El domingo del Super Bowl, el anuncio de hegetsus.com apareció a veces. No me había dado cuenta de ello de antemano. Me sorprendió gratamente el sitio web. Lo primero que pensé fue preguntar cuánto dinero se gastó en una campaña que no era identificada con ninguna comunidad cristiana en particular. Sin embargo, llamó la atención sobre Jesús, que no juzgó, amenazó ni dividió a la gente. Nos llamó a “ámense unos a otros como yo los he amado”.
Comencé a buscar comentarios sobre el sitio web. Los comentarios más negativos provinieron de organizaciones y personas que rara vez se preocupan por las divisiones que puedan crear entre comunidades religiosas. Algunos critican un mensaje acerca de que Jesús fue un refugiado en Egipto, mientras que la misma gente tiene poca preocupación por los refugiados y solicitantes de asilo hoy. Hegetsus pone atención a la falta de atención al racismo y la intolerancia en muchas comunidades.

He Gets Us
On Super Bowl Sunday, the ad for hegetsus.com appeared a couple times. I had not been aware of it beforehand. I was pleasantly surprised by the website. My first thoughts were to question how much money was spent on a campaign that was not identifiable with any particular church. Yet, it called attention to Jesus who did not judge, threaten or divide people. He called on us to “Love one another as I have loved you.”
I began looking for commentaries about the website. The more negative commentaries came from organizations and people who are rarely concerned about divisions that they may create between faith communities. Some criticize a message about Jesus having been a refugee in Egypt, while the same people have little concern for refugees and asylum seekers of today. Hegetsus calls attention to the lack of attention to racism and bigotry in many communities today.
While I am uncomfortable with the large amounts of money spent in advertising, I was equally uncomfortable visiting a recently built Catholic church complex that must have cost over $25,000,000 in construction. Its ostentatious appearance distracted me, more than it did to inspire. I have celebrated Mass in barns, orchards, garages and wherever we could gather migrant farmworkers. Those places were my basilicas.
The campaign calls out religious leaders and communities on issues that should cause us to pause and ask how Jesus would respond to those neglected, offended and forgotten by religious communities today. I respect the message of hegetsus.com. May we all do better.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
