Acerca de la motivación

Cuando visito emigrantes, refugiados y trabajadores migrantes, me gusta preguntarles a las personas qué los motiva o los motivó a dejar su país de origen para buscar un hogar en otra nación. Al principio mi pregunta fue: “¿Por qué dejaste tu país de origen?” Las respuestas variaban de una persona a otra, pero a menudo podían verse fácilmente en experiencias nacionales e internacionales de injusticia, violencia, delincuencia, dificultades económicas y desastres naturales. Pero mientras caminaba con emigrantes, refugiados y trabajadores migrantes, comencé a cambiar ligeramente la pregunta a: “¿Qué te motivó a dejar tu país de origen?”

Por supuesto, los peligros físicos ocuparon muchas respuestas, pero a menudo la cuestión de la motivación inició una reflexión y una respuesta más profundas por parte del emigrante. Algunas personas hablaron de temores, esperanzas y confianza en Dios de que podrían brindar una vida mejor a sus familiares y seres queridos. La motivación fue siempre positiva. Para otros, fue una cuestión que nunca consideraron. En un campamento, después de hablar sobre la motivación durante una homilía, tres hombres quisieron hablar conmigo. Dijeron que querían hacer una “manda”. Juntos decidieron que estaban bebiendo demasiado y que estaban ofendiendo a sus esposas e hijos a pesar de que estaban en México. Querían apoyarse mutuamente para dejar de beber, al menos mientras trabajaban en Estados Unidos.

Decidieron un período de tiempo, prometieron a Dios y entre sí no beber durante la cosecha actual, y oraron conmigo para que Dios les diera la fuerza para completar su “manda”. Si cumplieron su manda o no, no lo sé. Sin embargo, su motivación no fue el miedo, la ley o la disciplina del campo. Su motivación era por su familia y por su propia creencia de que con la ayuda de Dios podrían estar en un mejor camino de vida.

La motivación se presenta de muchas maneras, pero cuando la motivación es una respuesta esperanzadora y vivificante, nuestro mundo es mejor. Las injusticias de la vida que nos rodea persisten, pero somos capaces de hacer el mundo un poco mejor cuando buscamos una motivación positiva.

About Motivation

When visiting emigrants, refugees and migrant workers, I like to ask people what motivates or motivated them to leave their country of origin, to seek a home in another nation. At first my question was: “Why did you leave your home country?” The answers varied from one person to another, but often the responses could be easily seen in national and international experiences of injustice, violence, crime, economic hardship and natural disasters. But as I have walked with emigrants, refugees and migrant workers, I began to slightly change the question to: “What motivated you to leave your country of origin?”

Of course, physical dangers occupied many responses, but often the question of motivation initiated a deeper reflection and response from the emigrant. Some people spoke of fears, hopes and trust in God that they could provide a better life for the family and loved ones. The motivation was consistently positive. For others, it was a question that they never considered. In one camp, after talking about motivation during a homily, three men wanted to talk with me. They said that they wanted to make a “manda” (a pledge). Together they decided that they were drinking too much, and they were offending their wives and children even though they were back in Mexico. They wanted to support one another to stop drinking, at least while they were working in the United States.

They decided on a length of time, promised to God and to each other not to drink through the present harvest, and prayed with me that God would give them the strength to complete their “manda”. Whether they fulfilled their manda or not, I do not know. Yet, their motivation was not fear, law or camp discipline. Their motivation was for their family and for their own belief that with God’s help they could be on a better path of life.

Motivation comes in many ways, but when the motivation is a response that is hopeful and lifegiving, our world is better. The injustices of life around us remain, but we are capable of making the world a little bit better when we seek positive motivation.

Misa del campamento migrante

Una de las mayores alegrías del ministerio campesino es la Misa de campamento. Ya sea en un grupo grande o pequeño, es la alegría de las personas celebrando su bondad y siendo amadas por Dios lo que brilla en la comunidad. No hay mucho entretenimiento disponible en los campamentos.  La Misa es un regalo para el tiempo libre en el campamento. La alegría de la gente en la Misa renueva la dignidad y la fe de obreros migrantes.

Migrant Camp Mass

One of the greatest joys of campesino ministry is the camp Mass. Whether in a large or small group, it is the joy of people celebrating their goodness and being loved by God that shines in the community. There is not a great deal of entertainment available in the camps, so the Mass is a gift for the down time in a camp. The smiles of the people at last night’s Mass recognize the joy of the gospel and sharing in a community of faith.

Fe en los pobres

El Papa Francisco dice: “La inmensa mayoría de los pobres tiene una especial apertura a la fe”. (EG. 200) Tiene toda la razón. Lamentablemente, muchas personas no reconocen la dignidad y la bondad de los pobres. Los pobres tienen un lugar especial en los evangelios. Los ciegos, los sordos, los leprosos, la adúltera, la samaritana, niños y aquellos que carecían del respeto, especialmente de los líderes religiosos, fueron los recipientes de la compasión y el amor de Jesús. La parábola del juicio final honra claramente a los marginados de la sociedad: “Cuando tenía hambre… tenía sed… desnudo… era un extraño…” (Mt. 25, 35ss.) Son la presencia de Jesús entre a nosotros.

No es fácil reconocer a los pobres como lo hizo Jesús. Más importante que la generosidad, la compasión y la misericordia por los pobres es que reconozcamos a Jesús en los pobres. Caminar con personas que carecen de oportunidades, derechos humanos y respeto no es tan difícil como algunos imaginan. Las penurias de los pobres son difíciles, pero caminar con los migrantes, los jóvenes, los pobres y los marginados es inspirador al reconocer su bondad, dignidad y fe. Caminar con los pobres es complicado. El camino no está claro y las cruces y las dificultades pueden ser insoportables, pero cuando los pobres son reconocidos como la persona de Jesús, uno es recompensado con la percepción del infinito amor de Dios.

La fe de los pobres no siempre es evidente. Muchos marginados han perdido la fe y carecen de esperanza. Es el resultado de no recibir la palabra de Dios en el testimonio de las personas de fe. La evangelización de los pobres no se encuentra en los libros, el proselitismo, el servicio psicológico y social. La evangelización se encuentra en el respeto, el amor y la esperanza. Éstas son las claves de la fe.

Faith in the poor

Pope Francis says, “The great majority of the poor have a special openness to the faith.” (EG. 200) He is absolutely correct. Sadly, many people fail to recognize the dignity and goodness of the poor. The poor have a special place in the gospels. The blind, the deaf, the leper, the adulteress, the Samaritan, the child and those lacking respect particularly of religious leaders were the recipients of Jesus’ compassion and love. The parable of the last judgement clearly honored the outcasts of society, “When I was hungry…thirsty…naked…a stranger….” (Mt. 25: 35f) They are the presence of Jesus amongst us.

It is not easy to recognize the poor as Jesus did. More important than generosity, compassion and mercy for the poor is that we recognize Jesus in the poor. Walking with people lacking opportunity, human rights, and respect is not as difficult as some imagine. The hardships of the poor are difficult, but walking with migrants, youth, the poor and the outcast is inspiring when recognizing their goodness, dignity and faith. Walking with the poor is messy. The path is not clear and the crosses and hardships are difficult to endure, but when the poor are recognized as the person of Jesus one is rewarded with insight of God’s infinite love.

The faith of the poor is not always apparent. Many outcasts have given up on faith and lack hope. It is the result of not having the word of God conveyed to them in the love of people of faith. Evangelization for the poor is not found in books, proselytization, psychological and social service. Evangelization thrives on respect, love and hope. These are the keys to faith.

Ministerio Migrante de la Costa Este de Virginia

Esta semana visitaré al equipo del Ministerio Migrante de la Costa Este de Virginia. En febrero de 2020 llegué a esta comunidad para que el P. Mike Imperial podría ir a México a estudiar español. Regresó después de sólo cuatro semanas cuando empezó el COVID. Pasé tres meses aquí y la región me recibió durante el momento difícil que vivió nuestra nación al comienzo de la crisis del COVID. Fue durante una temporada de actividad limitada en las granjas. Los trabajadores agrícolas locales estaban realizando trabajos ocasionales en construcción, jardinería y demás. Los trabajadores temporeros no estaban presentes. Durante la primavera de COVID, el banco de alimentos se volvió esencial y muchos de los que pudieron, ayudaron en la distribución de alimentos.

Esta será la primera vez que lo visite en un momento en que el trabajo estacional está elevado. Las circunstancias de la mano de obra migrante aquí son extraordinarias en comparación con otros lugares donde he trabajado en el pasado. Ha sido un privilegio para mí visitar comunidades de trabajadores migrantes en todo el país y reconocer que hay una virtud esencial para servir a los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes, la flexibilidad es esencial. Cada región del país tiene un ritmo local o quizás es mejor decir tiene varios ritmos ya que cada cultivo tiene sus propios tiempos en los que se necesita mano de obra.

Los voluntarios y profesionales del ministerio de migrantes de hoy intentan satisfacer las extraordinarias necesidades físicas, sociales, médicas y legales de las personas marginadas de la sociedad. Las diócesis y parroquias ofrecen misas ocasionales en los campamentos. Algunas diócesis celebran una Misa para Migrantes anualmente y brindan un día con servicios sociales, legales, médicos y distribución de alimentos y ropa para los trabajadores que están lejos de sus familias como trabajadores migrantes. Las comunidades católicas y otras denominaciones brindan servicios de diversas maneras. Muchas personas mayores, organizaciones comunitarias y grupos de jóvenes participan en actividades de extensión hacia los inmigrantes. Como líderes de la iglesia, animar y alentar ese alcance es una parte importante de nuestro ministerio.

Todos estos son buenos esfuerzos, pero ¿estamos haciendo lo suficiente? El Papa Francisco ha hecho más por los servicios a los migrantes que cualquier líder religioso hoy en día, pero dijo que “la peor discriminación que sufren los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. (EG. 200)

Virginia Eastern Shore Migrant Ministry

I am visiting the Eastern Shore Migrant Ministry team in Onley, VA this week. In February 2020, I came to this community so that Fr. Mike Imperial could go to Mexico to study Spanish. He returned after only four weeks when COVID broke out. I spent three months here, and the region received me during the difficult time our nation had at the beginning of the COVID crisis. It was during a season of limited activity on farms. Local agricultural workers were picking up odd jobs in construction, gardening and such. The seasonal workers were not present. During the COVID spring, the food bank became essential and many of those who could, helped in food distribution.

This will be the first time to visit at a time when seasonal work is at its highest. The circumstances of migrant labor here are a bit unique as compared with other places where I have worked in the past. It has been my privilege to visit migrant worker communities across the country and recognize that among the virtues essential in serving migrant farmworkers, flexibility is essential. Every region of the country has a local rhythm or perhaps it is better to say has several rhythms as each crop has its own times when laborers are needed.

Today’s migrant ministry volunteers and professionals try to meet the extraordinary physical, social, medical and legal needs of people on the fringes of society. Dioceses and parishes offer occasional Masses in camps. Some dioceses hold an annual Migrant Mass and provide a day with social, legal, medical services, and distribution of food and clothing for workers who are away from their families as migrant laborers. Catholic communities and other denominations provide services in a variety of ways. Many senior citizens, community organizations and youth groups engage in migrant outreach. As church leaders, animating and encouraging such outreach is an important part of our ministry.

These are all good efforts but, are we doing enough? Pope Francis has done more for migrant services than any religious leader today, yet he said, “the worst discrimination which the poor suffer is the lack of spiritual care.”(EG. 200)

“Feed My Lambs” / “Apacienta mis ovejas”

“Apacienta mis ovejas” (Jn. 21: 15-17)

¿Nos tomamos esto en serio? Al considerar a Jesús alimentando a cinco mil personas con cinco panes de cebada y dos peces, la Iglesia ve este evento como un precursor de la Última Cena, cuando Jesús nos dio su carne para comer y su sangre para beber en la Eucaristía. El año pasado se centró nuestra atención a la Eucaristía, pero me pregunto si ha habido demasiado énfasis en la teología y la devoción a la presencia sagrada en la Eucaristía sin suficiente énfasis en la recepción del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.

Creo que es mucho más importante dar y recibir la Eucaristía que adorar a Cristo en el santísimo. Cuando Jesús caminó con Pedro y le preguntó tres veces si Pedro lo amaba, Jesús dijo: “Apacienta mis corderos… Cuida de mis ovejas… Apacienta mis ovejas”. La semana pasada en Carolina del Norte celebramos dos misas en el campo con trabajadores agrícolas. La fe de los trabajadores fue obvia en su reverencia y gratitud por la presencia de los líderes de la Iglesia que llevaron la Misa a los campos. Las parroquias locales y los propios trabajadores prepararon buenas comidas para compartir con los trabajadores, y en la celebración más grande hubo una feria médica en la que se realizaron examines de salud a los trabajadores, se les presentó ropa y suministros personales de artículos para los trabajadores. Supongo que podríamos decir que la Iglesia estaba “cuidando a las ovejas”, y alimentamos bien a la gente durante el día, pero al considerar las palabras de Jesús a Pedro, “apacienta mis ovejas”, ¿hacemos lo suficiente?

Celebramos la Misa y la Eucaristía a disposición de los campesinos, pero sólo alrededor del 25% de los trabajadores que asistieron a las Misas recibieron el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. La reverencia de los trabajadores y su respuesta a las oraciones representaba a un grupo de personas mucho más comprometidas con la fe católica que el pequeño grupo que recibía el sacramento. Cuando pregunto a la gente por qué no reciben la Eucaristía, digo que son indignos sin hablar del pecado que debería impedirles recibir la Eucaristía. Las críticas y los castigos de los catequistas, los religiosos y el clero han avergonzado a los pobres fieles porque ningún consejo, ni siquiera el del sacramento de la reconciliación, ayuda a los humildes y fieles trabajadores a recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.

Necesitamos enseñar a la gente acerca de nuestra fe, pero necesitamos alimentar a los pobres con la Comunión. El Papa Francisco dice que “la peor discriminación que enfrentan los pobres es la falta de atención espiritual”. Un trabajador agrícola me dijo una vez: “La Iglesia nos dará comida, atención médica, ropa y servicios legales, pero no nos dará el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo”. Jesús alimentando a la gente en la ladera de la montaña era un símbolo de la Eucaristía. Hoy necesitamos hacer más para alimentar a los pobres con la Eucaristía. Necesitamos evitar que la vergüenza impida a las personas recibir la Eucaristía. Después de todo, justo antes de recibir la Eucaristía, todos proclamamos: “Señor, yo no soy digno…”

“Feed My Lambs” (Jn. 21: 15-17)

Do we take this seriously? When considering Jesus feeding five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish, the Church sees this event as a precursor to the Last Supper when Jesus gave us his flesh to eat and his blood to drink in the Eucharist. This past year has been focused on the Eucharist, but I wonder if there has been too much emphasis on the theology and devotion to the sacred presence in the Eucharist without sufficient emphasis on the receiving of the Body and Blood of Christ.

I believe that there is much more importance in giving and receiving the Eucharist than adoring Christ in the Eucharist. When Jesus walked with Peter and three times asked if Peter loved him, Jesus said, “Feed my lambs….Tend my sheep….Feed my sheep.” Last week in North Carolina, we celebrated two field Masses with farmworkers. The faith of the workers was obvious in their reverence and gratitude for the presence of Church leaders brining the Mass to the fields. The local parishes and the workers themselves prepare good meals to be shared with the workers, and at the larger celebration there was a medical fair giving health checks for the workers, clothing presented to the workers and personal supplies of toiletries for the workers. I guess that we could say that the Church was “tending to the sheep”, and we fed the people well for the day, but when considering Jesus words to Peter, “feed my lambs,” do we do enough?

We made the Mass and Eucharist available to the farm workers, but only about 25% of the workers attending the Masses received the Body and Blood of Christ. The reverence of the workers and their responding to the prayers represented a group of people much more engaged in the Catholic faith than the small group receiving the sacrament. When I ask people why they do not receive the Eucharist, then claim unworthiness while not speaking of sin that should prevent them from receiving the Eucharist. Criticism and chastisement from catechists, religious people and clergy have shamed poor people of faith that no consolation even from the sacrament of reconciliation helps the humble faithful workers received the Body and Blood of Christ.

We need to teach people about our faith, but we need to feed the poor with the sacrament. Pope Francis says that “the worst discrimination that the poor face is the lack of spiritual care.” A farmworker once told me, “The Church will give us food, medical attention, clothing and legal services, but fails to give us the Body and Blood of Christ.” Jesus feeding the people on the mountainside was symbolic of Eucharist. Today we need to do more to feed the poor with the Eucharist. We need to prevent shame from preventing people from receiving the Eucharist. After all, right before we receive the Eucharist, we all proclaim, “Lord, I am not worthy….”

La oficina de Atención Pastoral para Migrantes, Refugiados y Viajeros de la USCCB y la Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes realizan una visita anual a diferentes regiones de los Estados Unidos para reconocer y apoyar la extensión católica a los trabajadores agrícolas migrantes. La visita de este año fue a la diócesis de Raleigh, Carolina del Norte. Cada año, la diócesis tiene una misa y una fiesta para los trabajadores y ofreció la clausura y una buena oportunidad para conocer comunidades comprometidas con el cuidado de los trabajadores agrícolas.

Se informó a la gente que habría varios sacerdotes y el obispo presentes para la misa, oportunidad para confesiones, voluntarios médicos para realizar exámenes de salud, mucha comida, juegos y alegría. Varios cientos de trabajadores agrícolas vinieron y fue una celebración llena de alegría. Fue la culminación de una visita que incluyó misas en una planta empacadora de cangrejo y visitas a trabajadores en varios sitios.

Nuestras visitas fueron con trabajadores bajo los programas de trabajadores H2A, por lo tanto, todo es legal aquí. Sus condiciones de vida y de trabajo son vergonzosas y desgarradoras. El peligro impactante que no habría conocido fueron las enfermedades relacionadas con la nicotina por el contacto constante con las plantas de tabaco, y lo poco que se hizo para proteger a los trabajadores de los peligros del trabajo.

Diocesan Campesino Mass

The USCCB office of Pastoral Care for Migrants, Refugees and Travelers and the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network has an annual visit to different regions of the United States to dioceses to recognize and support Catholic outreach to migrant farmworkers. This year’s visit was to the diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina. Each year the diocese has a Mass and fiesta for workers and it offered the closure and good opportunity to experience committed communities to care for the farmworkers.

People were informed that there would be several priests and the Bishop present for the Mass, opportunity for confessions, medical volunteers to do health screening, plenty of food, games and fun. Several hundred farmworkers came and it was a joy filled celebration. It was the culmination of a visit that included Masses in a crab packaging plant and visits with workers at several sites.

Our visits were with workers under the H2A workers programs, therefore all legally here. Their work and living conditions are embarrassing and heartbreaking. The shocking danger that I would not have known was nicotine related illnesses from constant contact with tobacco plants, and how little was done to protect workers from the dangers of the work.

We need better protection of farmworkers. Here is a link for other concerns about protecting farm workers.

Fiesta de San Alfonso de Ligorio

Hoy es la fiesta de San Alfonso de Ligorio. Crecí en una parroquia redentorista y cuando experimenté el interés por la vocación religiosa, no conocía ninguna otra congregación. Sabía que San Alfonso quería que trabajáramos con los “más abandonados”. En su época, reconoció que los pobres del campo recibían muy poca atención por parte de los sacerdotes de su época. La mayoría de los sacerdotes se encontraban en las ciudades más grandes. Sin embargo, quedó muy impresionado por la fe de los pobres. La fe era más terrenal. No fue complicado con mucho debate sobre teología y administración de los asuntos de la Iglesia.

En la actualidad, están ocurriendo muchos paralelos en las comunidades católicas rurales hoy. En muchas diócesis, hay una disminución de las vocaciones sacerdotales y se está produciendo una consolidación de las iglesias. Ciertamente, tenemos mayores medios de transporte, pero no todos en las zonas rurales de Estados Unidos tienen acceso a transporte seguro y, especialmente entre los trabajadores migrantes temporeros, existe una dificultad excepcional para participar regularmente en las actividades de la Iglesia. No debemos olvidar a las personas que se encuentran al margen de la Iglesia.

Hoy, la Red Católica de Campesinos Migrantes y la oficina de Cuidado Pastoral para Migrantes, Refugiados y Viajeros de la USCCB visitan la diócesis de Raleigh, Carolina del Norte. CMFN y PCMRT realizan visitas anuales a las diócesis para apoyar y fomentar el ministerio con los trabajadores migrantes rurales. El año pasado fuimos a Yakima, Washington. Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori

Today is the feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori. I grew up in a Redemptorist parish and when I experienced an interest in religious vocation, I did not know of any other congregation. I knew that St. Alphonsus wanted us to work with the “most abandoned”. In his time, he recognized that the rural poor received very little attention from the priests of his time. Most priests were found in the larger cities. Yet, he was very impressed by the faith of the poor. The faith was more earthy. It was not complicated with a great deal of debate on theology and administration of the affairs of the Church.

There is a great deal of parallel happening in rural Catholic communities today. In many dioceses, there is a decline in priestly vocations, and there is consolidation of churches taking place. Certainly, we have greater means of transportation, but not everyone in rural America has access to secure transportation and especially amongst the migrant seasonal workers, there is exceptional difficulty in regularly participating in Church activities. We need to not forget people on the fringes of the Church.

Today, the Catholic Migrant Farmworker Network and the USCCB office, Pastoral Care for Migrants, Refugees and Travelers visits the diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina. CMFN and PCMRT make annual visits to dioceses to support and encourage ministry with rural migrant workers. Last year we went to Yakima, Washington. Please pray for our week in the rural communities of North Carolina.

Próxima fiesta de San Alfonso

A medida que se acerca la fiesta de San Alfonso de Ligorio, el 1 de agosto, para los Redentoristas es un momento para reflexionar sobre nuestro llamado. Las lecturas dominicales de los dos últimos domingos fueron útiles para recordar a nuestro fundador, especialmente cuando Jesús observó que los pobres que lo seguían eran como “ovejas sin pastor”. Cuando Alfonso pasó un tiempo en Scala, Italia, reconoció que los pobres de las zonas rurales carecían de la atención de los sacerdotes. Había muchos sacerdotes en Nápoles, pero las comunidades rurales carecían de sacerdotes y de disponibilidad de sacramentos y misa. Pidió a otros que lo acompañaran para ayudar a los “más abandonados”.

Me preocupa la salud de la Iglesia en las ciudades pequeñas e incluso medianas de los Estados Unidos hoy. Hay muchos pueblos que alguna vez tuvieron una Iglesia católica y su propio sacerdote. Ahora algunas son misiones de parroquias más grandes a veinte o cuarenta millas de distancia. Otros incluso han sido cerrados. Algunos sacerdotes rurales celebran misas en dos o tres pueblos diferentes todos los domingos. Es difícil prestar atención personal a los feligreses y las misas pueden resultar difíciles para muchas personas. Muchas personas trabajan en empleos relacionados con el turismo, centros de atención a los ancianos y ocupaciones que exigen su presencia los domingos. Muchos trabajadores rurales no pueden asistir a los servicios religiosos debido a sus horarios de trabajo y al acceso limitado que se les brinda a una hora del día.

Algunos pastores rurales tienen trabajos diocesanos que crean dificultades para que los sacerdotes estén presentes en muchas actividades comunitarias. La vida religiosa católica de los pueblos que alguna vez fueron conocidos por su catolicismo es ahora simplemente una comunidad que solo se reúne una vez a la semana para misa y las actividades de la Iglesia en la comunidad están disminuyendo. Muchos católicos rurales se sienten como “ovejas sin pastores”.

Cuando salgo a trabajar con los trabajadores agrícolas, reconozco cada vez más ovejas sin pastores en las comunidades rurales. Que los servidores de las comunidades rurales descubran nuevas formas de celebrar la fe, no sólo para grupos especializados, sino para toda la comunidad.

Coming Feast of St. Alphonsus

As the feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori approaches, August 1, for Redemptorists is a time to reflect on our calling. The Sunday readings of the past two Sundays were helpful in remembering our founder, especially as Jesus observed that the poor following him were like “sheep without a shepherd.” When Alphonsus spent time in Scala, Italy, he recognized rural poor as lacking the attention of priests. There were many priests in Naples, but rural communities lacked priests and the availability of sacraments and Mass. He asked others to go with him to help the “most abandoned.”

I worry about the health of the Church in small and even medium sized towns across the United States today. There are many towns that once had a Catholic Church, and their own priest are now missions of larger parishes twenty to forty miles away. Some of the rural priests have Masses in two or three different towns every Sunday. It is more and more difficult to give particular attention to parishioners, and Mass times may be difficult for many people to attend. People who work in tourism related jobs or nursing care find Mass times inconvenient or even impossible.

Some rural pastors have diocesan jobs that create difficulties for priests to be present at many community activities. The Catholic religious life of towns once known for their Catholicism is now simply a community that only gathers once a week for Mass and there are diminishing activities of the Church in the community. Many rural Catholics are feeling like “sheep without shepherds.”

When going out to work with farmworkers, I recognize more and more sheep without shepherds in rural communities. May servants of rural communities discover new ways of celebrating faith, not only for specialized groups, but for the entire community.
