Nuestro profesor de Historia de la Iglesia
Tenemos la costumbre de recordar las vidas de los Redentoristas que murieron en el aniversario de su muerte. Ayer recordamos al P. Edward Day, C.Ss.R. Nos enseñó la historia de la Iglesia. Fue cinco años después del Concilio Vaticano cuando dijo: “Usted no se dará cuenta de los frutos del Concilio Vaticano II en su vida”. Nos dijo que habrá un entusiasmo inicial, seguido de un tiempo de rechazo al Concilio y un tiempo de reinventar el Concilio antes de que la Iglesia se dé cuenta de la bendición del Concilio. Cuando le preguntamos cuánto tiempo puede pasar hasta que veamos las bendiciones del Concilio, dijo que históricamente, las reformas de los concilios ecuménicos tardaron cien años en realizarse.
Fui ordenado ocho años después de la clausura del Concilio. Sus palabras han sido proféticas en mi experiencia. Sería bueno si pudiéramos comenzar a imaginar de nuevo el Consejo mientras buscamos una nueva normalidad en nuestro mundo después de la agitación de los últimos años. Se necesita valentía, paciencia, tolerancia y perdón, tanto en la Iglesia como en la sociedad, para crear una nueva normalidad.
Quizás no veamos los frutos del Concilio, pero debemos ser la levadura de un mundo tan dividido. No necesitamos condenar ni exaltar el pasado. Sin embargo, debemos aprender del pasado y apreciarlo. Necesitamos escuchar no sólo a nuestros maestros, sino también a aquellos que están al margen de la Iglesia. Escuchar y dialogar no sólo con quienes comparten nuestras creencias y valores, sino también escuchar a quienes están fuera de nuestras esferas normales de interés.
Las pruebas y dificultades de nuestros tiempos sólo se abordarán cuando nos escuchemos unos a otros, entremos en diálogo y juntos, como sociedad e Iglesia, podamos realizar las esperanzas de la fe. La paz sea con vosotros.

Our Church History professor
We have a custom of remembering the lives of Redemptorists who died on the anniversary of their deaths. Yesterday, we remembered Fr. Edward Day, C.Ss.R. He taught us Church history. It was only a few years since the close of the Second Vatican Council when he said, “You will not realize the fruits of the Second Vatican Council in your lifetime.” He told us that there will be an initial enthusiasm, followed by a time of rejection of the Council and a time of reimagining the Council before the Church realizes the blessing of the Council. When we asked him how long it may be until we see the blessings of the Council, he said that historically, reforms of ecumenical councils took a hundred years to be realized.
I was ordained eight years after the close of the Council. His words have been prophetic in my experience. It would be good if we could begin the reimagining of the Council as we seek a new normal in our world after the upheaval of recent years. It takes courage, patience, tolerance and forgiveness, both in the Church and in society to create a new normal.
We may not see the fruits of the Council, but we need to be the leaven of the world that is so divided. We need to neither condemn nor exalt the past. Yet, we need to learn from and appreciate the past. We need to listen not only to our teachers, but to those on the fringes of the Church. Listening and entering into dialogue with not only those who share beliefs and values, but also listening to those outside our normal spheres of interest.
The trials and difficulties of our times will only be addressed when we listen to one another, enter a dialogue and together as society and Church, we can realize the hopes of faith. Peace be with you.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
