Hunger and thirst for righteousness / Hambre y sed de justicia

(GE 77)

Hunger and thirst for righteousness

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled”

In 1972, Pope Paul VI said, “If you want peace, work for justice.” His declaration was made in a time when movements for human rights were taking place around the world. There were leaders of human rights, such as Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Cesar Chavez, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Dorothy Day and others inspiring many to work for justice. The Cold War, a nuclear arms race, civil wars around the world and our own nation conflicted over war in Vietnam and civil rights here were the context of the Pope’s message.

Jesus promised that those who hungered and thirst for righteousness would be fulfilled. Consider Pope Francis’ reflection.

Hunger and thirst are intense experiences, since they involve basic needs and our instinct for survival. There are those who desire justice and yearn for righteousness with similar intensity. Jesus says that they will be satisfied, for sooner or later justice will come. We can cooperate to make that possible, even if we may not always see the fruit of our efforts. (GE 77)

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.

Blessed are those who mourn / Felices los que lloran Blessed are the Merciful / Felices los misericodiosos
