A Church that is always new

Pastoral ministry … seeks to abandon the complacent attitude that says: “We have always done it this way”. (EG 33)

When people of faith say, “We have always done it this way”, it is great disrespect for the missionary history of the faith. There was no complacency in Jesus. In the gospel of Mark, after Jesus’ first miracles took place in Capernaum, the Apostles told him: “everyone is looking for you.” He told them that they needed to go on to other villages to preach there. Missionary zeal has no room for complacency.

We are always responding to the environment we encounter. In times of peace, stability, employment, opportunity, health and loving community, we respond to faith challenges with hope, trust in God, and fellowship with other believers. We want to consider these moments as “ordinary” and we can become complacent in this environment. When we see others lacking peace, stability and harmony, we may come to blame them for their problems. Yet, a level of instability is truly what is ordinary in life. Illness, loss of employment, accidents, disagreements, loneliness, and a host of challenges create instability in life. These factors are more the “ordinary” of life than the extraordinary.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
