Día de Candelaria
Pasando los años, muchos mexicanos decían: “Padre, tiene su humilde casa en México”. Era más que un dicho sencillo. La gente lo decía en serio. He tenido la oportunidad de visitar muchos de mis “casas humildes”. Fue un placer visitar a mis amigos en Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. Cuando llegué el 29 de enero 2007, no sabía que iba a participar en la fiesta de la Presentación de Jesús en el Templo. La fiesta duraría más de una semana en el Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rosario y más de treinta mil peregrinos acudirían a la celebración.
Varios miles de personas caminaron hasta seis días desde más de 150 kilómetros de distancia. Antes de ese tiempo en el santuario, el día de Candelaria era una fiesta insignificante para mí. El párroco del santuario me pidió que fuera capellán de un par de grupos de peregrinos que no tenían un sacerdote acompañándolos, así que celebré Misas para tres grupos, y tenía que comer unas seis comidas al día con la gente de los grupos según sus deseos. Tenía que pasar tiempo con los dos grupos.
Después de cinco días en el santuario, hice arreglos para regresar el año siguiente, pero esta vez caminando en peregrinación de seis días con un grupo de Tepic, Nayarit. He caminado como peregrino al santuario cuatro veces en los últimos quince años. Ha sido un momento destacado de mi vida caminar con los hispanos en sus celebraciones de fe.
He estado involucrado en el Ministerio Hispano durante más de treinta años y mi mayor alegría ha sido participar en tradiciones de fe dirigidas por el pueblo y no por ministros ordenados. El papel del sacerdote es escuchar confesiones, ofrecer misas para la gente, pero más que nada ser testigos de la presencia de Jesús en la vida de fe de los pobres.

Candlemas
For years, many Mexicans would say, “Father, you have a humble home in Mexico.” It was more than just a saying. People meant it. I have had the opportunity to visit many of my “humble homes.” It was a delight to visit my friends in Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. When I arrived on January 29, 2007, I did not realize that I was to take part in the fiesta of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The fiesta would go on for more than a week at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary, and over thirty thousand pilgrims would come for the celebration.
Several thousand people walked up to six days coming from over 100 miles away. Before that time at the shrine, Candlemas was an insignificant feast for me. The pastor at the shrine asked me to be chaplain for a couple groups of pilgrims that did not have a priest accompanying them, so I celebrated Masses for two groups, and had to eat about six meals a day with people from the groups as they wanted me to spend time with their groups.
After five days at the shrine, I made arrangements to return the following year, but this time I wanted to walk the six-day pilgrimage with a group from Tepic, Nayarit. I have walked as a pilgrim to the shrine four times over the past fifteen years. It has been a highlight of my life walking with Hispanic people in their celebrations of faith.
I have been engaged in Hispanic Ministry for over thirty years, and my greatest joy has been taking part in traditions of faith that are led by the people rather than by ordained ministers. The role of the priest is to hear confessions, provide Masses for the people, but more than anything to be witnesses to the presence of Jesus in the faith life of the poor.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
