Gente de la Periferia
Cada cristiano y cada comunidad discernirá cuál es el camino que el Señor le pide, pero todos somos invitados a aceptar este llamado: salir de la propia comodidad y atreverse a llegar a todas las periferias que necesitan la luz del Evangelio. [1]
¿Qué significa estar en la periferia? Significa pasar desapercibido, al margen de la sociedad viviendo en las sombras. Cuando las personas pasan desapercibidas, es fácil ignorarlas. Al no reconocer su presencia, la vida ordinaria de las comunidades parroquiales puede dejarlos en la periferia. Hoy en día, migración es un tema muy delicado y divisivo en Estados Unidos y Europa occidental. Los migrantes aparecen en las portadas de los periódicos todos los días, pero en el ministerio de la Iglesia suelen estar en la periferia.
En Caritas in Veritate, el Papa Benedicto XVI afirma que la migración internacional es un “fenómeno social que marca época, que requiere una fuerte y clarividente política de cooperación internacional para afrontarlo debidamente”.[2] Su complejidad desafía a las instituciones políticas, la economía, la seguridad, la fe y las familias. Entendió que “ningún país por sí solo puede ser capaz de hacer frente a los problemas migratorios actuales”. Afirmó que “todo emigrante es una persona humana que, en cuanto tal, posee derechos fundamentales inalienables que han de ser respetados por todos y en cualquier situación”. Y reconoció que el movimiento de personas no es únicamente un tema de migración. El turismo, la economía, la educación, la atención sanitaria, los problemas civiles, las guerras y los desastres naturales son factores que contribuyen a la migración mundial.
La Iglesia puede desempeñar un papel importante a la hora de abordar los desafíos que plantea la migración. Necesitamos ser audaces y creativos en nuestra respuesta a los migrantes y refugiados. Este llamado a la cooperación internacional es urgente en este momento. El Papa Francisco señala que “las migraciones constituirán un elemento determinante del futuro del mundo”.[3] Y nuestra respuesta no se trata de implementar programas de bienestar, sino de emprender una jornada junto con los migrantes del mundo. La migración de personas ha sido una constante en la historia de la humanidad, sin embargo, existen variaciones en la experiencia de los migrantes que ingresan a naciones y regiones del mundo que son únicas para su época y lugar.

People on the Periphery
Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the “peripheries” in need of the light of the Gospel.[1]
What does it mean to be on the periphery? It means to be unnoticed, on the fringes of society, on the margin, living in the shadows. When people are unnoticed, it is easy to ignore them. Since we do not recognize their presence, the ordinary life of parish communities may leave them on the periphery. Today, migration is a highly sensitive and divisive issue in the United States and Western Europe. Migrants are on the front pages of newspapers, but in Church ministry they are often on the periphery.
In Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI, states that international migration is a “social phenomenon of epoch-making proportions that requires bold, forward-looking policies of international cooperation if it is to be handled effectively.”[2] It’s complexity challenges political institutions, economics, security, faith, and families. He understood that no nation could “be expected to address today’s problems of migration by itself.” He asserted that “every migrant is a human person who, as such, possesses fundamental, inalienable rights that must be respected by everyone and in every circumstance.” He recognized that the movement of people is not solely an issue of migration. Tourism, economics, education, health care, civil distress, wars, and natural disasters are contributing factors to global migration.
The Church can play an important role in addressing the challenges migration poses. We need to be bold and creative in our response to migrants, immigrants, and refugees. This call for international cooperation is urgent at this time. Pope Francis notes that “Migrations, more than ever before, will play a pivotal role in the future of our world”.[3] And our response is not a case of implementing welfare programs, but of undertaking a journey together with migrants of the world. The migration of people has been a constant in human history, yet there are variations in the experience of migrants entering nations and regions of the world that are unique to their time and place.
