Me encanta el Adviento
Esta es mi época favorita del año. Nuestras liturgias de Adviento nos hablan del cumplimiento de las promesas de Dios a su pueblo. El Adviento es un tiempo para considerar nuestra vida y nuestra esperanza. Como sacerdote y redentorista, este es un momento para reflexionar no sólo sobre el llamado a la Virgen Madre y al Niño Jesús, sino también sobre lo que es esencial para nuestro llamado a seguir a Cristo. Me gusta aprovechar este tiempo para reflexionar sobre mi propia vocación como redentorista y sacerdote. Animo a los lectores a hacer de este tiempo un momento especial para renovar su fe y responder al llamado de Dios en sus vidas.
Cuando era niño me parecía normal considerar la vocación religiosa como una forma de vida. Entré en el seminario menor cuando tenía catorce años. Ochenta y un jóvenes ingresaron conmigo al seminario preparatorio de San José. Éramos jóvenes idealistas que seguían los desafíos idealistas que nos plantearon el presidente John F. Kennedy y el Papa Juan XXIII. Nos preguntamos qué podíamos hacer para mejorar el país, el mundo y la Iglesia.
A medida que han pasado los años, ha habido desafíos en el camino. La tristeza, las guerras y la violencia de nuestros tiempos son desalentadoras, pero podemos hacerlo mejor. Podemos ser mejores. Podemos considerar nuevos caminos, nueva vida. El Papa Francisco dice que hay demasiados “con cara de vinagre” (EG. 85) a nuestro alrededor. Recientemente celebré dos funerales para dos mujeres que ciertamente no tenían “caras de vinagre”. Fue hermoso escuchar a la gente decir de las mujeres que nadie podía dejarlas sin sentir amor y alegría.
El Adviento es una temporada para que renovemos nuestra confianza en que todos podemos hacerlo mejor. Incluso en los peores momentos, podemos trabajar para el bien, perdonar y dar la bienvenida a quienes se encuentran al margen de nuestras familias y comunidades. Que la paz llegue a todos durante esta temporada. Prepara el Camino del Señor.

Favorite time of year
This is my favorite time of the year. Our Advent liturgies speak to us of the fulfillment of God’s promises to his people. Advent is a time to consider our life and our hope. As a priest and as a Redemptorist, this is a time to reflect not only on the call of the Virgin mother and the child Jesus, but on what is essential to our calling to follow Christ. I like to use this time to reflect on my own vocation as a Redemptorist and a priest. I encourage readers to make this time a special moment to renew your faith and response to God’s call in your lives.
When I was a child, it seemed normal to consider a religious vocation as a way of life. I entered a minor seminary when I was fourteen. Eighty-one young men entered with me at St. Joseph Prep Seminary. We were idealistic young men following the idealistic challenges placed before us by President John F. Kennedy and Pope John XXIII. We asked ourselves what we could do to make the country, the world and the Church better.
As the years have passed, there have been challenges along the way. The sadness, wars and violence of our times is discouraging, but we can do better. We can be better. We can consider new ways, new life. Pope Francis says that there are too many “sourpusses” (EG. 85) around us. Recently, I celebrated two funerals for two women who certainly were not “sourpusses”. It was beautiful hearing people say of the women, that you could not leave them without feeling love and joy.
Advent is a season for us to renew our confidence that we all can do better. Even in the worst of times, we can work for good, forgive and welcome home those on the fringes of our families and communities. May peace come to all during this season. Prepare the Way of the Lord.

Oh Jesús, tú nos llamas: “Síganme”. Bendice, Señor, a todos los que acogen tu llamado. Puede que el camino no sea fácil, pero tenemos la confianza de que todo es posible si caminamos contigo. Que este viaje nos abra los ojos a las maravillas de tu amor por nosotros. Oramos por toda tu gente, por todos los creyentes e incrédulos, por los líderes y seguidores. Oramos por la sanación, el perdón, la compasión, la justicia y la paz. Oramos para que, al seguirte, nosotros también podamos ser pescadores de hombres. Bendícenos en nuestro viaje.
O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
