Renovando SU relación con Jesús
El tema de nuestra misión es: “Renueva su relación con Jesús”. Prepararme para esta misión ha sido una jornada personal, que me ha permitido reflexionar no solo sobre los temas de la misión, sino también considerar mi participación en misiones parroquiales durante los últimos cincuenta años. Desde 2020, la mayor parte de mi predicación misionera ha sido más breve, en forma de conferencias sobre un tema o un desafío actual en una comunidad. Se las podría haber llamado “mini-misiones”. Participar en una misión de siete días, desde su inicio el 5 de abril hasta su cierre el 11 de abril, es un momento para examinar nuestra relación personal y comunitaria con Dios.
¿Es nuestra fe demasiado personal? ¿Es demasiado individual? ¿Es egocéntrica en lugar de incluir a todas las criaturas y la creación de Dios? Renovar SU relación con Jesús es tanto personal como comunitario. Invitamos a los participantes de esta misión a preguntarse: “¿Cómo puedo renovar MI relación con Jesús? ¿Y cómo podemos nosotros renovar NUESTRA relación con Jesús?” Nuestra misión es un momento para renovar nuestra relación personal y nuestra relación eclesial con Jesús. En la liturgia del Viernes Santo, oramos por la Iglesia universal. Nuestra oración incluye orar por nuestros líderes religiosos, todos los fieles, todos los ritos dentro de la Iglesia, todos los catecúmenos, todos los cristianos, aquellos que creen en Dios pero no en Jesús, y aquellos que aún no han escuchado la buena nueva del Evangelio.
La conversión personal es un paso importante hacia la membresía en la Iglesia, pero si solo se centra en una relación personal con Jesús, puede ser un camino de fe solitario. Reconocer a Jesús en los marginados, reconocerlo en la periferia, es el acto por el cual no solo se juzgará a las personas, sino también a las naciones. Durante muchos años, cuando se proclamaba el Evangelio de Mateo, capítulo veinticinco, en las misas, hablaba de la responsabilidad individual de cuidar a los pobres, los hambrientos, los sedientos y los extranjeros. Sin embargo, cuando Jesús comenzó la parábola, las ovejas y los chivos no representaban a los creyentes individuales. Sobre el juicio, dice: «Todas las naciones serán llevadas a su presencia, y separará a unos de otros, al igual que el pastor separa las ovejas de los chivos» (Mt. 25,32).
Para la Jornada Mundial del Migrante y del Refugiado 2024, el Papa Francisco comenzó su mensaje diciendo: «Dios camina con su pueblo». Camina con cada una de sus criaturas. Su amor por nosotros es personal y comunitario. Para Dios, la fe personal y comunitaria son una sola cosa. No pueden separarse. Renovemos nuestra relación con Jesús.

Renewing YOUR relationship with Jesus
The theme of our mission is: “Renew your relationship with Jesus.” Preparing for this mission has been a personal journey for me to reflect not only on the themes of the mission, but to consider my participation in parish missions over the past fifty years. Since 2020, most of my mission preaching has been of a shorter variety, more in the form of conferences on a theme or a present challenge in a community. They may better have been called, “mini-missions”. Participation in a mission of seven days, from it’s opening on April 5 to its closing on April 11 is a time to examine our personal and communal relationship with God.
Is our faith too personal? Is it too individual? Is it self-centered rather than inclusive of all of God’s creatures and creation? Renewing YOUR relationship with Jesus is both personal and communal. We invite participants in this mission to ask of themselves “How can I renew MY relationship with Jesus? and How can WE renew OUR relationship with Jesus.” Our mission is a time for a renewal of our personal relationship and our Church relationship with Jesus. In our liturgy for Good Friday, we pray for the Church universal. Our prayer includes praying for our religious leaders, all the faithful, all rites within the Church, all catechumens, all Christians, those who believe in God but not in Jesus, and those who have not yet heard the good news of the Gospel.
Personal conversion is an important step towards membership in the Church, but if it only focuses on a personal relationship with Jesus, it can be a lonely journey. Recognizing Jesus in the outcast, recognizing him on the periphery is the act on which not only individuals will be judged, but nations will be judged. For many years, when the gospel of Matthew, chapter twenty-five is proclaimed at Masses, I spoke about individual responsibility to care for the poor, the hungry, the thirsty and the stranger, but when Jesus began the parable, the sheep and the goats did not represent individual believers. He says about the judgment, “all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” (Mt. 25:32)
For World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2024, Pope Francis began his message saying, “God walks with his people.” He walks with each and every one of his creatures. His love for us is both personal and communal. For God, personal and communal faith are one and the same. They cannot be separated. Let us “Renew OUR relationship with Jesus.”

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
