, incluida una fogata por la noche.
En la tarde recibimos la noticia del fallecimiento de Fran, una de las amigas más cercanas de nuestra madre. Puede que sea un momento de pérdida, pero lo único que pudimos recordar fue su sonrisa, su amistad con mamá y su alegría, incluso en los momentos difíciles. Ella y mi madre eran de la “mejor generación”. Crecimos en la parroquia de Holy Name en Omaha. Ella era una de las madres fieles que cuidaba de todos los niños del barrio. Teníamos una comunidad especial formada por personas que vivieron los tiempos difíciles de la Depresión, la Segunda Guerra Mundial y todos los cambios, desafíos y alegrías de los últimos 100 años.
El Día de Acción de Gracias es más que un simple día festivo. Los invito a todos a tomarse un tiempo para agradecer a todos aquellos que los ayudaron en la vida.

Let us give thanks
This week, we celebrate Thanksgiving Day. As we make our preparations for gatherings with family and friends may we put aside our hurts, fears, and anxiety. It is a time to see good in everyone in our lives. The grim faces of war, crises and division are still in the news, but it is a time for us to honor and recognize good people in our lives. Thanksgiving dinners are already being prepared. Turkeys are thawing across the country. Many travel to be with loved ones. As we become busy with all of the Thanksgiving activities, we also pause to give thanks to God.
One of the greatest blessings in my life is to have four sisters and two brothers. With the invention of “text messaging”, we keep in touch with each other. Some days, there are many messages. Yesterday, all through the day, there were messages about what everyone is brining for our Thanksgiving meal and gathering. We each have our favorite things to prepare. That includes food and who is able to come and who we will remember even though they cannot come for the day. We plan for whatever we can do outside, including an evening bonfire.
Then, we had news of the passing of Fran, one of the closest friends of our mother. It may be a moment of loss, but all that we could remember was her smile, her friendship with Mom and her joy, even in difficult times. She and my mother were of the “greatest generation.” We grew up in Holy Name parish in Omaha. She was one of the faithful mothers who took care of all of the children of the neighborhood. We had a special community made up of people who lived through the difficult times of the Depression, World War II and all the changes, challenges and joys of the past 100 years.
Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday. I invite all to take time to give thanks to all those who helped you along the way.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
