Adviento durante el COVID
Al comenzar el Adviento, recuerdo el año 2020. Estaba trabajando en la Diócesis de Jefferson City. Si bien fue durante una época en la que la mayor parte del ministerio era limitado por COVID, pero ofrecimos servicios en línea. Decidimos presentar dos Triduos de Adviento, uno en español y otro en inglés. El Triduo en inglés fue durante tres noches antes de la Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción, el 8 de diciembre y en español fue del 9 al 11 de diciembre para Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Fue bueno que presentamos el programa en línea, porque solo hacía un día que me recuperaba del COVID para el programa en inglés. Nuestro énfasis para los Triduos fue cómo preparamos para la venida del Señor.
Ese año el Adviento y la Navidad fueron difíciles. No recuerdo exactamente el día, pero un día durante ese tiempo de Adviento estaba caminando por un parque, escuchando un canal de noticias en mi radio. Todas las noticias eran negativas y desalentadoras. Me sentía bastante enojado. Una persona me saludó alegremente y me rompió el enojo por la noticia del día. Dije, no más malas noticias para el Adviento. Apagué las noticias y puse algo de música. Ese día decidí que durante el resto del Adviento alejaría la negatividad y la ira. No escucharía noticias en la radio ni en la televisión durante el resto de la temporada hasta después de Navidad.
Fue verdaderamente un Adviento bendecido. No sólo me ayudó en ese momento, sino que comencé a ver la bondad a mi alrededor. Incluso cuando la temperatura estuvo bajo cero durante un par de días, nada se interpuso en mi camino para aprovechar al máximo el Adviento y la Navidad de ese año.
Que nuestro Adviento sea esperanzador y alegre. Cada Adviento desde 2020, me gusta recordarme a mí mismo que debo dejar de lado lo negativo y celebrar lo bueno de la vida. Prepara el Camino del Señor.

Advent during COVID
As we begin Advent, I recall 2020. I was working in the Diocese of Jefferson City. While it was during a time when most ministry was limited by COVID, but we offered services online. We decided to present two Triduums for Advent, one in Spanish and one in English. The Triduum in English was for three evenings before the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8 and the Spanish was December 9-11 for Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was good that we offered the program online, because I was only one day past recovering from COVID for the English program. Our emphasis for the Triduums was on how we could prepare for the coming of the Lord.
It was an uneasy Advent and Christmas that year. I do not remember the day exactly, but one day during that Advent season I was walking in a park, listening to a news channel on my radio. All the news was negative, angry and discouraging. I was feeling rather angry. A person greeted me cheerfully and it broke my feeling angry at the news of the day. I said, no more bad news for Advent. I turned off the news and put on some music. I decided that day that for the rest of Advent, I would shut off negativity and anger. I would not listen to news on the radio or television for the rest of the season until after Christmas.
It was truly a blessed Advent for me. It not only helped in the moment, but I began to see beauty around me. Even when it dropped to below zero for a couple days, nothing got in my way of making the best of Advent and Christmas that year.
May your Advent be hopeful and joyful. Each Advent since 2020, I like to remind myself to put aside the negative and to celebrate the good in life. Prepare the Way of the Lord.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
