Ella dijo: “Soy Santa Reba”. No sabía quien era Santa Reba. La niña dijo: “Ella era mi madrina”. Le pregunté: “¿Era una santa?” Ella dijo: “Sí. Me enseñó a bailar, a hacer galletas y a rezar”.

All Saints Day

I celebrated All Saints Mass in a Catholic grade school and a child gave the best homily that I ever heard for the celebration of All Saints. The third-grade class was responsible for the All Saints Day liturgy for the school. The students dressed up to represent saints. There were thirteen students with the names of saints on each of them. At the time of the homily, I asked them to stand in front of the church and tell me who their saint was. So, the first said, “I am St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscans.” The next student said, “I am Mary, the mother of Jesus.” Then, “I am St. Peter, the first Pope.” Then, “I am St. Joseph, the husband of Mary.” Several others identified their saints and then I came to one little girl. She said, “I am St. Reba.” I did not know of a St. Reba, so I asked who she was. The girl said, “She was my godmother.” I asked, “Was she a saint?” She said, “Yes. She taught me how to dance, how to make cookies and how to pray.” She then said, “She died in August.” The little girl had tear on her cheek when she said, “I miss her.”

Today is the celebration of All Saints. The saints like Francis, Peter, Mary, Joseph and the canonized saints have their feast days, but today is the time to honor the St. Rebas and all of those we recognize as people who witnessed the faith to us in our families and communities. Jesus gave us a great picture of holiness in the Sermon on the Mount.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.

There are many people who may not be recognized by the whole church, but let us remember our “St. Rebas” today. I know several who showed me the way.
