Después de un descanso
Solo he escrito un par de blogs en las últimas dos semanas. Mi hermano, Roberto, falleció después de Navidad, y entre viajes a Denver para estar con miembros de la familia para su funeral, comencé una asignación para tomar el lugar de un sacerdote durante cinco semanas mientras él se iba para pasar tiempo con la familia. Quiero agradecer a todos los que me enviaron condolencias a mí y a nuestra familia. Necesitaba tomarme un tiempo para la familia y adaptarme a la asignación a una parroquia rural en Oklahoma. Fue bueno tener un tiempo de no escribir blogs.
Como sacerdote, en la celebración de funerales, una de las lecturas favoritas para los funerales es Jn. 11:19-27, la historia de Marta hablando con Jesús: “Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto. Pero aun así, yo sé que puedes pedir a Dios cualquier cosa, y Dios te la concederá”. Jesús le dijo: “Tu hermano resucitará”. Marta le respondió: “Ya sé que será resucitado en la resurrección de los muertos, en el último día”. Le dijo Jesús: “Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; El que cree en mí, aunque muera, vivirá”.
La lectura adquirió un significado especial para mí cuando leí este pasaje en el funeral de mi propio hermano. Las Escrituras siempre nos hablan, pero hay momentos en que uno las toma más en serio. Oramos por la persona fallecida, pero nuestra presencia en el funeral es para los miembros de la familia.
Desde el funeral, me encuentro prestando más atención a las relaciones en la vida que son especialmente importantes. En mi trabajo, es fácil quedar atrapado en las luchas de las personas a las que sirvo en el ministerio. Trabajo con personas que viven al margen de la sociedad y de la Iglesia. Son los olvidados y a menudo maltratados por la sociedad. Hay muchas cosas que hacer en el ministerio, pero lo más importante es recordar la dignidad y la fe de cada persona que conozco. Reflexionar sobre las vidas de aquellos cuyo recuerdo celebramos nos recuerda que debemos recordar tratar a cada persona que encontramos como nuestro hermano y hermana.
Que la paz llegue a todos los que están cuidando a sus seres queridos en sus últimos días y a los que han fallecido antes que nosotros.

After a break
I have only written a couple blogs over the past two weeks. My brother, Bob, passed away after Christmas, and in between trips to Denver to be with family members for his funeral, I began an assignment to take a priest’s place for five weeks as he went away for family time. I want to thank all of those who sent condolences to me and to our family. I needed to take time for family and adjusting to the assignment to a rural parish in Oklahoma. It was good to take time away from writing blogs.
As a priest, I have celebrated many funerals and one of my favorite readings for funerals is Jn. 11:19-27, the story of Martha speaking with Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said to him, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.”
The reading took on particular meaning for me as I read this passage at my own brother’s funeral. Scripture always speaks to us, but there are times when one takes it more seriously. We pray for the deceased person, but our presence at the funeral is for the family members.
Since the funeral, I find myself paying more attention to the relationships in life that are especially important. In my work, it is easy to get caught up in the struggles of people whom I serve in ministry. I work with people on the margins of society and the Church. They are the forgotten and often mistreated of society. There are many things to do in the ministry, but most important is remembering the dignity and faith of each person whom I meet. Reflecting on the lives of those whose memory we celebrate reminds us of remembering to treat each and every person we encounter as our brother and sister.
May peace come to all who are caring for loved ones in their last days and for those who have passed before us.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
