“Se Curioso, no Crítico”
En el programa Ted Lasso, la cita anterior se atribuyó a Walt Whitman. Evidentemente se le atribuyó erróneamente a Whitman. Sin embargo, provoca reflexión. Me llamó la atención ayer mientras hacía una caminata. Intento ver lo bueno en todas las personas con las que paso y les ofrezco un saludo alegre, pero cuando pasé a un hombre, “se dirigió a mí con una obscenidad”. Dijo que no respondí a algo que dijo. Le dije: “Lo siento, pero no oí lo que dijiste”. Gritó una obscenidad y yo continué.
“No juzguen”. Esta admonición de Jesús es una de las más difíciles de observar. ¿Con qué frecuencia la gente hace juicios sobre otras personas sin conocer a la persona a quien juzga? Al reflexionar sobre las palabras “se curioso, no crítico”, considero las palabras de Jesús. Recientemente tuve que admitir que tengo pérdida de audición y que necesitaba que me examinaran. Mi audición se había deteriorado más de lo que esperaba. En el examen, me dijeron que tenía una pérdida auditiva de alrededor del 40%, peor en rangos más altos. Mi breve experiencia con los audífonos ha sido una experiencia de aprendizaje. Con los audífonos, extraño algunas cosas.
Pensé en cuántas veces todos juzgamos a las personas. Podemos observar acciones que pueden ofendernos, pero no conocemos las motivaciones detrás de las acciones. Hacemos muchos juicios en nuestras vidas, pero necesitamos humildemente examinar nuestros juicios. Antes de emitir juicios, seamos lo suficientemente curiosos como para no ofender a los demás.

In the show, Ted Lasso, the above quote was attributed to Walt Whitman. Evidently it was misattributed to Whitman. Yet, it provokes reflection. It came to my attention yesterday as I was out for a walk. I try to see the good in everyone I pass, and offer a cheerful greeting, but as I passed one man, “He addressed me with an obscenity.” He said that I did not respond to something he said. I said, “I’m sorry, I just did not hear what you said.” He yelled an obscenity, and I continued on.
“Do not judge”. This admonition of Jesus is one of the most difficult to observe. How often do people make judgements about people without finding out about the person whom we judge? As I reflect on the words, “be curious, not judgmental”, I consider the words of Jesus. I have recently had to concede that I have hearing loss and needed to get examined. My hearing had deteriorated more than I expected. In the examination, I was told that I had hearing about a 40% loss of hearing, worse at higher ranges. My brief experience with hearing aids has been a learning experience. Even with the aids, I miss some things.
I thought about how many times we all make judgments about people. We may observe actions that may offend us, but we do not know the motivations behind the actions. We make many judgments in our lives, but we need humility to examine our judgments. Before making judgments, let us be curious enough to avoid offending others.

May this journey, open our eyes to the wonders of your love for us. We pray for all your people, for all believers and unbelievers, for leaders and followers. We pray for healing, for forgiveness, for compassion, for justice, for peace. We pray that as we follow you, we too can be fishers of men. Bless us on our journey.
