La misión de Casa San Alfonso evoluciona
Casa San Alfonso fue una iniciativa redentorista que comenzó con los principios; VER, JUZGAR, ACTUAR. Comenzó para descubrir las necesidades de las personas al margen de la sociedad y la vida de fe. Nuestra misión era “evangelizar y ser evangelizados por los pobres”. Que los pobres nos evangelicen comenzó reconociendo la presencia de Dios en la vida de los pobres. Jesús dijo: “Cuando tenía hambre, me diste de comer. Cuando tenía sed, me diste de beber. Cuando era forastero, me recibías …” Veníamos a caminar con jóvenes, adolescentes hasta treinta años. No solo deseamos ver sus necesidades, sino conocer sus dones, sus alegrías, sus ansiedades, sus heridas y especialmente su fe.
Experimentamos con formas de evangelización, antiguas y nuevas. A mediados de esos años, participamos en la reunión más grande en los Estados Unidos de jóvenes católicos de todo el mundo cuando el Papa Juan Pablo II vino a Denver. Junto con los jóvenes, ofrecimos retiros y misiones parroquiales. Mientras estábamos en la Casa, invitamos a varios jóvenes a vivir con nosotros y participar en nuestra misión. Varios cientos de jóvenes entraron por nuestras puertas para encontrar aliento, fe y comunidad. Un grupo central de hombres y mujeres terminaron la escuela secundaria, obtuvieron el GED y continuaron sus estudios universitarios y técnicos. Algunos ingresaron a ministerios religiosos, educación, atención médica, militares y otras formas de servir a los demás.
Nuestras primeras misiones parroquiales fueron en parroquias y comunidades redentoristas donde frecuentemente ofrecimos misa. El primer año de misiones parroquiales, ofrecimos dos misiones, luego tres o cuatro el año siguiente. Otras parroquias comenzaron a pedir misiones y programamos seis misiones en Colorado y una en Omaha, NE. Establecimos un equipo de misión para trabajar juntos durante seis meses. El hermano Marco continuó el ministerio de la Casa con los jóvenes que vivían en la Casa. El equipo de la misión regresó a casa cuando fue posible. En mayo, todos los que vivían en la Casa terminaron la escuela secundaria y estaban avanzando en sus vidas. P. Patricio se mudó a un nuevo ministerio y sabíamos que Casa San Alfonso no continuaría.
Patricio fue como misionero a Brasil. El hermano Marco pasó a otro ministerio. Los llamados a misiones parroquiales bilingües aumentaron y junto con el P. Roberto Simon, formemos un equipo de voluntarios laicos de jóvenes misioneros para ofrecer misiones bilingües. Dentro de cinco años, ofrecimos misiones en 150 comunidades en quince estados del Medio Oeste y Oeste.
Durante el verano de 1996, celebramos las alegrías y los logros de la juventud de Casa San Alfonso, pero también derramamos lágrimas al terminar la misión de Casa San Alfonso. El 1 de octubre de 1996 cerró Casa San Alfonso.
Sabemos que muchas vidas fueron tocadas por la misión de Casa San Alfonso. Este próximo domingo 1 de agosto de 2021 celebramos treinta años desde la fundación de Casa San Alfonso y la Iglesia donde comenzó, la Iglesia de San José en Denver. A medida que nos reunamos, compartiremos nuestros recuerdos e historias, pero reflexionemos sobre lo que Casa San Alfonso significó para cada uno de nosotros. ¿Cómo ha sido afectada su vida por nuestro tiempo juntos en la Casa?

Invitamos a todos que participaron en la vida de Casa San Alfonso, 1991 a 1996, a una misa en la Iglesia San José en Denver, el Primero de Agosto, a las 10:00 de la mañana. Padre Miguel McAndrew, C.Ss.R. va a celebrar la misa. Hay convivio después en el parque en frente de West High School. Que vengan jóvenes de la Casa San Alfonso, sus familias. Que vengan los padrinos de la Casa que eran esencial en la vida de la casa. Que vengan padres y familiares de los jóvenes de la Casa también.
Celebra la fiesta de San Alfonso con nosotros.

The mission of Casa San Alfonso evolves
Casa San Alfonso was a Redemptorist initiative that began with the principles for mission, SEE, JUDGE, ACT. It began as an initiative to discover needs of people on the margins of society and church. Our mission was to “evangelize and to be evangelized by the poor.” Letting the poor evangelize us began with recognizing God’s loving presence in the lives of poor. Jesus said, “When I was hungry, you gave me to eat. When I was thirsty, you gave me drink. When I was a stranger, you welcomed me…” We came to walk with young people, teenagers to thirty years of age. We not only wish to see their needs, but to know their gifts, their joys, their anxieties, their hurts and most especially their faith.
We experimented with forms of evangelization, old and new. In the middle of those years, we participated in the largest gathering in the United States of Catholic youth from all over the world when Pope John Paul II came to Denver. Together with young people, we offered retreats and parish missions. While in the Casa, we invited several young men to live with us and to participate in our mission. Several hundred young people entered our doors to find encouragement, faith and community. A core group of men and women completed high school, achieved GEDs, went on to college and technical training. Some entered religious ministries, education, health care, military and other ways to serve others.
Our first parish missions were in Redemptorist parishes and communities where we frequently offered Mass. The first year of parish missions, we offered two missions, then three or four the next year. Other parishes began asking for missions and we scheduled six missions in Colorado and one in Omaha, NE. We established a mission team to work together for six months. Brother Marco continued the youth house ministry with the young people living at the Casa. The mission team came home when possible. In May all of those living in the Casa finished high school and they were moving on in their lives. Fr. Patrick moved to a new ministry, and we knew that Casa San Alfonso would not continue.
Fr. Patrick went as a missionary to Brazil. Brother Marco moved on to another ministry. Calls for bilingual parish missions increased and along with Fr. Bob Simon, I formed a lay volunteer team of young missionaries to offer bilingual missions. In five years, we offered missions in 150 communities in fifteen states in the Midwest and West.
Over the summer of 1996, we celebrated the joys and accomplishments of the youth of Casa San Alfonso, but we also shed tears as we ended the mission of Casa San Alfonso. On October 1, 1996, Casa San Alfonso closed.
We know that many lives were touched by the mission of Casa San Alfonso. This coming Sunday, August 1, 2021 We celebrate thirty years since the founding of Casa San Alfonso and the Church where it began, St. Joseph´s Church in Denver. As we gather, we will share our memories and stories, but let us reflect on what Casa San Alfonso meant to each of us personally. How has your life been affected by our time together at the Casa?

Announcement: Thirtieth Anniversary Celebration of Casa San Alfonso
We invite all who participated in the life of Casa San Alfonso, 1991 to 1996, to a mass at St. Joeseph’s Church in Denver, on August 1st, at 10:00 am. Father Mike McAndrew, C.Ss.R. will celebrate the mass. There is a potluck picnic afterwards in the park in front of West High School. Come, all who were part of our Casa San Alfonso Community. Come, Jóvenes and their families. Come padrinos and amigos de la Casa. And come, parents and relatives of the Casa San Alfonso community.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
