La predicación es esencial al ministerio redentorista. Nuestra predicación se realiza en retiros y misiones parroquiales. Durante los primeros dos años de Casa San Alfonso, realizamos retiros para los programas de educación religiosa y juvenil de la parroquia de San José. Después de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud, varias parroquias nos pidieron que ofreciéramos retiros para jóvenes. Algunos pastores preguntaron si haríamos misiones parroquiales en parroquias que comenzaban a celebrar misas en español.
Comenzamos a ofrecer retiros para jóvenes y retiros preparando candidatos de Confirmación en comunidades rurales. Yo celebraba misas en español cada dos fines de semana en Basalt, Carbondale, Rifle y Glenwood Springs. Uno de los primeros retiros que ofrecieron los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso fue para los jóvenes de Basalt y Carbondale. Celebramos el retiro en Aspen. El retiro fue una bendición para las comunidades de Basalt y Carbondale, pero fue muy especial para nuestro grupo de Denver. Para varias personas de la Casa, fue la primera vez que estuvieron en las montañas. Nuestro equipo de retiro se sorprendió con las historias de los lugareños sobre las estrellas de cine y las celebridades que a menudo se ven en Aspen.
Los jóvenes de Casa San Alfonso dirigieron los retiros, con nuestro apoyo, pero a medida que se planificaron los retiros, los jóvenes asumieron sus roles en las misiones como iguales a los Redentoristas. Queríamos que los jóvenes reconocieran que podían compartir su fe con los demás y evangelizar con su ejemplo y su enseñanza.
Los retiros invitaron a los jóvenes sean orgullosos de la cultura y la fe hispana. Los retiros animaron a los jóvenes a celebrar activamente las fiestas y tradiciones de la cultura hispana. Dado que la mayoría de nuestros jóvenes eran de México, nuestros retiros enseñaron tradiciones y prácticas de fe mexicanas. Queríamos que los jóvenes aprendieran la historia religiosa de sus países y abrazaran la espiritualidad de sus prácticas tradicionales.
Los retiros iniciaron a los jóvenes en el ministerio redentorista. Cuando los pastores pidieron que las misiones parroquiales se predicaran tanto en inglés como en español, nos preparamos para ofrecer misiones bilingües. Queríamos que los jóvenes nos ayudaran en las misiones y teníamos que desarrollar roles misioneros para la comunidad de Casa San Alfonso.

Invitamos a todos que participaron en la vida de Casa San Alfonso, 1991 a 1996, a una misa en la Iglesia San José en Denver, el Primero de Agosto, a las 10:00 de la mañana. Padre Miguel McAndrew, C.Ss.R. va a celebrar la misa. Hay convivio después en el parque en frente de West High School. Que vengan jóvenes de la Casa San Alfonso, sus familias. Que vengan los padrinos de la Casa que eran esencial en la vida de la casa. Que vengan padres y familiares de los jóvenes de la Casa también.

Youth retreats
Called to evangelize
Preaching is at the heart of Redemptorist ministry. Our preaching is often done in the settings of retreats and parish missions. During the first two years of Casa San Alfonso, we held retreats for St. Joseph’s parish youth and religious education programs. After World Youth Day, several parishes asked us to offer retreats for youth. A few pastors asked if we would do parish missions in parishes that were beginning to celebrate Masses in Spanish.
We began offering youth retreats and pre-Confirmation retreats in several rural communities. I celebrated Spanish Masses every other weekend in Basalt, Carbondale, Rifle and Glenwood Springs. One of the first retreats that young people from Casa San Alfonso offered was for the youth of Basalt and Carbondale. We held the retreat in Aspen. The retreat was a blessing for the Basalt and Carbondale communities, but it was more special for our group from Denver. For several people from the Casa, it was the first time that they had ever been in the mountains. Our retreat team was amazed by the stories of the locals about the movie stars and celebrities often seen in Aspen.
The youth of Casa San Alfonso led the retreats, with our support, but as the retreats were planned, the young people took on their roles as equals with the Redemptorists. We wanted the young people to recognize that they could share their faith with others and evangelize by their example and their teaching.
The retreats invited young people to take pride in the culture of Hispanic faith. The retreats encouraged youth to actively celebrate the feasts and traditions of Hispanic culture. Since most of our young people were from Mexico, our retreats taught Mexican traditions and practices of faith. We wanted young people to learn about the religious history of their countries and to embrace the spirituality of their traditional practices.
Retreats initiated young people into Redemptorist ministry. As pastors asked for parish missions to be preached in both English and Spanish, we prepared to offer bilingual missions. We wanted young people to help us on the missions, and we had to develop missionary roles for our Casa San Alfonso community.

Announcement: Thirtieth Anniversary Celebration of Casa San Alfonso
We invite all who participated in the life of Casa San Alfonso, 1991 to 1996, to a mass at St. Joeseph’s Church in Denver, on August 1st, at 10:00 am. Father Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R. will celebrate the mass. There is a potluck picnic afterwards in the park in front of West High School. Come, all who were part of our Casa San Alfonso Community. Come, Jóvenes and their families. Come padrinos and amigos de la Casa. And come, parents and relatives of the Casa San Alfonso community.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
