(Estoy recordando nuestra Casa San Alfonso en Denver de 1991 a 1996. El 9 de noviembre de 1991, varios jóvenes nos ayudaron a mudarnos a la Casa. Durante el día, los jóvenes escucharon muchas historias sobre San Alfonso y sobre el carisma de la Congregación.)

Cuando Jesús fue a la Sinagoga, tomó el rollo y encontró el pasaje de Isaías que hablaba de su misión. “El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí. Él me ha ungido para traer Buenas Nuevas a los pobres, para anunciar a los cautivos su libertad y a los ciegos que pronto van a ver. A despedir libres a los oprimidos, y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor”. (Lucas 4:18)
San Alfonso de Ligorio fundó la Congregación del Santísimo Redentor inspirado en el profeta Isaías y el mismo Jesús. Él y sus compañeros comenzaron el 9 de noviembre de 1732. Venían tiempos difíciles, pero querían servir a los “más abandonados”. Había personas a las que el ministerio ordinario de la Iglesia no llegaba. Hubo divisiones dentro de la Iglesia que obstaculizaron la misión de la Iglesia y escandalizaron a las mismas personas a quienes Jesús amaba.
Hoy, los Redentoristas identificamos a aquellos a quienes servimos en la Constitución 3 de la Regla Redentorista:
“Los más abandonados, a los que la Congregación es enviada de modo especial, son aquellos a quienes la Iglesia no ha podido proporcionar aún medios suficientes de salvación; los que nunca oyeron el mensaje de la Iglesia o no lo aceptan al menos como buena nueva, y finalmente aquellos a quienes perjudica la división de la Iglesia”. (C.SS.R. Const. 3)
Nuestros métodos de ministerio y los lugares donde servimos pueden cambiar, pero nuestra Congregación busca servir a los “más abandonados” donde quiera que estén. La comunidad de Casa San Alfonso fue un momento de gracia para la familia que formamos en la Casa. Mientras celebramos el día de nuestra fundación, que Dios esté con todos los colaboradores en la misión de San Alfonso y los Redentoristas.

(I have been recalling our Casa San Alfonso in Denver from 1991 to 1996. On Nov. 9, 1991, several young people helped us move into the Casa. During the day, the youth heard many stories about St. Alphonsus and about the charism of our Congregation.)

When Jesus went to the Synagogue, he took the scroll and found the passage in Isaias that spoke of his mission. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.” (Lk. 4:18)
St. Alphonsus Liguori founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer inspired by the Prophet Isaias and Jesus himself. He and his companions began on Nov. 9, 1732. There were some difficult times to follow, but they wanted to serve the “most abandoned”. There were people whom the ordinary ministry of the Church failed to reach. There were divisions within the Church that hindered the mission of the Church and scandalized the very people whom Jesus loved.
Today, Redemptorist identify those whom we serve in Constitution 3 of the Redemptorist Rule:
“The most abandoned, to whom in particular the Congregation is sent, are those for whom the Church has not yet been able to provide sufficient means of salvation, those who have never heard the Church’s message, or at least do not receive it as the “Good News”, and finally those who suffer harm because of division in the Church.” (C.Ss.R. Const. 3)
Our methods of ministry, and the places where we serve may change, but our Congregation seeks to serve the “most abandoned” wherever they may be. The community of Casa San Alfonso was a graced moment in time for the family we formed at the Casa. As we celebrate the day of our founding, may God be with all collaborators in the mission of St. Alphonsus and the Redemptorists.

O Jesus, you call us, “Come after me.” Bless, O Lord, all who welcome your call. The path may not be easy, but we have confidence that all things are possible if we walk with you. May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
