Una semana para celebrar los cincuenta años de sacerdocio
Voy a celebrar mi quincuagésimo aniversario con tres de mis familias. Hoy celebro con la familia de Casa San Alfonso, esos jóvenes inmigrantes que me introdujeron al ministerio hispano. Cuando me preguntan dónde aprendí español, siempre digo “en Denver, México”. Tuve los mejores maestros, jóvenes inmigrantes mexicanos que no solo me enseñaron español, sino que también me ayudaron a reconocer su ética de trabajo, humor, cultura, esperanza y fe. Esta será la tercera vez que estoy con ellos en los últimos dos años, ya que en 2021 celebramos el trigésimo aniversario de Casa San Alfonso y en 2022 celebramos la vida de Lucy, la madrina de Casa San Alfonso.
El jueves celebraré mi aniversario con mi familia redentorista en nuestra casa San Clemente, cerca de St. Louis. Será una celebración con algunos compañeros y con cohermanos, muchos que son mayores y fueron parte de mi formación y vida como redentorista durante todos estos años.
Luego, el próximo domingo, celebraré en mi parroquia de origen con mi familia, compañeros de mi escuela primaria en Holy Name y con miembros de la parroquia desde hace mucho tiempo. También incluirá a la comunidad hispana que se convirtió en parte de la comunidad parroquial cuando pasé un año y medio en la parroquia de 2013-2014. Ese día será un momento para recordar mi camino vocacional que comenzó en esa parroquia y escuela.
Al reflexionar de estos cincuenta años, no es como un logro, sino como la realización de las oportunidades en la vida que recibí en mi ministerio como Redentorista y como sacerdote. Verdaderamente, las mejores partes del ministerio tuvieron lugar en los momentos más ordinarios del ministerio y en los momentos inesperados que no parecían ser oportunidades para la gracia, pero resultaron en grandes bendiciones.

A week to celebrate fifty years of priesthood
I will be celebrating my fiftieth anniversary with three of my families. Today, I celebrate with the Casa San Alfonso family, those immigrant young people who introduced me to Hispanic ministry. When asked where I learned Spanish, I always say “in Denver, Mexico”. I had the greatest teachers, young Mexican immigrants who not only taught me Spanish, but helped me recognize their work ethic, humor, culture, hopes and faith. This will be my third time to be with them in the past two years, as in 2021 we celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of Casa San Alfonso and in 2022 we celebrated the life of Lucy, the madrina of Casa San Alfonso.
On Thursday, I will celebrate my anniversary with my Redemptorist family at St. Clement Health Care center near St. Louis. It will be a celebration with some classmates and with confreres, many who are older and were part of my formation and life as a Redemptorist for all these years.
Then, next Sunday, I will celebrate at my home parish with my family, classmates from my grade school years at Holy Name and with long time members of the parish. It also will include the Hispanic community that became part of the parish community when I spent a year and a half at the parish from 2013-2014. That day will be a time to remember my vocation journey that began in that parish and school.
As I reflect on these fifty years, it is not as an accomplishment, but as the realization of the opportunities in life that I received in my ministry as a Redemptorist and as a priest. Truly the best parts of ministry took place in the most ordinary moments of ministry and in the unexpected moments that hardly seemed to be opportunities for grace, but proved to be great blessings.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
